From July 7th through July 14th, twenty-eight aspiring performers will gather in the village of Oyster Bay to take part in the second season of Oyster Bay Music Festival, an eight-day intensive musical immersion and concurrent free live classical music festival. Ranging in age from 10 to 22 and hailing from communities throughout Long Island and greater New York, these highlevel classically-trained musicians will spend their days coaching with expert faculty, rehearsing solo and chamber music, taking seminars on audition preparation, performance psychology, body awareness, and performance presentation. Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny

how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of

our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

Yoga, dance instruction, and aquatics are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy this summer as a participant in the Town of Oyster Bay Senior Summer Program, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph Muscarella announced. This year’s program will begin on Monday, July 8th and continue through Friday, August 16th. “The Town’s Senior Summer Program has proven to be one of our most popular programs, and I’m pleased to announce that the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Division of Senior Citizen services, has put together another outstanding year of activities for residents of the Town,” said Councilman Muscarella. “This program offers our residents many great summer activities, spread out at various Town facilities. I invite our senior residents to participate in these summer activities. The program is the perfect way to be active, enjoy the company of others, learn something new and most importantly, have a good time.” On Mondays, the North

Massapequa Community Centers will offer yoga, ballroom dancing and two sessions of bridge, with one of these specifically designed for beginners. On Tuesdays, Bethpage Community Park will offer an aquatics class, and the Marjorie R. Post Community Center will offer tai chi classes, line dancing, an exercise class, and an aquatics classes. A special Wednesday program will be held at the Glen Head Community Center and will feature the music of John Walters, tai chi, bingo, a swim at Tappen Beach or a visit to a local farm stand. Additionally, each of these Wednesday programs will finish with special entertainment. Councilman Muscarella added that bus transportation is available to the Glen Head Community Center and that interested seniors must register for it with the Senior Citizens Services Division at 516.797.7940. Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park will hold an aquatics class on Thursday mornings, while Syosset-Woodbury

Community Park will offer ‘cards and conversation,’ yoga, line dancing, an advanced exercise class using hand weights and an aquatics class. On Fridays, at the North Massapequa Community Center, there will be beginner’s bridge, tai chi, line dancing and an additional session of bridge. Also on Fridays, an aquatics class will be held at Marjorie R. Post Community Park and ballroom dancing and tai chi will be held at the Hicksville Community Center. “There is something for everyone at the Town’s Senior Summer Program,” Councilman Muscarella concluded. “I encourage the Town’s senior residents to get in on the fun and participate in this program.” For more information on the Senior Summer Program or other seniors programs, residents should call the Division of Senior Citizens Services at 516.797.7940.
