More than 800 people, including some 300 cancer survivors, came together to celebrate survivorship and life with their families and Stony Brook University Cancer Center caregivers at Stony Brook’s annual National Cancer Survivors Day. The beautiful, bright June day brought many sunny smiles to those in attendance, as well as stories of hope from survivors ranging from the very young to those in their golden years. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. National Cancer Survivors Day is a global day of celebration that takes place each June. Despite progress made treating many forms of cancer, collectively the disease remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S. “Cancer care at Stony Brook is advancing rapidly, and we are determined to remain on the cutting-edge of treatment to cure many forms of cancer as we look to the future,” said Samuel Ryu, MD, Deputy Director, Clinical Affairs, and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “Our Center is assembling ever-increasing teams of physicians and scientists to tackle the difficult issues of conquering cancer – teams that work together at the basic science level, translational research, and by launching new clinical trials.” During the event introduction, Dr. Ryu said that the growth of clinical care and research at the Cancer Center is best illustrated by the coming Medical and Research Translation (MART)

Five musical ensembles from the Massapequa School District were awarded high ratings for musical proficiency at the 2015 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Major Organization Festival. Out of a rating system that included the following categories: Certificate of Participation, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold with Distinction, Massapequa took home three Silver ratings, one Gold and one Gold with Distinction after the ensembles were evaluated by a panel of two judges that provided constructive comments and assessments based on specific performance criteria. The highest honor, Gold with Distinction, was awarded to the Massapequa High School Wind Ensemble, which performed the highest level of music, level 6,

Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list.

Pride filled Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports Complex, June 22nd, as 616 Massapequa High School seniors, dressed in blue caps and gowns, transitioned to graduates before a packed house of family, friends and staff. A performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” by senior members of Cantate and College American Sign Language (ASL) students opened the ceremony, followed by speeches from Class of 2015 President Matt Spinelli, General Organization President Danielle Biano, Valedictorian Vincent Coghill and Salutatorian Bridget Keegan. The Board of Education presented an Honor Award from each academic department to deserving students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, and special recognition

and a standing ovation were given to 10 members of the Class of 2015 who have enlisted in the armed forces to serve the country. Students swiftly crossed the stage, shaking hands with members of the Board of Education and Central Administration who congratulated them as they received their diplomas. When the last diploma was handed out, the new graduates tossed their mortarboards in the air, elated by achieving the milestone. Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis, said, “We couldn’t be more proud of the Class of 2015 and all they have accomplished with the guidance of our fine educators, our supportive parents and our great community. We wish them the best of luck and a lifetime of happiness and success in their future endeavors.” Members of the Class

of 2015 were awarded a total of $31.5 million in scholarships and will attend Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Cornell, as well as nearly 150 other colleges and universities across 26 states and Washington D.C. Eight students will venture to locations more than 1,800 miles from Massapequa, including Arizona State University, California Institute of Technology, San Diego State University (CA), United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School (CO), University of Colorado at Boulder, Tarleton State University (TX), United States Merchant Marine Academy Preparatory School (NM). Ten students will serve our country in all five branches of the United States Armed Forces: Air force, Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard.

Scholars at the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) regularly augment their studies with fieldtrips and lessons that help them apply what they are learning in real, hands-on ways. One such experience was their recent trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. P-TECH scholars were given an exclusive museum tour by the Cradle’s Competitions Coordinator Kerri MacKay. The teens were encouraged to interact with the exhibits in a compelling lesson on the history of aerodynamics and rocketry. They also enjoyed a private viewing of the museum’s planetarium show in the immersive JetBlue Sky Theater. Afterward, the scholars applied their problem solving skills in a practical workshop, conducted by museum Academic Coordinator Rick Angler. In a special activity designed to increase scholars’ science and engineering knowledge, the teens were required to work collaboratively to apply mechanical engineering concepts. The scholars experienced the direct effects of the mechanics of energy how it’s generated, stored and moved - by applying the principles of potential and kinetic energy. “One of P-TECH’s goals is to consistently offer our scholars opportunities to challenge themselves and improve their knowledge,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “Dynamic lessons such as those offered by the Cradle of Aviation reinforce the skills scholars are developing in the classroom, through engaging and meaningful experiences that fundamentally support what they are learning.”

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL - Massapequa’s Strawberry Festival 2015 was a great success in spite of the rain. The Historical Society of Massapequa hosted the annual event to raise awareness in the community and remind residents of the history that Massapequa holds. The Congress, hosted the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists, is an honorsonly program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Music Under The Stars The first week of the 2015 Town of Oyster Bay “Music Under the Stars” concert series kicks off with global superstar, Bret Michaels performing at John J.
