in the opening ceremony was the Nassau County Police Explorer Color Guard. The games opened after the athletes recited the Special Olympics Creed: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” This was the seventh time Nassau County PAL participated in the Long Island Region of Special Olympics New York basketball program and the fifth time it has hosted the tournament. The teams participating in the tournament included the Special Needs Unit Knights; New Hyde Park Knights; SCO Owls; Commack Sharks; Long Island Lions; ACDS Thunderbolts; AHRC Starz; and Oakville Skywalkers, a Canadian team that also took part in the 2014 tournament and returned this year in tribute of their late Coach,

The Nassau County Police Activity League (NCPAL) Special Needs Unit recently hosted approximately 150 athletes with special needs as part of the 2015 Special Olympics New York Basketball Tournament at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The daylong tournament saw a total of 16 basketball teams participate, up from 13 in 2014. Due to the increased number of teams, games were spread out over two sessions - morning and afternoon. The tournament concluded with players receiving medals and award ribbons. The morning’s opening ceremony began with NCPAL Special Needs Unit athletes carrying banners as part of the parade of teams and Michael Korins, a vocalist diagnosed with autism at age 3, singing the Star Spangled Banner and the Canadian National Anthem. Simmer Down, Society By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisfied? We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal

comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

Beginning on June 21st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will open up the 2015 summer season for young campers with special needs and disabilities. There will be ten sessions throughout the course of the summer, each lasting for six days. Additional information and registration forms can be found online at www. camppaquatuck.com. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck provides services and opportunities for children and young adults ages 6 to 21 to learn while having fun. Campers can enjoy activities such as boating, arts and crafts, swimming, music, and sports. The supportive environment helps children to develop self-esteem and to achieve personal growth while enjoying recreational activities. The camp has been helping children flourish since its early stages in 1941, when the Rotary

Club of the Moriches arranged a beach-side picnic for children with Polio. This inspired the founding of the official camp in 1948, when Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck held its first summer session for 25 children with Polio. Today, it continues to be a safe place where specialneeds campers can enjoy themselves and broaden their horizons. Improvements have been made to the dormitories and the dining hall to provide the best experience possible for the campers. Thanks to the renovations that were made to the dining hall, campers and staff members are now able to eat together rather than in shifts. Private donations are the camp’s sole source of funding; therefore, yearround fundraising efforts are critical to the camp’s operations. Camp Pa-QuaTuck has teamed up with

Under the guidance of new Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Mead, the arts enrichment program that has served a generation of children has extended its weekly sessions for ages 5-14 from four weeks to six weeks of summer fun. BRIDGING OVER - The third grade Brownies from Birch Lane Elementary School celebrated their bridging over to Girl Scouts. In the Fall, they will be Junior Girl Assemblyman Joseph S. Scouts. During the ceremony, the girls had the privilege of walking over the bridge Saladino presented official and receiving a pin to complete their journey as a Brownie. The group of Brownies New York State Citations were lead by Crissy Mullooly and Marie Geaniotis. to Grace Episcopal Day School students Nicole Baillie, Jack Russell, Reuben Philip, and Jake Vota. Assemblyman Saladino congratulated the graduating students on their outstanding academic performances. He spoke to them about leadership and the importance of community service. Reuben Philip is Grace Episcopal Day School’s Class of 2015 Valedictorian. Jack was also recognized by the AAFT for his high test score on the National French Test. Jack played on the school’s soccer and basketball teams. Jack is a member of Student Council, Math Olympiads, Kids Care, band, and chapel choir. Nicole Baillie, Salutatorian, has also chosen Kellenberg Memorial High School. She participated in Kids Care, Student Council, Math Olympiads, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Outside of school, Nicole is an accomplished dancer and gymnast. Island Lutheran High School as a freshman in September. Jake is also a scholarship winner from the CHSEE. Math Olympiads and band are on Jake’s resumé. All had key roles in the spring production of The Little Mermaid. The Rev. The evening opened with remarks from Principal Amster and SEA OF BLUE - The Massapequa community and the Massapequa Moms recently Robert gathered at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa for A Sea of Blue. The rally was to show Plainedge Superintendent support for our brave men and women who wear Blue and put their life on the line by Dr. Edward J. Salina, Jr., followed by a diverse group protecting ours every day.

F.I.S.T. Comes To Massapequa On Thursday, June 18th, St. Rose Church will be hosting a resource fair and substance abuse event. The resource fair begins at 6 p.m. and the formal program at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. Families In Support of Treatment (F.I.S.T.) events have taken place throughout Long Island in an effort to provide information, resources, and support for those affected by alcohol and other substances and the community at large. This event is free of charge and open to all people in the surrounding communities. The resource fair will include numerous prevention, support, and intervention “helps” for all community members. The program will include speakers who will provide an overview of the epidemic, current trends, effects on family members, prevention and risk factors, treatment options, success stories, hope and advocacy. Massapequa has been profoundly affected by the consequences of alcohol and other drug use. In recent years, addiction

to alcohol, prescription and illicit drugs has skyrocketed. Addiction causes devastation to individuals, families and communities; it does not discriminate. Help is available, and this event promises to be a vehicle to unite concerned individuals, families and communities to address this issue and provide support for individuals in need. The information and resources that F.I.S.T. has to offer are abundant and invaluable. According to Anthony Rizzuto, Executive Director of F.I.S.T., “Addiction has and continues to have devastating effects on individuals, families, and our communities. It is imperative to empower ourselves through education, resources, and work to connect those in need with the help available.” Jamie Bogenshutz, Executive Director of YES Community Counseling Center, added, “It is so important that our community comes together to address this growing problem. As the

community’s licensed drug treatment provider, we are painfully aware that no one is immune from the consequences of addiction, but working together, we know we can make a real difference in people’s lives.” Danielle LaRose, Director of Outreach at St. Rose of Lima, also stated, “This evening program has been part of our active prayer. Honorable Paul Meli had to advise presiding Junior Girl Scout Judge Eden Price to bang the gavel several times to restore order to her court. When the defendant’s attorney (Gianna Serafino) was later questioned by reporter moms, she reflected, “It would have helped our case, if Goldilocks had at least cleaned her bowl or picked up the broken chair.” The court was busy that day with a second trial scheduled. The criminal trial of Mary Peabody versus Jenny Jones, both pretend 5th Grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa, immediately followed. The case of the missing lunchbox began with the plaintiff’s weak testimony (given by Arianna Lima). To boost the case, her attorney (Mary Rose Rubino) called two additional witnesses (Katie Weglarz and Caroline O’Rourke); but the courthouse was left asking more questions than receiving answers. Despite heavily circumstantial evidence, however, the defendant’s attorney (Audrey Pioreck) could not persuade a non-guilty verdict from the Jurors. “I knew she’d be found guilty,” Ms. Pioreck later told reporters. “It was hard to get the jurors to see beyond the fact that my client had peanut butter all over her mouth after lunch that day.” As the defendant (Kristen Bilich) was being placed in the courthouse jail to await sentencing, she

could be heard shouting, “I’m innocent! I need an appeal! ...And I definitely need a better attorney!” Cadette Girl Scout Judge Alexandra Lachnicht sentenced the defendant to five months of community service. In two mock trials, Scouts dressed and participated as judges, lawyers, plaintiffs, defendants, witnesses and jurors. As a bonus, Nassau County District Court Judges Paul Meli and Colin O’Donnell, along with NY State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Driscoll, were on hand to answer questions and provide support. “I won my first case!” announced the Plaintiff’s attorney, Erica Tanner.
