The Town of Oyster Bay will reopen the cordoned off areas of Bethpage Community Park, including the tennis courts, playground, and pool area (the pool will reopen as originally scheduled). The Town received confirmation from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) that they have completed a thorough evaluation of data from previous site investigations and removal actions in and adjacent to the park, and see no reason that any publicly accessible areas remain closed. “While areas of the park were closed as a safety precaution, we have received notification from the DEC that, together with the NYS Department of Health, they have not identified any remaining contaminant levels

The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.
While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.
Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

At that time, the Town removed a large area of buried drum remnants and debris. “While the closure of portions of the park were solely done as a safety precaution, we are comfortable, following discussions with DEC representatives and environmental experts, that these areas of the park can be reopened,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We are pleased to restore access to all the wonderful amenities Bethpage Community Park offers our residents.”

The Massapequa Lacrosse Club (MLC) and the Town of Oyster Bay are pleased to invite youth lacrosse teams from across the region to once again join the battle in the 11th annual Supervisor’s Cup. The tournament has raised nearly $420,000 since its inception in 2005 with the proceeds benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This year the Supervisor’s Cup will draw over 1000 participants including teams from all over Long Island, corporate sponsors, event volunteers, and food vendors. Game venues will be scattered across the south shore town of Massapequa including Birch Lane Elementary School, RJ Lockhart Elementary School, Massapequa High School, AG Berner Middle
School, and headquartered at John J. Burns Park. Here, visitors can purchase tournament shirts and may also take a chance at the Chinese auction. Dozens of gift baskets donated by local merchants and colleges and universities are on display to be raffled off at the close of the tournament Sunday evening. The Supervisor’s Cup showcases boys teams in both Town and Travel brackets in grades 3-12. Our girls will compete in the KeiraStrong Girls Lacrosse Tournament on June 25th & 26th here in Massapequa. Earning Recognition Thirty-two Massapequa High School and Ames Campus students were awarded for outstanding performance on the National German Examination (NGE) administered by the American Association of Teachers of German, with nine out of 42 Long Island students to be recognized as placing among the top in the area. Their high achievement puts them on the NGE Presidential Honor Roll, a distinction shared by only two other public high schools on Long Island. Juniors Christopher Hadsall and Alexandra Kanapes won Gold Awards for proficiency on the level 4 exam, the highest exam. Christopher was honored for placing fourth on the exam. Alexandra was recognized by being nominated for the PAD-AATG StudyAbroad Trip to Germany for her achievement. Senior Meghan Goodwin earned a Silver Award and juniors Bailey Rosmarin,
Elizabeth Stippell and Joseph Whalen all received Bronze Awards for their achievement on the level 4 exam. Several Gold Award winners who took the level 3 exam were also awarded for placing exceptionally high on the test. Senior Thomas Beck placed third and sophomores Christian DeNave placed fifth. Gabriella DiPaola came in first place and Paul Lestingi captured third place. Sophomore Evan Warns was given the Langenscheidt Award for his efforts. Silver Award winners on the level 3 exam consisted of sophomores Thomas Bradbury, Christopher Braglia, Evan Donohue, John Gonzalez, Samantha McGrath and Kaitlyn Migliore. Bronze Award winners were sophomores Ryan Abrigo, Alexis Bardio, James McGarrity and Gillian Murphy. Both Evan and Samantha came in seventh place on the level 3 exam. All students who placed
in the top levels were recently honored at a special awards dinner at Chaminade High School. Freshman at Massapequa High SchoolAmes Campus took the level 2 exam. Gold Award winners were Ryan Cassano and Anthony Soviero. Silver Award recipients included Domenick Anderson, Andrew O’Brien, Dylan Teima and Kerry Walker. Bronze Awards were given to Mohnish Aggarwal, Jacqueline Cipriano, Eric Curran, Ryan Ginsberg and Luke Scher. These award winners were among nearly 22,000 students who took the 100-question exam nationwide. “We are so pleased to see our students demonstrate proficiency on these exams and congratulate their teachers for their steadfast guidance and preparation,” said William Anderson, curriculum associate for World Languages.

Valedictorian
Joseph Prusan may have grown up around attorneys but the law bug hasn’t bitten him. As valedictorian of the 593-member class at Massapequa High School, he’s setting his sights on the medical field and looks forward to one day becoming a neuroradiologist practicing somewhere out west. With a grade point average of 99.872, he’s heading to the University of California in Los Angeles in the fall to study bioengineering, a school he chose in part because of the sunny location and because he hopes to gain experience at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center located on the campus. Joseph found inspiration in his career path through his experience as a diabetic. “I have always gotten really good care and was intrigued by my doctors and by articles on the condition and finding a cure,” he said. Much of his high school career focused on science research and working on environmental issues, but he also struck a healthy balance between academics
and his social life by making time for friends. Through Massapequa High School’s Science Research Program, of which Joseph was a part of since eighth grade as an advanced science student, he conducted research to see if nylon could prevent rust on metal beads and he is currently working with centipedes to see if proteins in their venom can be used as a natural pesticide. As a senior, he will be presenting his project at the district’s 5th Annual Science Symposium, May 26th. As a sophomore and junior, Joseph was recognized by the Dowling College Long Island Youth Summit Essay Contest. He was a finalist for his essay on “Small Scale Hydropower,” and as a winner in his category for his essay on “Proton Exchange Membranes,” which also garnered him a $2,500 scholarship to Dowling College. He credits science teacher Dr. Paul Hesleitner for always being “open and honest with him when he asked for advice about his research and his helping to expose him to science and technology so that he thought about the subjects in ways that he never had before.” He also enjoyed working on science research in a lab outside of Massapequa High School. Also a source of inspiration was his AP
English teacher Mr. Robert Hempel, who made the class read the book “Hot, Flat and Crowded” by Tom Friedman, a book about the damages to the environment. Joseph and a group of students started the environmental awareness initiative, Aerify 3.6, which promotes environmentalism through activities such as tree plantings and park cleanups. Joseph is proud that the club has plans to expand into the Ames Campus. He was also involved in Science Olympiads, has been named an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar of Distinction for his high achievement on AP exams and is a member of National Honor Society. Joseph says his greatest strength is his work ethic and his greatest weakness his tendency to procrastinate. When he is not in school, he enjoys playing football with friends, traveling with family and volunteering in the pediatric radiology wing at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is the oldest of four boys who all have similar interests, he says. His advice for future graduates? “High school is very doable if you work hard and study,” he said. “However, don’t get too involved with school that you neglect spending time with your friends.”

Pool Registration Underway Registration for the 2016 season at Town of Oyster Bay pools is underway. All Town pools will open for the season on Saturday, June 25th, through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th. The Town of Oyster Bay has four Community Park pools open to Town residents, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, as well as Harry Tappen Pool in Glenwood Landing. Registration will take place daily at all pools. At the Community Park Pools, registration will take place from Noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays, and from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Tappen Pool, registration will take place from noon until 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays and from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning on June 25th, registration will be held during hours of operation at Tappen Pool and at the four Community Park Pools. Town residents interested in registering for a season pass must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Along with the Town’s pools, there are several other fun activities available for our Town residents to enjoy this summer. Residents should
be on the lookout for our summer guide, which will be arriving in your mailbox soon, detailing all the great programs made available by the Town this summer. Swimming lessons will be available to pool members at the Community Park pools, at an additional cost, for members ages five and older. Once a resident joins the pool, they may obtain the paperwork to sign their child up and mail in the registration materials. The Town of Oyster Bay also
has a swim team that is available to pool members 6 to 16 years of age in which they can compete against other Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference teams. The program is for residents only and the Program Cost is $50 per swimmer ($25 for each additional swimmer in the same family).
