I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

Hoops Contest Massapequa High School hosted its Hoops for Hope fundraiser on May 5th, raising approximately $2,900 in memory of a former Massapequa student. The money will go toward the Jacob Brice Memorial Scholarship fund, which presents financial awards to graduating seniors each year. The three-on-three basketball tournament was held in honor of the young man who died in 2013, before his senior year, from
complications from a heart condition and brain cancer. The event, open to students and staff, was organized by Chief’s Challenge, a club with a mission to “encourage kindness, respect and civility.” “Jake was a positive influence on all who knew him,” said high school social worker Joanne Waters, adviser of Chief’s Challenge. “He always had a smile and a friendly way about him that made others feel comfortable when meeting him. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson reminds residents that the early sale of seasonal beach stickers begins on Saturday, May 13th. Beginning that day, Town residents may choose to get their beach stickers
and be able to spend more time in the sand.” The Councilwoman noted that beach stickers will be on sale daily, beginning on May 13th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Please note that stickers are NOT available at Town Hall. In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration and must be in the vehicle they will use to drive to the beach since stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach stickers for Town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits. “Stickers are accepted at all Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents with beach stickers will have the opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay all summer long,” Councilwoman Johnson said. Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will open for weekends only beginning Saturday, May
