ENHANCING A LIFE - Share The Voice, a non-profit organization established to enhance the lives of disabled children, is pleased to announce that it delivered its sixth adaptive tricycle to a disabled child on Long Island on Saturday, March 22nd.The Rifton adaptive tricycle, valued at over $1,400, was presented to 6-year-old Naomi Hernandez, who is diagnosed with Pompe Disease, a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness. Naomi currently uses a wheel chair and can immensely benefit from an adaptive tricycle to strengthen her legs and trunk control.

A rainy morning did not deter more than 200 volunteers from going to Brady Park and tidying it up. One Of Those Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to
progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.
Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

Leadership Awards Four Massapequa High School students were honored for their achievements in academics, athletics, community service or school leadership with a 2014 Youth Leadership Award from Senator Kemp Hannon. Junior Nicholas Petrini, who won for high academic achievement, takes a rigorous courseload and is a member of National Honor Society, Mathletes, and plays the trumpet in the high school band. Sophomore Andrew Ditzel, who was recognized for
athleticism, plays junior varsity baseball and soccer, is part of a traveling baseball team and plays intramural basketball. Junior Teresa Blando was awarded for community service. Teresa helps teach religion at Maria Regina Church and participates in numerous community service projects, from working with children, to raising funds for victims of tragedies in her community, to raising awareness about social issues through her Girl Scout Troop. She is currently working on her
Gold Award project, Girl Scout’s highest honor. Junior Courtney Taylor was honored for leadership among her peers. She is President of the Drama Club and has had an acting role in each fall and spring high school theatre production during her high school career. EXPLORING HINDUISM - As part of the social studies curriculum, Unqua Elementary School sixth-grade students learned about India and explored the major beliefs of Hinduism by performing an ancient Indian epic known as the Ramayana. High School Heroes
They call them High School Heroes — students in grades 10-12 who train to teach second-grade classes for a day in the Massapequa School District. The opportunity, offered through the School-toCareer Office at Massapequa High School, is designed for students who are thinking of pursuing a career in education and looking for real-world experience to help them decide if the profession is for them. Now in its 6th year, the program has soared in popularity since its inception, climbing to 62 participants this year, according to School-toCareer Coordinator Denise DeLury. Students use lessons from Junior Achievement, a non-profit organization that provides handson curriculum, and are trained after school by DeLury. “We use a unit titled ‘My Community’ and it consists of five fun, hands-on lessons to teach the students about workers, the work they perform, why workers are paid, what taxes are and how they are used, and how and where to save money,” DeLury said. “The second-grade teachers love it because it aligns very nicely with the curriculum.” “My second graders absolutely love this experience!” said Donna Crowley, second-grade teacher at Fairfield Elementary School. “They benefit greatly from the wellorganized social studies lessons based on communities
and cooperative learning.” Teaching in pairs, “many “heroes” choose to teach in the elementary school they attended and some even teach in the teacher’s class that they had,” DeLury said. “It gives them a chance to see how much planning is involved
with teaching, how to manage a class, differentiate their lesson and work with students with disabilities. They are exhausted by the end of the day, but they always say how rewarding and fun the experience was.” Among the many skills the students gain by participating in the program are time management,
organization, problem-solving and communication, according to DeLury. “It also really gives them insight into the profession. After the experience many heroes know they definitely want to be teachers, or work with children. Some think maybe not elementary, but secondary; even a few have said ‘I can’t do that every day.’ Either way, it is a great experience to help them consider their future career options,” DeLury said. High School sophomore Gabrielle Hartman said that working with the students was a “fulfilling experience that taught her a lot about the average day of a teacher and what it takes to prepare a lesson.” High School senior Danielle Kertzak, who participated in the program since tenth grade, said she gained more experience learning how to work with little kids and more confidence to speak in front of others. “Next year I’m going to college to major in psychology and the High School Heroes program helped me make this decision,” she said. Angela’s House will hold its Annual Golf Outing at Indian Hills Golf Club in Northport on June 9th to support its mission of helping care for medically frail children and their families. The event, now
in its 12th year, helps cover the cost of medical supplies, equipment and services for children with special health needs. The outing is one of a series of events held annually to support the
agency, which was founded 20 years ago by Bob and Angie Policastro, whose daughter Angela suffered severe brain damage during birth. The outing features putting tee and driving
