ore than $2,000 was raised for cancer research as 16 teams competed in the Hoops for H.O.P.E. basketball tournament at Massapequa High School. The event was coordinated through the collaborative efforts of The Chief’s Challenge Club whose mission is to spread Random Acts of Kindness to others and The C.A.R.E.
Club, which spreads knowledge and awareness about cancer to students and the community. All proceeds went to the Jake Brice Memorial Fund and to Brain Cancer Research in memory of Jake Brice, a member of the class of 2014 who succumbed to the disease this past August. Special thanks go to girls varsity basketball
coach Shari Roessler for helping the clubs organize the event, local businesses that donated gift cards for the raffle baskets and YES Community Counseling Center for making all of the raffle baskets. A student who goes the extra mile in their endeavors outside of the classroom deserves recognition so that it may inspire other youngsters to emulate this behavior. “Each year, we recognize a diverse group of students who really demonstrate caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s group of winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor and we know these academic scholarships will help these students fund their college education. In these tough economic times every dollar helps.” This year the number of honorees has been
increased to ten students in honor of the program’s 10th anniversary. Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grades and those in grades nine through 12. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We feel it is important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” Anyone who wishes to nominate a student, or should a student want to self-nominate they should fill out a nomination form and submit it to Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way,

Fifty-two students from Massapequa High School-Main and Ames campuses are now skilled in identifying and responding to alcoholrelated emergencies. They recently completed the Red Watch Band training program, an initiative spearheaded by students and administrators from Stony Brook University to curb alcohol-related accidents among high
school and college students. Participants must complete two hours of alcohol emergency training and three hours of CPR training, and attend follow-up meetings to discuss their experiences, reinforce skills and recruit new student members when training sessions become available. Massapequa’s program is coordinated
by high school social workers Kimberly Hession of the Ames Campus, and Joanne Waters of the Main Campus, as well as school nurse and certified CPR instructor Kathy Perednia of the Ames Campus. To acknowledge their new skill, students were presented with certificates and red watch bands to remind them that every second counts in an alcohol-related emergency.

Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted
nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”
It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

They’re Massapequa High School alumni who told their stories of success and how they got there to more than 600 freshmen during the 7th Annual Alumni Career Day at Massapequa High School-Ames Campus. “This is a way of giving back to our community and reconnecting with classmates,” said alumnus David Riederman, director of Global Sales for Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, who has been the key source of attracting alumni to the event, mainly through the use of social media. “The students are really receptive and their questions run the gamut,” he said.
