Nearly 400 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). On April 29th30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Chris Guglielmo, Anthony Bellone and Lyla Cartafalsa worked together on “Saturation for Spring.” They analyzed the temperatures of different colored fabrics after being left out in the sun to determine what colors are best to wear in different weather conditions. Students said they liked talking with others about their conclusions at the fair and also seeing the other experiments done by their peers throughout the district. McKenna Elementary School sixth-grader Anthony Calato compared the size of bubbles he could blow with different pieces of gum. He had help from his sister for data collection, who used

a soft ruler to measure his bubbles. Kira Van Why, a second-grader at Fairfield Elementary School, built her own light bulb. She said she learned that a lot of supplies are needed to complete a science experiment and that it is important to do research first. Third-grader Elena Walsh made three homemade stethoscopes and tested them on her dog to see which allowed her to best hear a heartbeat. The event also featured a guest speaker, Laurel Kaye, a Long Island native and astronaut candidate who is part of the Mars One effort to establish a human settlement on Mars.

Awareness of Autism April is Autism Awareness Month and Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is doing its part to support the cause. Students were given blank puzzle pieces, which they brought home, decorated with their families and returned to school along with $1.

Money will be donated to the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America to support local families. The puzzle pieces, which represent the mystery and complexity of autism spectrum disorder, have been hung throughout the hallways. Second-grade teacher Jennifer Lidonnici,

whose family will match the donations raised by Fairfield students and staff, added that facts about autism have been shared during the morning announcements throughout the month. Members of the Student Council and Art Club made additional puzzle pieces to raise awareness.

More than 400 students from the Massapequa School District presented their scientific discoveries at Berner Middle School on April 1st. The Science Discovery Fair was open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Students worked individually or in teams to explore their own interests and created poster board displays with their findings. Participants followed the scientific method by selecting a topic, creating a hypothesis, conducting an experiment and drawing conclusions. On March 27th, the Pequott District held its annual District Pinewood Derby and Cub Carnival. The only difference this year was that the event’s leader had passed away a few months before the event. So, this year, some district volunteers came together and ran the event in honor of Mike Assande. Mike had run this derby and carnival for 16 years. When he started the derby was separate from the carnival. A few years into doing the derby, he decided to bring them together into one day. The derby is a race of all of the winners from each pack in the district. The Cubs handmade cars are raced down a track. As far as the carnival, Mike

would arrange for Packs to either bring a game or at least run one. In addition, he acquired all of the prizes for the carnival. The children get to play the games and win really fantastic prizes. Yearly, former Pack 191 Cubmaster and Troop 656 Scout Master, Mike Moriarity, donates a bicycle to be the grand door prize. It’s no small task to put this all together. It took an army of volunteers to run what Mike Assande did yearly for these kids. So, in honor of Mike, the kids had a blast racing their cars and playing the carnival games. Making a Difference

Bowlers, sponsors and spectators recently came together at Farmingdale Lanes in Farmingdale to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs, raising more than $22,000 to benefit Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD). ACLD Foundation’s second annual Bowling For An Enviable Life FUNdraiser brought people supporting ACLD together, with members of the ACLD family joining ACLD partners and the community for some bowling fun while helping ACLD pursue its mission to provide children and adults

with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities for pursuing enviable lives, increasing their independence and fostering supportive relationships within the community. “For the second consecutive year, the people ACLD supports and those who help us pursue our mission enjoyed an incredibly special and rewarding afternoon,” said ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith “We are grateful to all the bowlers and sponsors who made this event a success.” “Bowling For An Enviable Life is a wonderful, fun-filled

day that everyone who believes in and supports the ACLD mission can come out and enjoy, along with their families,” said Mark Small, CFO/COO of Allegiant Health and ACLD Foundation Board Member. “I was very proud to be involved in this event and to contribute to its success.” More than 350 bowlers participated and several dozen spectators came to show their support for the bowlers as well as ACLD.
