More than 400 students from the Massapequa School District presented their scientific discoveries at Berner Middle School on April 1st. The Science Discovery Fair was open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Students worked individually or in teams to explore their own interests and created poster board displays with their findings. Participants followed the scientific method by selecting a topic, creating a hypothesis, conducting an experiment and drawing conclusions. Projects done by students in grades 5-8 were judged, and winners were recognized at an awards ceremony. Lockhart Elementary School sixth-graders Chris Guglielmo, Anthony Bellone and Lyla Cartafalsa worked together on “Saturation for Spring.”

Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

A SPRING SPIN - Kindergartners at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District celebrated the arrival of spring by creating flower-themed projects that combined art and math. Forty-seven Massapequa High School students are now skilled in responding to alcoholrelated emergencies after successfully completing the Red Watch Band training program. The initiative was spearheaded by Stony Brook University to curb alcohol-related accidents among high school and college students. Training was sponsored locally by the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition, a schoolcommunity partnership aimed at educating students and parents about the dangers of risky behaviors and promoting activities that empower students to lead safe, healthy lives. Since 2014, more than 300 students

from the high school’s main and Ames campuses have been trained. Participants were required to complete two hours of alcohol emergency training and three hours of CPR training. During the program, students played games such as Jeopardy to reinforce information about alcohol awareness. Many already knew answers from their health classes and the elementary school Too Good for Drugs program. April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and on April 4th a ceremony was held in the Ames library where participants were presented with certificates and red wristbands to remind them that every second counts in an

alcohol-related emergency. A pair of Stony Brook students spoke to students about keeping up their skills by participating in the CARE team, which does outreach at events and also helps get more people trained. Massapequa’s program was coordinated by social workers Kimberly Hession and Joanne Waters. Health teacher Michael LaBella conducted the CPR and AED certification training. “From kindergarten, we talk about decision and prevention,” Ms. Hession said, “but this program is actually intervention and it gives students the skills to step in when things go wrong and possibly save a life.”

Students and staff at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus donned blue on April 3rd in support of the 6,000 people a year who lose their lives to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, as well as the people who are living with the neurodegenerative disease. In an effort to raise awareness, speakers from ALS Ride for Life spoke to a group of ninthgraders about the disease and about the annual fundraising event that has raised $7 million during two decades. During the past two years, the course has gone through Massapequa, with students and staff standing outside

of several of the district’s schools with large banners to show support. Ames students Anthony Gazzola, Kevin McLeer and Anthony Papasodero spoke about the history of Ride for Life and its founder, Chris Pendergast, who has lived with ALS for 23 years. A video featured Mr. Pendergast’s daily challenges and footage from past rides. It also explained how ALS came to be known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease for the former New York Yankees baseball player whose career and life were cut short. Speakers included Barbara Brown, a board member of Ride for Life, and Paul Weissman,

who is living with the disease. Mr. Weissman told students that they will face challenges in their lives, and their goals should be to never give up, never lose hope and remain optimistic despite the odds against them. He also spoke of the small but meaningful acts that inspire people with ALS to keep on living and fighting, from simple words of encouragement to the Ice Bucket Challenge craze of 2014. Tania Willman, the executive assistant to the principal, said that Ames would make a donation to ALS Ride for Life when it passes through Massapequa during its 20th annual journey in May.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

On Monday, April 10th, Massapequa Lacrosse Club’s third grade teams came together to honor our military. The brother of one of the third grade coaches commands the 1st Armored Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade out of Fort Bliss, Texas. The coaches asked the third grade boys to make

posters showing their appreciation for our service men and women. At their Monday night practice, the boys held the posters and made a short video expressing their thanks. The video will be played at the brigade’s upcoming military ball, which honors soldiers and their families for selfless service and

sacrifice. At the ball, the brigade will honor one of their own who was held as a prisoner of war during the beginning phases of the Iraq invasion. These third grade boys were so happy to take part in this show of support for our military who give so much to ensure our safety and freedom!

More than 40 graduates of the Massapequa School District returned to their hometown to give advice to the next generation of professionals. Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus hosted its 10th annual Alumni Career Day on April 7th. The keynote speaker was Brian Kilmeade, a 1982 Massapequa High School graduate who co-hosts

Fox & Friends on the Fox News Channel. He told the ninth-graders to find their passions and aggressively pursue them. In classrooms, students heard from graduates now working in dozens of professions, including sales, law enforcement, medicine, marketing, engineering, photography and politics. Several Massapequa alumni

now working for the district as teachers and administrators spoke about careers in education. “We had incredible speakers,” Ames Principal Jordan McCaw said of the alumni whose time as students in the district spanned from the 1940s to the early 2000s. “The students got to see success stories in people who grew up down the block
