Crazy Clothes Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District celebrated Spirit Week from March 19th23rd. There were several themed days in which students and teachers donned fun attire like pajamas or Hawaiian shirts. On Superhero Day, students were asked to dress up as either a
Hollywood hero or an everyday hero such as a firefighter or police officer. It is also connected to Berner’s One School, One Book initiative. All sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, along with teachers and administrators, read “One for the Murphys” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Lessons and activities based
upon the book take place throughout the year and one of its themes is to be somebody else’s hero. Spirit Week was organized by the student council. Adviser Denise Robertson said the purpose was to bring the school together and create a sense of pride. Friends of Karen
Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

Don’t Forget the Tomatoes remarking, Are you gonna carry all that?? I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me. My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry. As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the floor behind me. Whoops. On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child. Mom, it’s a little red ball!

with Jamie Lynn Ryan I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot. The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu. The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance. Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overflowing. The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,

After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart. Always. Take a cart. Clued In Ancient Greece was the theme of a breakout activity for sixth-graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. During their social studies classes, students visited the library and had to decipher a series of clues
to open up five locks. The activity was designed by library media specialists Laurie Martucci-Walsh and Julie Rogers using Breakout EDU kits. It served as an introduction to the unit, which is part of the sixth-grade
social studies curriculum that focuses on ancient civilizations. For one clue, students had to identify a geographical feature to open a word lock, and another had them decoding the Greek alphabet to open
a number lock. In a battle of Athens vs. Sparta, they had to find hidden keys around the room. There were also clues relating to Greek architecture and mythology, the latter requiring students to watch a short video on
their Chromebooks. Once all five locks were open, the students were rewarded with a prize: an Easter snack. Ms. Martucci-Walsh and Ms. Rogers regularly use the Breakout EDU kits to reinforce classroom
lessons. They create the breakout activities based upon the essential questions and main ideas for the particular unit of study.

Vetdogs (VetDog.org) has trained and placed guide and service dogs to provide independence, enhanced mobility and companionship to veterans with disabilities from all eras. In 2015, VetDogs opened its programs to first responders, including fire, police, and emergency medical personnel. America’s VetDogs is a 501©(3) notfor-profit organization founded by the Guide Dog Foundation. VetDogs relies on contributions from generous individuals, corporations, service clubs and foundations to fund its mission to help those who have served our country live with dignity and independence. It costs over $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but America’s VetDogs provides its services completely free of charge to the individual. America’s VetDogs has been accredited by both the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International.
Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet aren’t the only artists that students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District look up to. They also want to emulate their older peers at Massapequa High School. Birch Lane fourthgraders recently participated in a collaborative art project with students in the high school’s digital art class.
The high school artists shared some of their favorite pieces they created in class this year by making Flipgrid videos. Fourthgraders accessed the videos on their Chromebooks and made their own video replies commenting on the artwork. Additionally, the Birch Lane students made their own digital art using Pixlr, which they shared with their older peers.
The goal of the project was to encourage active digital citizenship and foster communication through artwork critique. Technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn facilitated the project along with high school art teacher Julie Thornton, Birch Lane art teacher Melinda Gibbons and fourth-grade teacher Lisa Burke.

The Sergeant Peter F. Colleran, Jr. Post 7763 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, located in Massapequa Park, sponsored a future service dog in January at the America’s Vet Dogs facility in Smithtown and had the opportunity recently to select from a litter of three male black labs, the Post 7763 sponsored puppy that will be trained as a service dog to assist a Veteran in need. After careful consideration, petting and face licking, the puppy was chosen and the choice for the puppy’s name was “Magee.” The puppy was selected by and named after veteran Richard Magee, who served in the Army in Korea and is a Past Post Commander and the current Poppy Chairman for Post 7763.
As the Poppy Chairman, Mr. Magee has been instrumental for the past 12 years in coordinating the annual Poppy Campaign held by Post 7763 each year in May. It was because of his continued guidance and determination to have a successful campaign in 2017 that Post 7763 was able to sponsor his service dog. The money for the sponsorship of this service dog was raised through the generosity of the residents, businesses and individuals of Massapequa Park who donated this past May during the VFW Post 7763 annual Poppy Campaign. And so, through the generosity of many, the journey has begun for “Magee,” who will one day help a Veteran live without boundaries. According to Richard Magee, “All money raised during the annual Poppy Campaign is used to assist veterans in need. A successful campaign this coming May will help Post 7763 continue to help assist Veterans in need.” The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7763 is looking for new members to help continue the mission of assisting Veterans in need.
