555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the
lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting
events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. And counting. Stay tuned for that book. And Buddy’s, of course.

The artistic talent of 29 students from Massapequa School District was on display at the Art Supervisors Association’s (ASA) 12th Annual Nassau All-County Art Exhibition, Sunday, March 20th. The free event took place at Farmingdale State College and honored more than 1200 students from kindergarten through grade 12 who have demonstrated excellence in a wide variety of twodimensional visual art
forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics and photography. The ASA, in its efforts to nurture young artists, also presented Massapequa High School senior Olivia Abele and nearly 50 other graduating seniors a scholarship during a special Scholarship Awards Ceremony preceding the exhibit. Massapequa High School students held the “Catch A Wave” event to raise money for the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop University Hospital. The students decorated hallways, calling them “The Boardwalk,” where baked goods, t-shirts, hats and other items were sold to raise money while music played and a fun time was had. The event raised more than $6,000 last year.

A new feature to Haiku this year is the parent login. This helps if parents have more than one student in school. They can view all their students in one portal this way, rather than logging into each student’s individual account. Parents can set up a login by clicking on the “parents” tab on the district website for more information. Using Google Apps for Education, which are also web-based and can be accessed anytime, anywhere from any mobile device, parents learned how to create a document using Google Docs and were informed about why it is such an important tool in education today. With Google Docs, students can collaborate on assignments and projects in school or at home because the work is automatically saved in the cloud. Students share work with teachers who can give immediate feedback and individualized attention, which puts students on a better path to success. “A lot of the work begins in the classroom and continues at home,” Esposito said. “The ability to collaborate in this way is very powerful. We don’t know what the career of the future will be, but we know they will be using collaboration as a 21st century skill.” Parents agreed that they felt more comfortable with the technology and would find other workshops on topics such as Mobile Apps, helpful in the future. Subsequent workshops on the Parent Portal and the online Gradebook were held at the end of March. More workshops are being planned as needed.

Berner Middle School parents headed back to the classroom for Parent Tech University to learn how to navigate the digital tools teachers and students use to enhance academic instruction. The class centered on the district’s learning management system called Haiku and Google Apps for Education. It was the first of a series that aims to boost parents’ comfort levels so they can be actively involved in their children’s education. “For students to get the most out of their education, it is important for them to be powerful users of the digital tools that are available to them and that our parents are involved and have a good understanding of how to navigate these tools as well so we can all work together toward success,” said Berner Middle School Principal Jason Esposito upon welcoming parents to the class. Technology Learning Coach Danielle Mammolito conducted a day and evening session where dozens of parents first learned about the different ways they can get information from the district, including visiting the website, signing up for Enews, which can be done on the website, using mobile Apps such as “Remind” @ bernerinfo and through Twitter @BernerChiefs and @MassapequaPS or clicking on the Twitter feed on the Berner webpage. Then, using a Smartboard, she instructed them on Haiku, and Google Apps for Education. Haiku, a web-based program that students can access anytime, anywhere with a mobile device, basically provides a digital platform for teachers to organize their class and the resources they need to teach it. Imagine Awards Winners The COPE Foundation, Inc. (“COPE”), a nonprofit grief and healing organization dedicated to helping parents and families living with the loss of a child, was named a Finalist in the Leadership Excellence Award category in The 4th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. Last year’s event attracted over 400 attendees from the nonprofit and business communities and an even larger crowd is expected this year. Winners will be announced LIVE at the awards gala at the Crest
Hollow Country Club on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016. Nominated organizations, their constituents and the Long Island business community are expected to attend. More than 135 entries were submitted for consideration in five categories, including Innovation, Leadership Excellence, Social Entrepreneurism, Rising Star, and Social Impact. The COPE Foundation is one of four finalists in the Leadership Excellence Award category for its President and Founder Lillian Julien. The death of a child is the most devastating loss. Yet Lillian Julien rose above the loss of her daughter Michelle in 1996 to found an organization whose purpose is to support other
families living in similar circumstances. Shortly after Michelle’s death, Lillian’s daughter came to her in a dream letting her know she was okay but persuading her with the words, “you need to help each other.” Michelle’s message became Lillian’s mission—to create a healing center where parents and siblings could come together for emotional support and a variety of healing modalities. But Lillian didn’t stop with a vision; she turned vision into reality. She first created a spiritual center within her temple, which later became COPE. Recognized as a 501(c) (3) organization in 1999, COPE has grown from a select group of families
meeting in each other’s homes to a support network of over 1,000 families gathering and healing in generously donated space as well as a dedicated COPE House in Eisenhower Park. COPE helps bereaved parents, adult siblings and children heal after devastating losses through professionally-facilitated bereavement support groups; alternative healing therapies (like yoga, Reiki, Tai Chi, meditation, art and music therapy, and writing and spirituality workshops); professional workshops for mental health professionals, schools, clergy and funeral homes; a grief hotline; and Camp Erin® NYC, a bereavement camp for children ages 6-17 dealing
with the loss of someone close to them, including concurrent parent camp. Lilly works actively on a daily basis to not only provide support to the COPE families who turn to her for that purpose, but also to guide and spread the word about COPE and its mission and to spearhead fundraising efforts. Lilly continues to be the driving force behind COPE, serving as board president, chief fundraiser and even facilitator of the organization’s art/creative expression workshops. She is also the author of GriefQuest, a workbook for grieving parents, and speaks at conferences across the country. In 2008, Lillian was inducted into the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame
under the auspices of the Long Island Volunteer Center, and in 2014, she accepted the Roger E. Joseph prize from Hebrew Union College for her work with Camp Erin NYC. Previous recipients include Victor Kugler, who sheltered Anne Frank’s family, Rosa Parks and Daniel Pearl. “Lilly’s work has a definite social impact,” said Karen Flyer, COPE’s Executive Director. “Families who are able to heal from their profound grief are able to give back to their families, workplaces and society and mentor other families living with loss. This year’s events, 5K Walk-Run on Saturday, April 30th, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, and 10K, half and full marathons on Sunday, May 1st, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness.
