The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.
YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and significant other support groups •Educational groups
It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

Students Get A First-Hand Look At Law Enforcement
Whether they were watching a canine demonstration or trying on helmets and other tactical gear, students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were delighted to meet and learn from police officers during Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on March 11. Originally scheduled for January but delayed because of a snow day, the annual tradition at Unqua is highly anticipated by both students and the special guests. Police officers from Nassau County, New York City and local village departments came to talk to students and show off their equipment. Many of the speakers were parents and relatives of Unqua students. They represented a variety of police professions including patrol officers, commanders and specialty areas like the bomb squad, undercover detectives and canine and mounted units. In visiting the classes, police officers talked about their responsibilities, challenges and equipment. They shared stories from

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check
your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make
sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks:
Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check— name, signature, address— can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs,
shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online
criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact
with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture
it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line. 11th Annual All Kids Fair Has Many Exciting Activity Areas Families across Long Island cannot wait for the All Kids Fair’s first in-person event since before Covid-19. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been a fun day each April for kids and their families to spend time together and also learn about Long Island-based companies with services and products for them. There are many exciting reasons for families to attend this amazing event. Some of this year’s new additions are: • Four Video games, provided by Dave & Buster’s on “free play” all day • Soccer Demo Class, provided by Soccer Stars • Chorus Class and Piano Performance, provided by LJ Music Studios • Beanbag Toss for Prizes, provided by TherapyMyWay and Psychological Service LI • Bead Buddy Art Project, provided by Oasis Day Camp • Sewing and Fashion Design, provided by The Fashionable Stylista Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booths, Boxercise non-contact exercises, speech screenings, a guinea pig to touch, Italian ice samples, child ID cards, and cotton candy, all included with admission. Many of these are provided by sponsor Clowns. com. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island

families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 70 vendors, including camps, places to play, after-school activities, birthday party providers, and college planning. This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. The Fair has opportunities for all ages, including kids who have special needs. Families can interact inperson with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Jonathan Morris shared “The All Kids Fair is a great resource for new parents and old parents alike showcasing many different vendors with great ideas and opportunities for all families.” Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces
on all the happy kids.” A charity drive to benefit The Book Fairies, a 501c3 that provides books to those in need, will return this year.
