‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

With children and adults across the country coming together to celebrate the birthday of renowned writer Dr. Seuss, elementary school students in the Massapequa School District joined in the festivities. Read Across America was celebrated on March 2nd on what would have been the 113th birthday of the author. At East Lake Elementary School, second-grade classes went to Camp Read A Lot. “Campsites” were set up around the classrooms and campfires roared on the SmartBoards. Teachers Ashley Lindroth, Christine Marshall, Mary Upton and

Marian Augustine read stories to the children who were dressed in pajamas. Students and their “bunk mates” also shared together by ﬂashlight. Librarian Renee Susman led first-graders in an author and illustrator study of Dr. Seuss. She also encouraged all students in the school to read for at least 20 minutes that day. Kindergarten teacher Maureen Walsh had her students made “Cat in the Hat” hats with “at” words. “Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of children and learning,” Ms. Susman said. “When we celebrate Dr. Seuss and reading,

we send the message to children that reading is fun and important.” Birch Lane Elementary School celebrated the day by having fourth-graders read Dr. Seuss books to kindergartners. Librarian Jackie Lee said the older students served as reading role models for their younger peers. Many kindergartners also wore crazy socks to school to celebrate the Dr. Seuss book “Fox in Socks.” They also colored paper socks to look like the ones Oyster Bay Town they were wearing, and Supervisor Joseph S. made a “Cat in the Hat” Saladino and New York project by writing rhyming Rangers legends Adam words. The rocket launch has become a tradition over the past five years for ninth-graders in the afterschool club. Students construct their rockets from two-liter soda bottles and other materials such as cardboard, duct tape and string. The goal is to have it stay in the air as long as possible, and land without cracking an egg inside. Students build their rockets under the direction of advisers Maureen Burke and Nicholas Donohue. The science teachers guide them through the design and construction process, which takes several weeks of trial and error. The ninth-graders learn about aerodynamics and understand the ratio of weight to ﬂight time. “They help each other, which is nice, even though they’re competing against each other,” Ms. Burke said of the collaboration that exists among Science Club members. “It’s a lot of fun. They have a blast.” The blasts will take place in April and May, when the Science Club heads out to the back field to launch the rockets, which are half-filled with water,

Mary Poppins

A cast of 75 students took audience members back in time more than 100 years and across the Atlantic Ocean following two performances of “Mary Poppins” at Massapequa High School on March 3rd and 4th. The musical, based on the books by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, included students from the high school and the Ames campus. Junior Alex Zografos starred as the magical nanny and

commented that the show was “very upbeat, happy and good for all ages.” Senior Frank Sacino, who played Bert, opened the show with a tour of Cherry Tree Lane and introduced the audience to the Banks family. JoJo Icart played the father, George; junior Reneé Smestad portrayed the mother, Winifred; and freshmen Adam Koch and Sarah Benedict were the children, Michael and Jane.

Presented by the high school music department, the show featured popular musical numbers such as “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” It was directed by music teacher Katie Tauches and choreographed by Jassy Gill. Sue Sussman served as musical director and Andy Dwork as pit director.

FIFTH GRADE CHAMPIONS - After a highly competitive season in the St. Rose CYO fifth-

grade boys intramural division, Team D’Angelo and Team Casillo played in the Championship game on Saturday, March 4th. Team D’Angelo, lead by coaches Michael D’Angelo, Michael Miglino and Rob Zampolin, managed to hold on to an exciting three point victory (21-18) in the well-played final game of the season. The boys worked hard and had a lot of fun. Congratulations to them all!
