Christopher Guglielmo was a working prototype, according to his Magnet teacher Joanne Markowski. “This is to help you have a better car ride home from sporting practices and games without the stench of wet, dirty clothes,” Christopher said. “All you have to do is slide your clothes into the Triple S device, add a fabric softener sheet and attach a blow dryer to the end of the Triple S and turn it on. After a while, your clothes will be dry and smell great!” Earlier in the day, three real-life inventors, sparked students’ curiosity when they presented their inventions in small groups and discussed the invention process. Students were intrigued by Richard Edelman, who invented numerous board games and other innovations, Art Lih, longtime Massapequa resident who developed the LifeVac, a device that saves children from choking, and Kasia Sawicka who invented a vaccination patch that has been successfully tested and used to combat the ﬂu, whooping cough, anthrax and other antigens. The patch, called the ImmunoMatrix, is a non-invasive device that uses nanofibers to hold and effectively deliver a vaccine through the skin. “This was a wonderful culminating event for all our Magnet students from each elementary school who, after working for weeks on their inventions, are able to share ideas and celebrate their achievements,” said McKenna Elementary School Magnet teacher Elizabeth Natke. “Bringing in real-life inventors really drives home what inventors do and how their inventions can change the way we live.”

Strolling Into Spring By: Jamie Lynn Ryan March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and ﬂowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netﬂix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

Watch out “Shark Tank,” there’s a new crop of inventions that could be making their way to your show someday — and they were all produced by fifth-graders from Massapequa School District. Nearly 75 students in the district’s academically gifted Magnet program presented their ideas at the second annual Invention Convention at McKenna Elementary School, impressing parents and educators alike with their ingenuity. Need to cut out something but ordinary scissors won’t do the trick? Try Blissors, created by McKenna Elementary School fifth-grader Liliana Edzards. A pair of Blissors uses sensors and a telescopic robotic arm to follow any traced line and cut through difficult materials easily, making it ideal for crafters or fashion designers, according to its inventor. Set up like a science fair, students showcased their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills with colorful trifold displays that explained how they came up with the idea, how it operates, how it enhances people’s lives, what it costs and how they would market it. “As part of their research, we asked the students to think about ways they could make their lives easier; to think about things around their environment, their homes that could improve the way they do things and then they had to make sure it wasn’t invented before,” said Magnet teacher Lisa Gennardo of East Lake Elementary School. “They came up with some fantastic ideas.” “It’s called the Armband Bot,” began Evelyn McCabe, a fifth-grader from Unqua Elementary School. “When people get bullied they often don’t want to talk about it.

A Premier Jewish Sleepaway Camp

Kindergartners in Massapequa School District celebrated the 100th day of school by engaging in a host of activities that spanned across the curriculum, reinforcing their understanding of the triple-digit number. Youngsters, with the assistance of parent volunteers, busily honed their fine and gross motor skills by cutting, coloring, gluing, stacking, drawing and exercising in ways that marked the number 100. They played number games, made number charts and practiced math

concepts such as grouping by tens to make 100 and counting to 100 by ones, fives and tens. They examined weights and measures with activities such as measuring the length of a paper snake and testing the weight of objects compared to the weight of 100 pennies. They developed their English Language Arts skills as their teachers read books about the number 100, such as “Ten Apples up on Top,” by Dr. Seuss and then stacking 10 “apples” on top of their own heads. They

also wrote or drew pictures about what the number 100 means to them, and sang songs about the number. After completing their crafts and activities, the students proudly wore their 100th-day creations, such as necklaces made of 100 beads, 100th-day crowns and 100th-day stickers or T-shirts and snacked on special 100thday treats. Some classes also decorated goodie bags and filled them with 100 goodies by choosing 10 each of 10 different items.

The Massapequa High School Varsity Cheerleaders made history when they competed for the first time in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship at Walt Disney World. The team competed in the Super Varsity Division I category and placed among the top 11 teams. The competition is considered the most prestigious cheerleading championship in the country and was televised on ESPN and ESPN2 to over 100 million homes around the world, February 6th-7th. “It was my goal to set a new standard for the program by helping them

get to Disney and the feeling was so incredible!” said Head Coach Erica Jordan. After earning its bid to go to Nationals at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania in December, the squad spent the next two months preparing by practicing six days a week, while also cheering at all boys home basketball games and fundraising money for the trip. “The team cried happy tears when they received the bid and continued to display pride and honor the entire time we were in Disney,” Jordan said. “There are only a select amount of schools each year that receive bids to compete in

Disney and to be able to represent the Chiefs was a wonderful opportunity for Massapequa and has set a new expectation for the program which will continue to elevate the sport of cheerleading at Massapequa. I am honored to be a part of a wonderful school and program!” For the first time, the squad also qualified for the Nassau County Championship, which took place at Wantagh High School, February 21st. The team came in third in the Large Varsity Division I category. It was the first county championship since the state recognized cheerleading as a sport.
