Thanking the Troops Elementary students throughout the Massapequa School District showed their appreciation for the men and women in the armed services by taking part in the Valentines for Veterans program. All six elementary schools participated, and the cards were sent to either the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County or

New York State Assembly for delivery to the troops. Children shared their gratitude through colorful cards with personal messages and well wishes. Of the thousands of cards completed, some were shaped liked hearts while others had patriotic themes. Lockhart Elementary School Principal Stephen Scarallo said it is important

to show that the country’s servicemen and women are not forgotten. Birch Lane Elementary School first-grade teacher Gina Berland added that it had the dual purpose of teaching children to give thanks while allowing them to practice their literacy and handwriting skills.

Science XP Homer Simpson was the inspiration for a science experiment at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, in which ninth-graders studied the concept of homeostasis. Science teacher Gwen Bonn said the “Homer-ostasis” project was designed to give biology students hands-on exploration of excretion in their study of the human body. The young scientists worked

in teams to keep a leaking cup full of water while also dealing with several other variables. They had to use a mixture of hot and cold water to keep the temperature in a certain range, and add nutrients to keep it at a strong yellow color, similar to Homer Simpson. Homer’s face was drawn on the outside of each cup, and the students had to keep the water level up

to his eyes to keep him alive. Thinking Like Olympians To gear up for the winter Olympics, students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District imagined themselves as athletes. Children made their own Olympic selfies in a project that combined literacy and technology skills. After using their Chromebooks to learn more about the games,

such as reading about why Pyongyang, South Korea was chosen as the host city, they selected an Olympic sport to further research. Each student envisioned him or herself as an athlete in that sport and wrote a passage about it. Information included a history of the sport, noted athletes and fun facts. Students used their

Chromebook webcams to snap headshots and add their faces to caricatures of winter-sport athletes. With the help of computer teacher assistant Donna Meyer, they completed their projects using Google Slides in the computer lab. Amy Curry, a sixth-grade teacher at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Social Studies Elementary Classroom Teacher Award by the New York State Council for the Social Studies. Ms. Curry, the daughter of a former Massapequa teacher, has worked in the district for two decades and presently teaches English language arts and social studies. Prior to coming to Berner for the 2017-18 school year, she taught several grades at Unqua Elementary School, including sixth grade for the past 15 years. “It is always an honor to be recognized for the work you do,” she said. “So many people in Massapequa School District, during my 20 years of teaching, have helped and influenced my teaching in their own special ways. I work

with a diverse group of talented, creative and hardworking individuals.” She was nominated by Brian Dowd, a retired Massapequa and former curriculum associate for social studies. The statewide recognition acknowledges Ms. Curry’s strong grasp of the sixthgrade social studies curriculum, which focuses on ancient civilizations. She said that the topic lends itself to fun and engaging lessons and she takes pride in allowing students to learn through hands-on activities. During the study of India, she incorporates meditation and yoga. As a teacher, Ms. Curry said her favorite moment is “the look you see on a child’s face when you know you have captured their attention and you see a student invested, captivated and eager to learn more.”

She received the Margaret Simon Award for Excellence in Elementary Social Studies Education by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies in 2015. Ms. Curry was also contributing author to the book “Growing a Growth Mindset” by Kevin Sheehan and Jessica Ryan. Ms. Curry will receive the award at the NYSCSS luncheon on March 8th in Albany.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

The Student Council at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently organized a schoolwide book drive to benefit the Book Fairies, a nonprofit organization that collects reading material for people in need throughout

metropolitan New York. Students and staff generously donated gently used books from January 29th through February 2nd. McKenna was able to fill 26 boxes. Student Council members, under the direction of advisers Erin Rohan and Mary Ellen

Scheffler, sorted the books into four categories - baby/ preschool, elementary, middle and high school and adult.

Fifteen student-athletes at Massapequa High School will go on to play for college teams, and they were recognized at a national letter of intent signing ceremony on February 7th. The students will take their talents to schools on Long Island, upstate New York, Pennsylvania, New England and as far away as Minnesota. Five members of the girls soccer team signed their college commitments including Haylee Poltorak

(Binghamton University), Morgan Camarda (Siena College), Daniella Felicetti (LIU Post), Kristen McLeod and Meaghan O’Callaghan (both Molloy College). Field hockey teammates Shannon Bernhart and Jacqueline Kanapes will both be suiting up together at SUNY New Paltz. College Commitments

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

A dozen teams took part in the New York competition. The first round featured four players per school who could buzz in to answer various questions. If a “toss up” question was answered correctly, that team received a bonus question in which all members could work together to answer. A

halftime team challenge question was extended and written. Massapequa remained in the round robin action until beaten by eventual champion Mt. Sinai High School. The third-place finish earned Massapequa a trophy and tickets to the Long Island aquarium with back stage passes. Adviser Gregory Kwas commended the four players for their hard work and preparation leading up to the competition.

Arcade Imagination Inspired by a young boy who made arcade games out of cardboard boxes, students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District did just the same. Third-graders took part in the STEAM activity and the result was a room full of creative games. The students learned about Caine’s Arcade from a YouTube video before using recycled materials such as cardboard tubes, plates, cups and paper to make their own. To

prepare their minds for design thinking, students participated in a thinking routine called See-ThinkWonder in which they analyzed pictures of arcade games made by other children. This helped students visualize all the parts needed in a game and helped create expectations for the project. They then used the engineering design process to imagine, plan, create and improve their games over the course of six sessions of enrichment.

In addition to building the games, students had to make up rules. Chinese New Year Craft Elementary and middle school students from the Massapequa School District recently came together to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Berner Middle School students who are taking Mandarin Chinese as their world language traveled to Birch Lane Elementary

School on February 9th. They joined the secondgraders who came together in the cafeteria to learn about the holiday and make a craft. Mandarin Chinese teacher Tiffany Fan talked to students about Chinese New Year traditions and customs. She spoke about

the Year of the Dog and showed the children how to write “Dog Year” in Mandarin. Second-graders then replicated it with assistance from their Berner peers. The older and younger students also worked together to create paper origami dogs.
