The Incident Report Three customer service calls. Five “live” online chats. No fewer than four individual “incident” numbers to reference. And still, nearly six weeks later, no resolution. Allow me to back up and fill in the blanks. A few days after Black Friday, I decided to use a credit obtained through a retailer-whoshall-not-be-named, coupled with several other coupons and promotions, to purchase a pair of sneakers (and socks) online. No problem. Order processed, confirmed, waiting for shipment. Over a week later, an e-mail stating that a portion of my order (aforementioned sneakers) had been cancelled, as they were suddenly “out of stock.” The socks, however, arrived all by their lonesome several days later. Annoying? Sure. But, more to the point, what became of my credit which, thanks to the delay in processing, was now expired, having not been applied to my

now-cancelled purchase? One would assume I would be entitled to some sort of refund/coupon/ gift card in order to make future use of this sum, now $2.99 less thanks to the socks. One would also think that a store’s customer service representatives would be well versed in how to handle such a scenario, seeing as I couldn’t have been the first person to ever encounter such a cancelled order/ credit issue. And yet, here we are, approaching the close of January, and still no sign of that “customer is always right” mantra. No, all I’ve gotten is the runaround, everything from “your gift card is in the mail” to “we can only apply the credit to a future online order, but the time frame has already expired” to “we’ll make an exception and e-mail you a new coupon code to use in-store or online” … none of which has occurred. The best part – and I do mean that in the most facetious way possible – is that each attempt to

contact customer service has been met with an equally incompetent representative who, despite my relaying of the entire situation and the latest “incident” number provided, have no clue what I’m talking about, why I was given such an array of inaccurate information, or, quite frankly, what to do to rectify the issue. And this is their profession. Inspires all sorts of confidence, doesn’t it? As I write this, a confirmation e-mail has arrived in my inbox, detailing my “inquiry” (which one?) and providing not one, but two, completely different incident numbers, one in the subject line, the other in the body of the rather nondescript form letter. There is also a customer service number to contact which, upon dialing, takes you on a whirlwind tour of automated extensions before settling into hold music for a solid 15 minutes, followed by dead silence as the call disconnects. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I refuse to shop online. Ever. Again.

In just over a month, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $8.5 million in low-interest disaster loans for 242 businesses and residents in the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy. The SBA on December 2nd reopened the disaster loan filing period for businesses and residents recovering from Superstorm Sandy. “The legislation that reopened the Superstorm Sandy disaster loan filing period until December 1st, 2016 will do much to contribute to the continued rebuilding of the disaster areas’ infrastructure,” said SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet. “More than $8.5 million in low interest SBA disaster loans have been approved over the past month. This is a great start and we look forward to helping more small businesses, homeowners and renters with their long-term disaster recovery needs— regardless of whether they have an existing disaster loan, need more funds, or are applying for an SBA disaster loan for the first time.” The Recovery Improvements for Small Entities (RISE) After Disaster Act of 2015 gives the SBA Administrator the authority to make disaster loans for areas affected by Superstorm Sandy for a period of one year. Raymond J. Lockhart Elementary School made a child’s wish come true by raising nearly $5,100 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The effort has been part of the school’s tradition for about 27 years and is the longest-running school fundraiser for the organization. This year, in a student body vote, the wish of an 11 year-old girl named Dedanaa who has sickle cell disease was granted. Dedanaa’s wish is to travel to Ghana in West Africa to visit family members she

never met before. Because of the generosity of the Lockhart community, Dedanaa will finally be able to wrap her arms around her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, making this family reunion the best kind of medicine. Lockhart’s Student Council presented a large cardboard check in the amount of $5,050 to Patricia Clemency, the regional CEO of the MakeA-Wish Foundation, after the school’s annual holiday concert. Additional funds came in after the check

was presented. Clemency visits Lockhart every year to recognize the students’ efforts by presenting them with a special plaque and to remind them of the tremendous impact they are making in the life of an ailing child and the child’s family. Lockhart students and their families raise money for the cause each year by participating in a walk-a-thon in the fall, which is organized by sixth-grade teacher Donald Bresnihan.

Alumni basketball players from as early as 1977 have been contacted to participate in this year’s event, and spectators will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and win prizes, such as a Mets signed baseball, a Jets signed jersey, tickets to Knicks and Rangers games and many other prizes that were donated by local merchants. As in previous years, money raised from the event will support the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Cash donations

Woman’s Club Happenings

The Woman’s Club of Massapequa is part of the General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC), founded in 1890 is a federation of over 3.000 local women’s clubs which promote civic improvements, through volunteer service. Many of its activities and service projects are done independently by local clubs through their communities or GFWC partnerships. GFWC remains one of the world’s largest and oldest nonpartisan, nondenominational women’s volunteer service organizations. The Massapequa Club’s

first meeting was on October 14th, 1924 with 38 charter members. The club of today has close to 100 members. The Child Welfare Holiday Fundraiser Brunch, chaired by Yolanda Padula and cochair Helene Berk at the Southward Ho Country Club was an outstanding success with close to a hundred wonderful raffle prizes donated by members and local merchants. Entertainment was by Tommy Sullivan, original member of Jonny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge. Child Welfare Chair Del Genovese did the introductions and thanked

all for their support of this very worthy event which enables the Club to help needy families with children in the Massapequa’s. Churches in the area provide us with an overview of the family’s situation. The Massapequa High School “A” Cappella Choir performed prior to the business part of the December meeting and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Hispanic Scholar

In recognition of his outstanding academic accomplishments, Massapequa High School senior David Marques was named a National Hispanic Scholar by the College Board. He is one of 5,000 high school students of Hispanic/Latino heritage to be selected for the honor. To qualify, students must achieve a high score on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT), which varies by region. Students must also maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or better, be of at least one quarter Hispanic/Latino descent and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The program sends a list of all recognized students to colleges and universities that are particularly interested in high-achieving seniors of Hispanic/Latino heritage.

Friendship Series Announced The Town will once again partner with the Village of Greenport, and to additional youth hockey programs, to present a special youth hockey showcase called the “Friendship Series Ice Hockey Games.” Building on the popularity of ice hockey games being played outside, the two-day event allows youth hockey players ages to take to the ice for a series of friendly youth hockey contests and experience playing games

at home and on the road. The popular event was initiated in 2014, and will have its third renewal this year. The Mites division, the Squirts division and Peewee Division players all played in the first part of the series, held in Greenport on January 16th. The action will shift to the outdoor rink at the Town of Oyster Bay’s SyossetWoodbury Community Park on Saturday, February 6th for eight additional games. Joining the Town of

Oyster Bay Youth Hockey Program and the Village of Greenport will be teams representing Superior Ice Rink of Kings Park and the Rinx Youth Hockey Program. The mites and squirts division will be taking the ice at SyossetWoodbury Community Park with faceoff for the first game at 8 a.m. The action continues throughout the day. Eight games will be played with the final matchup slated to begin at 4 p.m. “We are extremely

excited and proud to work closely with another island municipality and other youth hockey programs to bring this outstanding recreational opportunity to our young people,” Councilman Chris Coschignano said. “We are always pleased to show off our outstanding facilities here in the Town. When planning this groundbreaking event, it quickly became evident that the Village of Greenport shared our philosophy with respect to youth

sports and its ability to foster teamwork, character and perseverance. Both municipalities have a keen interest in providing the opportunity for our kids to recreate and keep physically fit.” The concept of playing games at opposite ends of Long Island was exciting for the players. This unique event gives young participants the feel for playing travel hockey in a friendly and enjoyable manner while still staying on Long Island. We are

pleased that this has become an annual event and residents from both the Village of Greenport and the Town of Oyster Bay come out to support the youngsters.
