ack in December, the New School of Performing Arts put on its premier performance. Following a series of free trial lessons, New School’s director and owner gave a demonstration of what the school’s students were learning. The groups ranged from Pre-K through 8th grade. The school intends to have regular performances that highlight the students’ work, as well as many family oriented events, in the future.

on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far. Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be. Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home

before attempting heart surgery? If the answers seem obvious to you, consider this: Should your skills as a parent be learned only through “trial and error”? All the love we have

for our children does not automatically make us effective parents. Parenting, like any other skill, is something we learn, and learning “on the job” can be frustrating. As parents we become confused when, after constant repetition of the same theme, children still do not respond. “Active Parenting” is perhaps the most effective program ever offered in the “how to” of raising children. YES Community Counseling Center will be conducting an Active Parenting program for parents of teens (ages 1218) at the Massapequa office, located at 75 Grand Avenue, beginning Wednesday, January 20th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for six weeks. The cost of the program is $75 per family. If you are interested in attending please contact Kathleen Coletta at YES Community Counseling Center, 516.799.3203. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

Jamie Bogenshutz, YES Executive Director, stated, “Receiving this distinction is quite an honor, particularly as our agency works tirelessly to maintain the highest of all standards, not only relating to its financial competence but as it relates to serving all its constituents.” The BBB is the nation’s only comprehensive charity evaluator, assisting donors in making sound giving decisions. Donors

know they can trust a charity if it is accredited by the BBB. Their broad standards go beyond what the law requires and dives deeper than other charity monitoring organizations. Each BBB charity report process involves a rigorous review using 20 holistic BBB Charity Standards, interaction with charity officials about corrective actions needed to address deficiencies, and quality control measures to assure report accuracy. Thousands of charities have reports available to the public at Give.org. “The public trust is served well by charities that earn their BBB Accredited Charity status,” says Claire Rosenzweig, President & CEO of the BBB Education & Research Foundation. “Donors can feel confident in their giving decisions knowing that YES Community Counseling Center is

identified as meeting the high standards set within the BBB 20 Standards of Charity Accountability.” Be Happy Pleasure is Nature’s test, her sign of approval. When man is happy, he is in harmony with himself and with his environment. Oscar Wilde

Author Jodi Picoult will appear at the SAC Auditorium at Stony Brook University on Sunday, April 10th, at 2 p.m. to discuss the 2016 Long Island Reads selection, Leaving Time. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The event is free, and all are welcome. Free tickets will be available through Nassau and Suffolk public libraries beginning February 1st, and to all beginning March 1st at the following website: longislandreads2016. eventbrite.com Jodi Picoult is the award-winning author of 23 novels, including seven consecutive #1 bestsellers. Her books have been translated into 34 languages. Four have been made into television movies, and one, My Sister’s Keeper, was a bigscreen release from New Line Cinema. She was born and raised in Nesconset, Long Island, and studied Creative Writing at Princeton University.

She received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Dartmouth College in 2010 and another from the University of New Haven in 2012. She and her husband Tim and their three children live in Hanover, New Hampshire with two Springer spaniels, two rescue puppies, two donkeys, two geese, ten chickens, a smattering of ducks, and the occasional Holstein. Leaving Time is the story of Jenna, a teen searching for her missing mother, a renowned elephant expert who disappeared from their elephant sanctuary in New Hampshire when Jenna was just a toddler. Now, 10 years later, Jenna enlists the help of a disgraced psychic and a disillusioned ex-cop in the hope of uncovering new evidence which may lead to her mother’s whereabouts. Featuring the author’s trademark smart, accessible writing style and a powerful mystery as well as deep insights into

Special Guest Speaker elephant behavior, Leaving Time keeps readers enthusiastically turning the pages. In addition to the author event at Stony Brook University, there will be book discussions and related free lectures, films, and performances at public libraries across Long Island. For more information about this event, contact Long Island Reads cochairs Beth Gates at beth@myrml.org or Janet Schneider at jmhschneider@msn.com. Long Island Reads is an island-wide reading initiative sponsored by the Nassau Library System and the Public Libraries of Suffolk County. Each year, a committee of librarians chooses a book that was written by a Long Island author and/or set on Long Island. Book lovers in Nassau and Suffolk come together to read the book, participate in discussions, and enjoy related events in their public libraries.

Student Spotlight THE VIOLIN SUBMITTED BY: MARYORIE SARAVIA, GRADE 6, BAY SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL I sound like a bird, singing in a high pitch, in the grey morning. The smell of chocolate, I give you when you play me. When I sing, you will be pulled into the music I sing. I’m the only star you can see in the dark night. When you feel my smooth wood, you will become one with me. You will taste the song I sing to you. You will cry with happiness when I sing to you. I will leave you wanting more. My bow and I will cast a magic spell, will make you fall in love with every note I sing. My strings are shining diamonds that cast a spell that will never be replaced. I will never leave your head, I will be forever in your mind. ATTENTION ALL MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL WRITERS: Entries Should Be Between 300-400 Words. Please Provide Your Name, Age, Hometown And School. Send In Your “Guest Column” For Consideration To: jlynn@southbaysneighbor.com; Include “Student Spotlight” In The Subject Line.

Back in December, the New School of Performing Arts put on its premier performance. Following a series of free trial lessons, New School’s director and owner gave a demonstration of what the school’s students were learning. The groups ranged from pre-school/ kindergarten age through to 8th grade. There were musical ensembles, playing pieces specifically arranged for xylophones and other percussion instruments, and a series of monologues inspired by Mo Willems’ books, that 4th and 5th grade theater students wrote and performed. The school hopes to offer its students an opportunity to develop their imagination and creativity. “Imagination is one of the greatest mental faculties that we possess. The ability to see, feel and sense something that no one else can is innate in all of us - it is creation, and we, at our core, are all creators,” says director, Karen Schooley. Those who nurture and develop this skill the move our society forward claims Schooley. New School of Performing Arts offers theater, musical theater, but also some very unique music classes that are not found in other after school programs. The Performing Arts require the performer to discover the intention of a work and transmit that to an audience. In order to do this in a convincing way, he/she must embody that feeling or message physically and mentally. He/she must imagine and re-create the work in such a way that they audience is drawn in and is living and feeling along with

the performer. There is a magic in this connection as performer and audience unite. What the New School of Performing Arts is hoping to do is give as many students as possible the chance to become active in developing their awareness of works of art and how they pertain to their lives. At New School of Performing Arts, they believe that, in our modern society, we spend so much time in front of screens that we miss many of the opportunities to directly connect to ourselves and to others. Nowadays, much

of our entertainment is passive, and through performance, we not only entertain ourselves and others, we create and connect; we grow and develop. The New School of Performing Arts intends to have regular performances that highlight the students’ work as well as many family oriented events such as family karaoke, talent shows and dances where families can have fun and connect with each other and the Massapequa community.

BE MORE POSITIVE, HAPPY, HEALTHY & SMART That is what you will learn by reading, Positivity! Unlike other books regarding happiness, this book builds a foundation on being smarter, obtaining the skills necessary toward gainful employment and managing money successfully. How can a person be happy if they do not have a good job, cannot give a good speech and cannot invest wisely? In the highly competitive world in which we live, a foundation must be built that makes people happy and healthy. The foundation starts with positive thinking and a healthy lifestyle but it should be coupled with continuing education and prowess in accumulating and managing money. This answers the question, how can a person be happy in today’s world. “Reading Positivity is a game changer for every reader. The unique wisdom and philosophy of life that Harry Edelson shares proves that life can be easy and joyful for everyone. Imagine a world if seven billion people lived by Positivity! Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. Harry Edelson has figured out true keys to a good life – which is the one common denominator everyone wants. And I know, because I’ve interviewed over 400 of the top CEOs, and I see a lot of wisdom and very successful people…and Harry has truly figured it out. What a gift you offer in this book.” ROBERT REISS, HOST & CEO, THE CEO SHOW “As Benjamin Franklin said: ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ The wisdom in Harry Edelson’s book is like finding a great investment. It continues to grow in value and will pay dividends throughout your life. This is the same philosophy that the brilliant investor, George Soros, has advocated through his Open Society Foundations where I served as a Trustee for many years” JOHN W. ALLEN, INT’L INVESTMENT BANKER AND CHAIRMAN OF GREATER CHINA CORP “The interesting thing about Harry Edelson is that he is usually the smartest guy in the room and what is amazing, the happiest guy in the room. His book tells it all and can be easily absorbed by adults and students alike.” ELIZABETH KABLER, TRUSTEE, ANNENBERG FOUNDATION TRUST AT SUNNYLANDS, FOUNDER, NY CENTER FOR LIVING

answering the questions. After the presentations were completed, all their research and creative projects were put on display in the museum. “Creating the museum and bringing together all that the students learned in a very hands-on, tangible way not only made learning fun and enjoyable for the students, but made it memorable and a more valuable learning experience,” Dorsa said. Students were excited and eager to share what they learned with other students in their school. Allison Gonzalez, who was dressed as Cleopatra, said of the assignment, “It was a lot of work but it paid off because I liked how all the kids came over to me and asked me questions and I was able to answer them,” she said. Sixth-grader Michael Maron, who created a pyramid and a face mask as part of his project,

said he enjoyed learning about mummification and about the structures the Egyptians built and why they were built in certain ways for the pharaohs. In addition to their research projects, students experienced the unique and interactive exploration of world history through a special assembly by guest speaker and world traveler Mike Harrold. Harrold used a Power Point presentation, artifacts and anecdotes to educate, motivate and promote multicultural awareness and respect. Through his slide presentation, Harrold brought the students on a journey through Egypt, India and China and helped develop a sense of appreciation for cultures all over the world. The assembly was coordinated in partnership with the PTA Arts in Education Committee.

Making Wishes Come True

Raymond J. Lockhart Elementary School made a child’s wish come true by raising nearly $5,100 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The effort has been part of the school’s tradition for about 27 years and is the longest-running school fundraiser for the organization. This year, in a student body vote, the wish of an 11 year-old girl named Dedanaa who has sickle cell disease was granted. Dedanaa’s wish is to travel to Ghana in West Africa to visit family members she

never met before. Because of the generosity of the Lockhart community, Dedanaa will finally be able to wrap her arms around her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, making this family reunion the best kind of medicine. Lockhart’s Student Council presented a large cardboard check in the amount of $5,050 to Patricia Clemency, the regional CEO of the MakeA-Wish Foundation, after the school’s annual holiday concert. Additional funds came in after the check

was presented. Clemency visits Lockhart every year to recognize the students’ efforts by presenting them with a special plaque and to remind them of the tremendous impact they are making in the life of an ailing child and the child’s family. Lockhart students and their families raise money for the cause each year by participating in a walk-athon in the fall, which is organized by sixth-grade teacher Donald Bresnihan.

MAKING WISHES COME TRUE - Raymond J. Lockhart School granted its 27th wish to an ailing child by raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Joining the celebration were district administrators and Patricia Clemency, third from left, CEO of the Foundation.

NORTH MASSAPEQUA - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 13, 2016 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

The entire Birch Lane student body and parents had the opportunity to tour a museum of Ancient Egyptian artifacts and ask “pharaohs,” such as Cleopatra and King Khufu questions about their lives, right in their own school. The museum was created by sixth-grade students in Lisa Dorsa’s social studies classes to showcase what they learned after completing extensive research on the ancient civilization. Each sixth grader researched a pharaoh using Google Chromebooks to access websites and videos, and used their research to create a slide presentation and to develop 10 interview questions. Each student took on the persona of the pharaoh they researched as their peers asked them the questions they developed. The students also presented a prop, project or costume they created to their classmates while

Israeli & International Folk Dancing will be presented on Wednesdays at RJO Intermediate School, Church Street and Old Dock Road in Kings Park, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For information, contact 631.269.6894.

Free Cervical Screenings During January, Cervical Health Awareness Month, the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) wants to spread the word that cervical cancer is preventable and highly treatable if found early. Getting screened for cervical cancer with a Pap test is the key to prevention and survival. Screening is available to both insured and uninsured women at NUMC. “The New York State Department of Health’s Cancer Services Program (CSP) provides free

cervical cancer screening to uninsured women — a subpopulation of women less likely to get screened,” said Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/ NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the most recent New York State data, about 70% of women without insurance have had a Pap test, compared to roughly 85% of women with health insurance.” The impact of insurance status on screening behavior was recently highlighted by American Cancer Society

researchers. They found that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was likely the cause of a large increase in the number of younger women (under the age of 26) getting diagnosed for cervical cancer at an early stage. The ACA allows for dependents to remain on their parents’ health insurance until the age of 26, giving these women the opportunity to get Pap tests, which can find cervical cancer early. “It’s wonderful that the ACA has helped some women get screened

for cancer, but the fact remains that there are people who still remain uninsured,” said Dr. Politi. “The Cancer Services Program is here to provide life-saving cancer screening to our most needy residents.” The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women, ages 40 and older, in every county and borough of the state. The program also provides free breast and colorectal cancer screening to

eligible New York State residents. There usually aren’t any symptoms of cervical cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage, making regular Pap tests the key to an early diagnosis. “It is especially important for women who have not had a Pap test within the past five years to get screened. Six out of ten cervical cancers occur in women who have never received a Pap test or have not had one in the past five years. Don’t delay, talk to your doctor or call the

Cancer Services Program at NUMC,” (516.572.3300) said Dr. John Riggs, Chair of OB/GYN at NUMC. To find a Cancer Services Program in your community, visit, call 1.866.442.CANCER (2262) or visit http://www.health. ny.gov/diseases/cancer/ services/community_ resources/. For more information about cervical cancer, visit http://www.health.ny.gov/ diseases/cancer/cervical/.
