Community members are invited to attend the sixth annual Coaches and Alumni vs. Cancer Basketball Game on Saturday, January 7th, from noon to 2 p.m., at Massapequa High School. This exciting event, coordinated by Massapequa’s head varsity coach Martin Voigt, is a collaboration between the Massapequa High School boys varsity basketball team, team alumni, the boys booster club and family and friends of the boys basketball program in
an effort to raise money for cancer. Alumni basketball players from as early as 1977 have been invited to participate in this year’s event. Spectators will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and win prizes, such as gift baskets, a Jets signed jersey, tickets to Knicks and Rangers games and many other prizes that were donated by local merchants. As in previous years, money raised from the event will support the Lustgarten Foundation
for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Cash donations by players and friends or checks made out to “Lustgarten Foundation” will be accepted. It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

The event featured a powerful presentation, “Ryan’s Story,” by John Halligan who told his heart-wrenching story of his son who endured years of bullying and ultimately committed suicide. There were also numerous activities centered on the themes represented in the book, “The Seventh Most Important Thing,”

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the holiday celebrations as
imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time
to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Throughout his 40 year relationship with Old Westbury Gardens, Gachot has been involved in countless preservation

Kindergartners celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, dazzling their parents with holiday songs in a morning performance.
During the annual Kindergarten Jingle Ball, students sang “Twinkle, Twinkle Hanukkah Lights,” “Jingle Bells,” “I’m a Little Latke” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The

Granting a Wish Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District continued its long-standing partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation by donating more than $5,000 to the local chapter to fulfill a child’s wish. The fundraising effort began with a walkathon in November, led by sixthgrade teacher and Student Council adviser Don Bresnihan. It culminated with the Make-A-Wish Holiday Concert on Dec. 23, with the band, orchestra and chorus performing
an array of holiday music before ending with a group singalong. After the concert, students returned to their classrooms to vote on which child’s wish they would like to support. They chose to assist 11-yearold Sean, who is battling cancer and wants to have a big party. Gail Monaco, representing the local Make-A-Wish chapter, was on hand to receive a check for $5,688, raised by Lockhart students and staff. She spoke about the
organization’s work and presented the school with a commemorative plaque to mark the 28th year of the partnership. “This is an incredible amount of money raised by our little school community,” said Principal Stephen Scarallo. “To help grant the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition, and to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy, is what motivates and inspires the students at Lockhart Elementary School.”

Mural Planned A new mural will soon grace the halls of Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus following a schoolwide competition. Ninth-grade Jaclyn Portogallo created the winning design. The school’s Shared Decision Making Committee, comprised of administrators, teachers, students and parents, looks at ways to beautify the school and decided to replenish a mural near the main entrance.
Students submitted designs based on the theme, “What does is mean to be a part of the Massapequa Chiefs family?” More than 50 entries were submitted and the committee chose the top 10. Students then voted online and selected Jaclyn’s design. Her blue and gold mural incorporates the Chiefs logo and an acrostic using the word “chief” to highlight the school’s main principles character, honesty,
integrity, excellence and family. Jaclyn and fellow art students will begin painting the mural in the new year. “We’re very enthusiastic and very excited about the student contribution to the school culture and climate,” said Tania Willman, the executive assistant to the principal. “Jaclyn did a beautiful job. We’re very proud of her work and all the students who made an effort to contribute.”
