By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of ﬂurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!
