Life As We Know It By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “See the glass half full, and find the good in everyone…” So wrote one of my former teachers in the pages of my high school yearbook, a sentiment that seems to resonate more with each passing year. Too often do we become consumed by the monotony of our daily routines, allowing the negativity which surrounds us to engulf what always begins as the best of intentions. With this New Year, I hope to maintain a certain degree of optimism in the face of what can only be classified as Life. As Frank Sinatra sang, “You’re ridin’ high in April, shot down in May; but I know I’m gonna change that tune when I’m back on top, back on top in June…” And so it

goes, month-to-month, dayto-day, even hour-to-hour. You just simply don’t know what may be in store over the horizon, an uncertainty which inspires both excitement and apprehension, depending upon your makeup. The only constant is the need to adapt with the rolling tide, rather than allowing it to sweep us away. We may not be able to control what obstacles come our way; but we can surely dictate how we react to them. So, as we begin 2016, let us dispense with whatever shallow resolutions we have most likely already broken, in favor of something far more meaningful – a new way of thinking, of being, of living. Let us find that good in everyone and see the bright side of the cloudiest of days. Call it misplaced idealism

if you will; but to me, it is perhaps the greatest sense of realism there is. Learning to deal with life in all its glory and chaos is as real as it gets. To all my readers, I thank you for yet another year of support, of sweet sentiments and gentle critiques. 2015 was a year of milestones: my 10th year working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 500th In Step column and the expansion of our blossoming sister publication, Seasons™ Magazine. It was also, let us not fail to mention, the debut of Buddy the Betta and his occasional In Swim features. {Buddy sends his regards as well, and thanks his supporters for their constant fan letters and accolades.} Here’s to another year of making memories… and, most importantly, of making the best of things.

The team of Nassau BOCES environmentalists recently took a trip to a “superfund” site in Glen Cove. A superfund site is an ecological site that his been contaminated by pollutants to the point that its ecosystem is dying. The students collected a full spectrum of samples including microorganisms, plant and animal life. For comparison, they did the same at a “pristine” site - one that has been untouched by pollutants in Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve. With their fieldwork complete, the Doshi STEM research team took the samples back to their school lab for analysis. A nearby stream is carrying the runoff away from the factory and depositing the pollutants in the affected ecosystem. The students hope to learn more as the study unfolds, including ways to resolve the pollution problem and return the site to health once more. “Our students are developing an intricate understanding of the effect humans have on the environment,” Living Environment Teacher Paulette D’Allessio said of the Doshi science students and their work. “They are learning about the impact we have on our local ecosystems and how it effects us, then expanding upon that knowledge to work toward possible solutions. All the while, they are getting invaluable hands-on lessons in science, as well as an opportunity to give back to their community.” “While textbooks are an essential teaching tool, there is no greater lesson for our students than going out into the field and directly interacting with what they are studying,” said Doshi STEM Institute Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “When our students see firsthand that there are real world implications to their research with real world applications, it creates a genuine enthusiasm for the curriculum.”

St Joseph’s, whose instructors will offer the course, has developed a highly respected hospitality and tourism management undergraduate program that has a proven track record with successful job placement of students prior to and upon graduation. The soldering and welding sequence will be run by Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center, under

an agreement with St. Joseph’s. The training will begin at the Opportunity Resource Center and continue at the college’s Brentwood campus. The sequence will lead to American Welding Society certification. The Opportunity Resource Center will also be a location for the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s Consumer Assistance for the Aged, Blind and Disabled Program. That program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, provides

in-person enrollment assistance for programs and services. The target groups are people who fall into one of three categories: certified blind, certified disabled or 65 years of age or older. Additionally, Medicare recipients looking for supplemental Medicaid insurance, as well as people looking for Medicare savings programs to help with Medicare expenses can apply for those programs with help from the enrollers. The enrollers will be at the Opportunity Resource

Center one day a month: January 14th, February 11th, March 10th, April 14th, May 12th, June 9th, July 14th, August 10th, September 8th, October 13th, November 10th and December 8th.
