While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

New York Is Home To Historic St. Patrick’s Day Parade

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held

by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

A Saint Who’s Not A Saint

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

(ages 5-12) starting on Wednesday, March 25th at the Massapequa Bar Harbour Library located at 40 Harbor Lane in Massapequa Park from 7:00pm – 8:30pm for six consecutive weeks. Free Musical Performances At Libraries Throughout March Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh today announced that the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services will be offering free musical performances during the month of March 2020 at local libraries throughout the Town to continue the 2019-2020 Distinguished Artists Concert Series, which will continue to run monthly through May 2020. Councilwoman Walsh stated, “The Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Department of Community and Youth Services has worked tirelessly over the years to bring our residents the finest entertainment possible, providing a wide spectrum of music,

comedic and dramatic programs to suit every taste. The Distinguished Artists Concert Series is a great example of this, and I encourage residents looking to expand their cultural palette to take advantage of these free concert held each month at local libraries.”

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition recently acknowledged community members who have dedicated their time and energy to reduce opioid and substance misuse in the Massapequas. Nassau County Police Department POP (problemoriented policing) Officers Steven Russell and Thomas Lively along with Dr. Mary Koslap-Petraco, were presented recognition awards at MTAC’s recent Steering Committee meeting. POP Officers Russell and Lively were acknowledged for their support of MTAC’s Secure

Monitor Dispose Campaign and outreach to inform the community to Secure Monitor and Dispose of unnecessary medications in the home. Dr. KoslapPetraco was recognized for her efforts in educating healthcare providers and patients to determine how and when opioids should be prescribed for chronic pain. Since 1997, Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) has been Massapequas’ community coalition to prevent substance misuse among youth. MTAC has been recognized as one of

our nation’s leaders in mobilizing communities to prevent youth substance use and was awarded the prestigious Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program Grant by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in the Executive Office of the President of the United States. YES Community Counseling Center is the fiscal agent for MTAC’s DFC Grant which provides funding to community coalitions to strengthen infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in youth substance use.

Massapequa High School hosted a full-day environmental conference on Feb. 27 featuring expert speakers and information booths. All Things Environmental was coordinated by students from Team ECHO and their adviser, Bob Hempel. Team ECHO – Environmental Conservation at Home – is a student-led club that aims to increase awareness about the environment and take practical steps to improve the community and the planet. Past initiatives have included school campus and beach cleanups as well as tree plantings. The yearly environmental day has grown each year since its inception and this year’s event featured several speakers including Erich Dietterle from the Long Island-based Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. He spoke about his organization’s efforts to promote marine conservation through action and educated students about the

sea turtles and marine mammals in New York’s waters that the society strives to protect. Christopher Mayer from the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Environmental Resources spoke about shellfish restoration efforts. Sally Kellogg and Rachelle Neville, from the Long Island South Shore Estuary Reserve, discussed horseshoe crabs. Massapequa High School graduate Joseph Prusan, the valedictorian of the Class of 2016, participated in a video conference with students about his hydroponics research at UCLA. Students from Massapequa’s science research program who are have environmentalfocused projects shared their work at an information session in the lobby. Teacher Dr. Paul Hesleitner said that the students have been conducting extensive research to try to provide real solutions to

environmental issues. Seniors Sean Nuzio and Theodore Woodworth discussed their efforts to make dye-sensitized solar cells. The transparent solar panels would be put on windows without blocking a person’s view. The materials they are using for the prototype include conductive glass, a carbon steel frame, pomegranate juice, titanium oxide and silicon. Talia Cartafalsa, Gabrielle Marsico and Victoria Marsico are studying the occurrences of lung cancer on Long Island and New York State and making correlations to known toxic sites. Adriana Zanone is working on a way to generate power from walking, creating enough energy to recharge a cell phone. Teacher Michael LaBella and students from the high school’s Go Green class shared information about the third-year course, which is focused on sustainable living.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced today that the Parks Department is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in working at North Shore beaches this upcoming summer season. “We invite responsible and experienced lifeguards who are up to the challenge of protecting our residents while working at one of our beautiful beaches to apply now for this summer season,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Town lifeguards provide an invaluable service and have helped save countless

lives.” Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at Tappen Beach in Glen Head, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and at Centre Island Beach. “There are many benefits to working as a lifeguard at one of our beautiful beaches,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Having a summer job as a lifeguard helps shape confidence and selfesteem while learning the importance of teamwork

and building leadership skills!” Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Nassau County Grade 2 Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Berner Students Are Clued In To Ancient Greece

The mysteries of ancient Greece were solved by sixth graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District who relied on clues provided by their classmates. For a technologybased social studies project, each student in Kathryn Pullen’s class was assigned either a Greek mythical creature or location to make a video about. The caveat was that students could not reveal the subject of their videos, but instead

could only give hints. They worked with Ms. Pullen and technology learning coach Meredith Marin to create the short “Who am I?” and “What am I?” videos using Flipgrid. Students furthered their understanding of the research process by using only credible sources to find information. On Feb. 28, students participated in a digital scavenger hunt. They went around the room with their Chromebooks, scanned each QR code to bring up a video

about a mythical creature or location, and filled out a sheet with their guesses. As a guide, all of the answers were hidden inside of word art, designed to resemble the Parthenon of ancient Greece. The sixth grade social studies curriculum focuses on ancient civilizations. Phone Scam Attempts On The Rise With a recent uptick in the number of reported phone scam attempts, PSEG Long Island again urges residents and business owners to make themselves aware of the tactics scammers use to try to steal their money. Phone scammers have become more prolific and sophisticated in recent years. In many cases, the scammers can modify their caller ID to read “PSEG

Long Island.” More than 6,600 calls were reported to PSEG Long Island in 2019, up from 4,088 scam calls reported in 2018. While recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of scam calls, PSEG Long Island’s awareness campaigns appear to have made customers more alert. In 2015, 8.2% of the total number of reported calls resulted in customers losing their money. Since

2018, that number is down to 5%. “Phone scammers want their targets to panic so they don’t think clearly. If you receive a call about a past-due bill, don’t panic. Look for signs that it may not be legitimate, such as a request for a specific payment type or an imminent threat of disconnection,” said Rick Walden, vice president of customer operations,

PSEG Long Island. “Our representatives will never demand immediate payment and, though we offer a variety of payment options, they do not include pre-paid debit cards or bitcoin. Additionally, if a customer is scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment, they will receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days in advance.” What to look out for

You receive a call from what looks like PSEG Long Island on your caller ID. The caller threatens to shut off your service and demands an immediate payment by pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. The caller informs you that you require a new meter and demands a deposit before the installation can occur. You’re given a phone number to call back that,
