The student council at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has been busy the past few months with community service projects. Following a successful Thanksgiving food drive, the student

leadership group then collected winter accessories throughout December. Although it’s called the mitten tree, students and staff could give anything that will help people stay warm this

winter, including hats and scarves. They could hang donations on a festive tree in the main lobby, before student council members packed up the items to be delivered to the YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa.

In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. IRIS provides 24 hour access to members emergency information and contacts through their emergency hotline.

Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores. This app contains picture language and emojis, so ﬁrst responders can communicate easily with the individual. It also contains their 24hour emergency hotline information and the 5 Keys To De-Escalation. The Foundation is also planning restaurant fundraisers, in which Sarah Grace would be the featured charity on certain dates at local restaurants. Supporters would be notified of those dates to dine out at these restaurants and the Foundation would receive a percentage of the sales that night. The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is ending the year strong and has exciting plans for new and returning events when the calendar turns to 2022. The Hicksville-based organization continues to fulfill its mission of supporting children and their families during cancer treatment. The Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her courageous battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah enjoyed crafts, music and ballgames, and many of the Foundation’s initiatives aim to ignite that same spark in other children. Most recently, the Foundation held its annual Holiday Extravaganza raffle, which raised more than $4,000. The funds provided financial aid for holiday meals and gifts to struggling families. Ongoing toy drives have enabled the Foundation to send gifts to children at its core hospitals including Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. To mark Childhood Cancer Month in September, anyone who made a $10 donation to the Foundation received a gold ribbon pin or a gold ribbon magnet, or a $20 donation for both. The gold ribbon is the official symbol of children with cancer worldwide. This year, Sarah would have turned 31, so in the spring the Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race – the equivalent of 3.1 miles. The race drew more than 70 participants from across the country and generated approximately $4,800 to help support the Foundation’s initiatives. The event was so successful in its inaugural year that the Foundation is considering hosting two race events next year; An inperson 5K race in addition to another virtual race later in

They may be novice music makers, but students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have just as much enthusiasm as those who have been playing for decades. Orchestra teacher Katherine Cahalan has been working with fourth graders who are learning to play an instrument of their choice for the first time. She begins with the basics, such as showing them how to open the case, teaching them the different parts of the instrument and demonstrating the rest position. Students then pluck the strings with their fingers to hear the different sounds that each one makes. Finally, they advance to using the bow to play some simple notes and melodies.
