Fire Service Academy. ”We all know this has been a year like no other, which is why many of our residents are already decking the halls to make the holiday season as memorable as possible by installing extravagant decorations and more are choosing live trees over artificial trees than normal. We want the season to spark joy not fire, and that is why we are encouraging all residents to follow simple fire safety tips,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. County Executive Curran and firefighters shared tips on how to safely make your holidays ‘merry and bright’ by properly using seasonal and holiday candles, menorah candles, decorative lighting and electrical cords. County Executive Curran reminds residents of the following Holiday Fire Safety tips: • Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are ﬂame resistant or ﬂame retardant. • Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. • Never leave a lit candle, menorah or kinara unattended. • Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect. • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged. • Fresh trees are less likely to catch fire, so

On an average day in December, approximately 11,500 12-17 year olds drink alcohol for the first time compared to 5,000 to 8,000 new alcohol users during other months. In the Massapequas, most kids have their first drink of alcohol before the age of 14. In spite of what we think, we also know that parents are important inﬂuencers

when it comes to their children making the decision to have their first drink. There is so much parents can do to show they disapprove of underage drinking. Parents can speak with their children and send clear messages that underage drinking can affect their health and safety. They have the ability to teach their children about the law and help build their refusal skills by developing a plan and

discuss different ways to handle situations where youth may be inﬂuenced to drink. According to the 2020 WeddingWire Newlywed Report, more couples who were married in 2019 got engaged on Christmas Day than any other day during the year. Christmas Eve was the second most popular day to pop the question, while the Sunday before

Christmas Eve came in fourth (New Year’s Day rounded out the top three). The appeal of Christmastime proposals helped make December the most popular month to get engaged, as more than 19 percent of couples who married in 2019 got engaged in the final month of the year. July proved the second most popular month to

pop the question, as 9 percent of couples who wed in 2019 reported getting engaged in July. Tradition still has a place in wedding proposals, as 84 percent of proposers reported asking on bended knee, while 65 percent acknowledged asking parents’ permission prior to popping the question.
