2023 GIRLS SOCCER AAA COUNTY CHAMPIONS

The Massapequa Lady Chiefs also won the conference title going undefeated, giving up only three goals all season. They won 18 of the last 21 County Championships. After going undefeated and winning the county title, the Chiefs played Ward Melville in a rematch of the 2022 Long Island Championship. After a scoreless first half, Ward Melville scored two goals and defeated Massapequa 2-0. The Chiefs ended the season with a 14-1-4 record. Special honors go to Briana Neary and Riley Benito who were both chosen as First Team All-State. Neary also won Nassau County Player of the Year.

Imbroto Urges Residents To Give A Holiday Gift Of Life By Donating Blood On December 27th With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage this holiday season, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Wednesday, December 27th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Imbroto stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives this holiday season. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the holiday gift of life though a simple blood donation.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s

Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of

How do you get kids excited about multiplication? Just add some competition to the mix. That’s how third graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are memorizing their times tables. Students in Samantha Berna’s class have been welcoming their peers from other third grade classes for knockout math battles. Students compete one-on-one as a multiplication problem appears on the electronic display board. The child who calls out the correct answer first stays in the competition. It keeps going until one class is fully knocked out. The intra-hallway rivalry has continued as students have been expanding their number knowledge, recently learning multiplication tables up to 6. Ms. Berna uses digital flash cards through Ascend Math. She said that the competitions have encouraged students to practice multiplication facts on their own at home, so they are ready for a challenge their third grade peers.

With the holiday season in full swing, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is offering tips to help the millions of Americans caring for a loved one with dementia celebrate the holidays with their loved one in a dementiafriendly manner. “People with dementia can still, and should be encouraged to, enjoy and participate in the spirit of the holiday season. Because of the way dementia-related illnesses impact the brain, they may not be able to do it exactly as they did prior to the onset of dementia,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “By being adaptable and sensitive to the person’s needs and wishes, caregivers can help create a joyous, dementia-friendly holiday season for their loved one with dementia.” AFA offers these dos and don’ts for creating a dementia-friendly holiday season: Do: Keep decorations simple. Decorating is part of the holiday season fun, however, too much stimulation may be challenging for someone with dementia. Keep decorations festive, but simple. Instead of elaborate decorations, choose a few favorite items. Phase in decorations over a period of days so that changes to the person’s environment are less confusing. Don’t: Overdecorate or use dangerous decorations. Too many flickering lights or noisy items could overwhelm someone living with dementia. Changes to the person’s environment might

cause disorientation, which may then lead to wandering. Be aware of safety issues: fragile decorations can shatter into sharp fragments and decorations that look like food or candy could be mistaken for edible treats, creating a choking or dental hazard. Do: Adapt past favorite traditions or create new and viable ones. Build on old traditions when appropriate, such as enjoying favorite music or movies, or looking at pictures of past holiday celebrations. Adapt past traditions as well; if the person always sent out holiday cards or baked holiday cookies and still wants to do so, do it together with them. If they can no longer shop for gifts for their loved ones, invite them to help with wrapping the gifts so that they feel involved. Start new traditions that center on activities and events the person enjoys and can do, such as touring neighborhood holiday lights; plan to do it together. Whenever possible, ask what traditions are important to your loved one—it keeps them engaged, and helps you prioritize and plan appropriately. Don’t: Dwell on past practices. Take a strengths-based and person-centered approach and incorporate what the person can do and what they choose to do now, rather than dwelling on what they used to do. Focus on those things that bring joy and let go of activities that seem too stressful. It is normal to feel some sadness about changes and losses, especially during a holiday. Acknowledge these feelings and then

move on to new ways to celebrate. Do: Create a safe and calm space. Create a space where your loved one can sit comfortably during a holiday gathering, and where guests can visit in small groups or oneto-one. To the greatest extent possible, maintain the person’s normal routine when scheduling visits or holiday gatherings; disruptions in routine can be difficult for someone living with dementia. Don’t: Neglect safety. Be very mindful of potential tripping hazards on the floor, such as wires for decorations, as dementia can cause changes in vision, depth perception, and gait. Securely hook Christmas trees to the wall to avoid falls and use menorahs or kinaras with electric candles to reduce fire hazards. Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common form of dementia, affects more than 6.2 million Americans. The number of people in the US with Alzheimer’s disease is expected to more than double by 2060, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Robert Zabbia President, Massapequa Chamber of Commerce December 2023, The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce has been very busy these past few months, with our successful and well-attended Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Fair this month, along with the success fo our annual Food and Toys for Tots collection drives, and the proud re-launch of Operation Safe Spot this past November.

Safe Spot is a way for our local businesses to let the community know that we are here to help when they are in need. The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce, with support from the Town of Oyster Bay and the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, is proud to re-launch the Safe Spot Campaign. With the help of Drug Free Long Island, we will provide training to businesses to aid residents in emergency situations and also connect them to lifesaving resources. All businesses will receive a Safe Spot sign indicating that they are go-to spots for residents seeking assistance in emergency situations. Each sign also displays a QR code linked to contact information for the Nassau County Police Department 7th Precinct and the Nassau County Crime Stoppers anonymous text line. The participating businesses will also receive a First Aid and Narcan kit with complimentary Narcan training courtesy of Drug Free Long Island. For November and December, we had 12 new members join the Chamber: • Long Island Igloos joined as a Platinum Member. Neil and Siobhan provide igloo enclosures for outdoor events and restaurants. They were in business pre-COVID, and are based in Massapequa • Vincent’s Pizzeria joined as a Platinum Member. Dana Durso is the owner. They are a very active member of the Massapequa community, and are located at the border of Massapequa at 47-8 Boundry Ave., Farmingdale • Nature Calls Portable Restrooms joined as a Platinum Member. They typically spend 20 to 25 minutes on patrol each morning before school starts. This fall, students from Mary Scheffler’s class are the Safety Patrol volunteers and enjoy being role models. As they walk the first floor every morning during arrival, Safety Patrol members at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District strive to give everyone a good start to their day. As much as their mission is safety, the fifth graders who don the neon green sashes are just as much about community building. Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said the goal is to create connections between the school’s oldest and youngest students. Safety Patrol members guide kindergartners and first graders to their classes, often holding hands and having friendly conversation along the way. “When our fifth graders move on, this is something that they’re going to remember doing,” Ms. Ferraro said, adding that this is the sixth year of Safety Patrol at McKenna. World Kindness Day on Nov. 13 was a chance to celebrate a message that is part of daily life at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students are reminded every day to not only be kind to each other in school, but to spread that kindness wherever they go. During recess, students rotated through different stations that were led by lunch recess aides and volunteers from the PTA’s

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee. The youngsters covered the blacktop in happy and kind messages and images using sidewalk chalk. They also took a kindness pledge by adding their names to one of the letters in “INCLUDE.” The large letters, signed by Birch Lane’s 670 students, will now hang in general purpose room along with last year’s signed letters spelling out “KIND.” Kindergarten and first

graders played a hot potato game with a beach ball. When the music stopped, the student holding it had to identify an act of kindness that was on the ball. For students in grades 2-5, they passed beach balls over their heads and down a line. When it reached the end, the last child had to run up and grab a card with scenario. Together, the group had to determine if it stated a kind or unkind act. Students and staff were

encouraged to wear shirts with messages of kindness. There was also a pair of assemblies by singer and songwriter Jared Campbell. His original songs promoted positive character-building messages. Mr. Campbell explained that his goal was to inspire students through music to be world changers, and that starts by working to make their school a better place through kindness. Birch Lane Principal

Stephen Aspetti and Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin noted that kindness is emphasized every day to set a positive tone in the school. When social and emotional learning is at the forefront, they explained, it creates an environment that fosters all other learning. “World Kindness Day serves as a reminder of the positive impact that kindness can have on individuals, communities
