Dr. Cynthia Paulis announces the opening of the 500 for 500 competition for all Massapequa High School seniors. The theme this year is “Why is it important for you to vote in any election.” The entries must be
Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) and Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo (Sayville), in coordination with The Emily Meyer Foundation, are holding a toy drive to bring holiday cheer to sick children in the hospital. From now until Monday, December 20, 2021, they will be collecting new, unwrapped toys at their district offices to be delivered to local hospitals. Emily Meyer, a local teen and founder of The Emily Meyer Foundation, was inspired to start a toy drive eleven years ago at the age of five after being hospitalized on Christmas and receiving a toy by a Child Life volunteer to help comfort her. She then decided to pay it forward and donate toys to a local hospital to bring smiles to ill children. Today, Emily has collected and donated over 12,000 toys to hospitalized children

Student-Artists Liven Up Massapequa Classroom The artistic talents of two Massapequa High School students have left a social studies classroom a little more colorful. Juniors Juliana Cole and
Lily DiBendetto recently competed a mural that celebrates the history of the United States and New York. Social studies teacher
Robert Vath reached out to art teacher Julie Thornton about adding a mural to his classroom. Juliana came up with the concept, which included
an American flag as well as a scene of the Brooklyn Bridge, One World Trade Center and other New York City skyscrapers at sunset. Then, she and Lily got to
work, painting it around the door inside the room They worked during their lunch periods and afterschool to complete the floor-toceiling masterpiece, which
spans more than 12 feet in length. Juliana is a student in the drawing and painting class, and Lily is taking computer art and design this year.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 27th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2022. The series will begin Sunday, January 9th at Heckscher State Park. Food Drive Fulfills Kindness Club’s Mission
The Kindness Club at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has a wide reach in its desire to spread goodwill. For Thanksgiving, the club hosted a food drive to benefit families throughout Long Island. Large bins were placed in the lobby during the week of Nov. 16-20, and each grade was assigned
different items to bring in to ensure that everyone would receive all the necessary components of a Thanksgiving meal. After school, Kindness Club members filled large paper bags with canned fruits and vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, mashed potatoes, pie filling, stuffing and more. Before the bags were filled, they were decorated
with pictures and Thanksgiving messages by students in Kim Kelly’s, Lauren Marocchi’s and Victoria Nemes’ classes. Heather Comparetto, Birch Lane’s occupational therapist, then delivered all of the food packages to Long Island Cares, which runs the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

To address food insecurity during the upcoming holiday season, NICE Bus (Nassau InterCounty Express) has donated more than $14,000 in food and cash to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization. At the conclusion of a two-week campaign prior to the Bethpage Annual Turkey Drive which supports Island Harvest, NICE delivered 10 pallets of canned and dried goods – more than 5,000 items which is the equivalent of 37 full shopping carts – donated by NICE employees as well as NICE Bus riders through collection boxes at its Garden City center and the Hempstead Transit Center. Additionally, $6,000 in cash was donated by NICE’s 850 employees and $1,000 worth of frozen

Labriola And Maier Urge Residents To Donate Blood To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Monday, December 20th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Labriola stated, “This holiday season, I am urging residents to give a little extra and donate blood that can save lives. Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this
blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Vicki Walsh cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone and internet scams this Holiday Season, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Whether on the phone or online, scammers often pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or
other well-known agency in an attempt to intimidate the recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone numbers can also be falsified to appear as a familiar number. times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls and websites that appear suspicious, especially those requesting money or personal information, even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” You can take these proactive steps to ensure you and your family aren’t scam victims: If you receive a call from a number you do not recognize, do not answer the phone. If you do, hang up the phone immediately. Don’t press numbers to speak to a live
operator or take your number off the list, as this just confirms your phone number. Ask your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers. Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. Don’t click on any suspicious links or attachments in emails and on websites.
