From December 1st through December 20th, residents are invited to donate toiletries, clothing, and gift cards at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), or the Bethpage Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage). “From hosting our annual Salute to Veterans Concert to the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, the Town of Oyster Bay is committed to honoring our Veterans,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I invite residents to join me in

Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certified”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism. Please read on for detailed information about their training opportunities available! Engaging with someone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult for people unless they have at least a baseline knowledge of the disorder. Everyday Interactions with the Autism Spectrum Population is a comprehensive course for anyone and everyone who is working, volunteering, attending school, shopping or just out and about in the community and need to help recognize behaviors associated with ASD and safely engage for the good of all involved. Autism FYI’s workshops provide professionals, parents and community members the information needed to significantly support people on the autism spectrum in school, at work and in the community. They created this training course, which is available in person or online to anyone. In this course, you will learn:

ASD • Major developmental differences of ASD vs. neurotypical persons • To identify e s c a l a t i n g behavior and how to best respond • Communication difﬁculties and how to overcome them • How does Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD effect the behavior of a person with ASD) • How to engage a person effectively and appropriately you suspect has ASD • How to help coach/mentor a person with ASD on your team and engage them more effectively • How to engage a person with ASD who comes into your store, bank, daycare, community program etc. • How people with ASD make wonderful employees and how to hire and integrate them as part of your team • De-escalation techniques and behaviors to avoid • Effective communication techniques to help keep their anxiety level down • Strategies to help them cope with any situation Their trainings also have someone with ASD attending for role playing scenarios and interaction. Upon completion of the course, you will be more conﬁdent in identifying ASD behaviors, understanding effective engagement and communication techniques, and successfully interacting with someone with ASD. Three Prominent News Broadcasters Step Up To Help Life’s WORC

Besides being wellknown news broadcasters, Geraldo Rivera, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity also have a deep respect for, and willingness to help Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services. The organization, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recently received $50,000 each from these prominent media professionals. According to Victoria Schneps-Yunis, it was Geraldo Rivera, who made the first contribution. It was Geraldo’s riveting investigative report in the early 1970s, which exposed the atrocities of Willowbrook State School, then the largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Victoria’s daughter was a resident there and she had long been fighting for better conditions. Geraldo’s report, which won him a Peabody Award, and Victoria’s fervent advocacy, ultimately led to Willowbrook’s closing. Victoria then founded Life’s WORC and opened its first group home in Little Neck, Queens 50 years ago. Geraldo has been

It was a visit by Geraldo, his wife Erica Levy, and Victoria to Bill O’Reilly’s home in Montauk where Bill learned more about Life’s WORC. Over lunch, Victoria and Geraldo shared the history of Life’s WORC and the amazing progress it has made over the past five decades. Talk turned to the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration, during which Victoria, Geraldo and Bill will all be honored. That led to Geraldo announcing his $50,000 donation, which Bill then matched. Sean Hannity, who had just hosted Geraldo and Erica at his East End Long Island home the previous night, made it a triumvirate and together, the “Three Musketeers” as Victoria fondly referred to them, helped create a new legacy fund for Life’s WORC. Victoria noted that the three broadcasters were all brought up on Long Island and they are supporting a cause in their own backyard adding that, “Life’s WORC is an organization that helps more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities and on the autism spectrum in warm, loving group homes and day programs supporting them and their families.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was

founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps Yunis, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

Receiver Pravato Reminds Residents To File For Property Tax Exemptions Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato recently announced that residents may apply for New York State property tax exemptions from now through January 3, 2022. Homeowners wishing to receive exemptions on their 2022-2023 School taxes and 2023 General taxes must file with the Nassau County Department of Assessment or New York State prior to the January 3rd deadline. “I want to make sure that every resident who is eligible, whether they’re a senior citizen, veteran, new homeowner, volunteer firefighter/EMT, person with a disability, or person renovating/ improving their home, get the opportunity to take advantage of the available exemptions,” Receiver Pravato stated. “There are many exemptions available to qualified residents and homeowners, so I urge those interested to contact my office for further assistance parsing through the matter.” Exemptions, resulting in property tax savings, are available to qualified residents for the following categories: • School Tax Relief Program (STAR)Residents may receive only one of the following: o STAR Credit- the STAR Program has been changed by New York State. New recipients, and current recipients whose annual income is between $250,000 and $500,000, will be issued a check directly from New York

State instead of receiving a school property tax exemption. The amount of the benefit will be the same. You cannot receive both the credit and the exemption. Register with New York State by telephone at (518) 4572036 or online at www.tax. ny.gov/pit/property/star/ default.htm. o Basic STAR Property Tax Exemptionthis program provides an exemption from school property taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences with an annual household income of less than $250,000. Current Basic Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home. o Enhanced STAR Property Tax Exemption/ Credit- this exemption is available to senior citizen homeowners who are 65 years of age or older during the year in which the exemption takes effect, and whose annual income does not exceed $92,000. Senior citizens whose annual income exceeds $92,000 will still be eligible for the Basic STAR Exemption/ Credit. Current Enhanced Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home. Recipients must enroll in the Income Verification Program. • Senior Citizen exemption provides a tax savings for individuals over the age of 65, whose income is less than $37,400. To participate and receive this

tax savings (between 5% and up to 50% reduction on certain county, town and school district property taxes) specific qualification criteria must be met. • V e t e r a n s Exemptions are for those individuals who rendered service to our country. The eligibility to receive this exemption and amount to be exempted depends upon the time, duration and type of service, along with other criteria. • Cold War Veterans Exemption is for veterans who served during the Cold War period. The Law also provides an additional exemption to disabled veterans. • Gold Star Parent Exemption is available for the parent of a child who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, as defined in NYS Real Property Tax Law. • Persons With Disabilities and Limited Incomes Partial Property Tax Exemption is available to eligible applicants who have a physical or mental impairment, not due to use of alcohol or illegal drug use, that substantially limits that person’s ability to engage in one or more major life activities. The requirements to qualify are based on the person’s disability, ownership, residency and occupancy status, and income. Persons with incomes less than $37,400 can qualify to receive an exemption from 5% to 50% of the assessed value.

• H o m e Improvement Tax Reductions Program for the Physically Disabled is granted to those persons who are physically disabled and meet certain criteria. It is equal to the amount of any increase in value of property attributable to improvements made for the purpose of facilitating and accommodating the use and accessibility of the property. • H o m e Improvements Exemption is an eight-year decreasing exemption on alterations, reconstructions or improvements that increase the assessed value of a one or two family home. In the first year, 100% of the assessed value of the improvement is exempt. In the second year, 87.5%, in the third year, 75% and so on. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program. • F i r s t - T i m e Home Buyers of Newly

Constructed Homes may apply for and receive a partial real property tax exemption. The maximum exemption is offered over five years, starting with a 50% exemption the first year and phasing to 10% in the fifth and final year. Homebuyers are subject to certain price and income limits set by the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA). • V o l u n t e e r Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Exemption is available to eligible firefighters and ambulance workers. Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Vicki Walsh cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone and internet scams this Holiday Season, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our

senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Whether on the phone or online, scammers often pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency in an attempt to intimidate the recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone numbers can also be falsified to appear as

a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and firstgeneration Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need, especially during

these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls and websites that appear suspicious, especially those requesting money or personal information, even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” You can take these
