Labriola: Hicksville Athletic Center Programs for Winter 2022 Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola invites residents to take part in Winter Athletic Programs for basketball, badminton, volleyball, pilates, yoga, and fitness classes beginning on January 2nd, 2022 at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. All athletic programs are co-ed and open to individuals 18 and over. “The Town’s renowned athletic programs at the Hicksville Athletic Center offer a great opportunity for residents to take to the courts, improve their skills and make new friends,” said Councilman Labriola. “These recreational activities are a great way to have fun and stay active, and are an affordable way to stay in shape while having a good time.” Basketball will be held on Thursdays from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, and Sundays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, beginning on January 2nd, 2022. The pilates program is 10 weeks long, and costs residents $60 and $70 for nonresidents. Fitness Classes will include Ballroom Dancing, Cardio Kickboxing, and Zumba. Ballroom dancing will be held on Saturdays, from 7:00 PM to 8:00PM beginning on January 8th, 2022. Cardio Kickboxing will be held on Thursdays, from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM beginning on January 6th, 2022. Young Bakers Give Back Massapequa High School’s aspiring culinary artists are also philanthropists, as students recently participated in the Bake For Good initiative. Students in the College Art of Baking, Cooking for Today and Food and Nutrition classes completed a service learning project by baking hundreds of dinner rolls, which are being donated to local food pantries. Materials were provided by the King Arthur Baking Company including flour and yeast. Every student also received a culinary

bench scraper and recipe books with ideas for bread, cinnamon rolls and pizza. Following the Bake for Good concept, each group baked two loaves of bread – one to keep and one to donate. Students prepared the dough on Nov. 16, and then shaped it the following day. Culinary Arts teacher Christina Sabbiondo said that the donation loaves were turned into rolls, which will be given to the food pantries at YES Community Counseling Center and St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. With nine culinary

arts classes taught by Ms. Sabbiondo and Courtney Puricelli, approximately 200 students participated in the initiative. They baked enough rolls to fill more than 40 bags. “It’s a win-win,” Ms. Sabbiondo said. “They get to learn about baking bread and also learn about giving back to their community.” Using the loaves of bread to keep, students celebrated their successful charitable endeavor with a French toast party at the end of the week.

www.autismfyi.org Autism FYI (AFYI) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a safe environment, employment opportunities and independence for those on the Autism Spectrum. They recently opened their first office in the New York area in Wantagh. They are honored and delighted to have this new office and team to serve the New York Autism community for years to come! Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certified”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism. Their organization envisions a nation that utilizes its resources to assure that all of those living on the Autism Spectrum have a promising and equitable future; they are both locally and globally committed.

and civic engagement of high school students. She conducted a survey of students from multiple high schools and then analyzed her data. Sarah said she learned that when teachers foster intellectual discussions and make strong connections between historical events and the present day, students are more likely to be active citizens. She is very active herself, serving as the Northeast regional technologist for a nonprofit organization aimed at gun violence prevention, and said her involvement is the result of having very engaging social studies teachers. “I loved discovering something that wasn’t known yet,” she said. “Research is so important because we can close that gap of knowledge. All the work that I was putting in over the year has paid off.” While projects are done independently, students do have guidance along the way. Teacher Dana Robbins served as her expert adviser

and Christopher Diehl provided mentorship for statistical analysis. Sarah earned every possible point on both her paper, which was scored by the College Board, and her oral defense, which was presented in front of a panel of Massapequa educators. Social Studies Curriculum Associate Dr. Brian Trapani, who oversees the AP Capstone program, said that the oral defense is extremely challenging because students not only have to prepare a strong presentation but they also have to answer follow-up questions from the panel. Beyond high school, Sarah hopes to continue to be involved in research and a said the AP Capstone program has prepared her well for the future. At Massapequa High School, she is president of the history club, secretary of mathletes and a member of the French, National and Tri-M Music honor societies.

BERNER PROGRAM BUILDS CHARACTER AND COMMUNITY - Berner Middle School hosted its Character Education Day on Nov. 18. Students heard from powerful guest speakers and participated in activities that fostered a positive school climate. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders attended Ryan’s Story, an anti-bullying presentation, with John Halligan. He spoke about his son, Ryan, who endured much bullying in his life and eventually committed suicide at 13. Students listened intently to his emotional story and message of acceptance. Retired Nassau County police officer Sharon Galvin met with seventh and eighth graders about internet safety and cyberbullying. She discussed the pros and cons of social media and told students about the digital footprint they create whenever they post

something online. In an upstander activity, students learned about the role that they can play to combat bullying. They made paper T-shirts with anti-bullying words and phrases along with kindness bumper stickers. There were also lessons related to this year’s “One School, One Book” initiative. All students are reading “Slacker” by Gordon Korman, and activities focuses on the book’s themes of grit, determination, community and teamwork. The last period featured debriefing sessions in which students could share their reflections on the day and all of the important messages that were imparted. “Character Education Day helps make everyone aware of the issues that are out there,” eighth grade Chiefs Challenge member Alyssa Payero said. “If you’re aware of a problem, you can help stop it if you encounter it.” The afternoon before Character Education

Day, students from Chief’s Challenge, the Builders Club and class officers hung notes with inspirational messages on more than 1,500 student lockers as well as classroom and office doors. The goal was to spread positivity and bring smiles to all students and staff. Principal Jason Esposito said that with the emotional toll that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on students in the past 20 months, Character Education Day was vital. He thanked Chiefs Challenge advisers Caroline Glynn and Juliette Happe, as well as all of their helpers, for their hard work to plan all of the activities. “Days like this, where we nurture the social and emotional well-being of our students, are more important than ever,” Mr. Esposito said. “We know that the positive impacts are going to be life lasting.”
