New Pickleball Court Completed At John Burns Park Additional Courts Being Installed Throughout Town

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola announced that a new pickleball court has been completed at John Burns Park in Massapequa. The court is the latest among several that have been constructed at various parks facilities throughout the Town, with even more courts coming soon. “The demand for pickleball courts

has increased in neighborhoods all over our Town as the sport has become a favorite among residents of all ages,” said Councilman Labriola. “Pickleball is a fun, social and healthy activity for the whole family and new playing surfaces are a welcome addition to the community.” Pickleball combines the elements of tennis,

badminton and ping pong, and has become a favorite in many communities. The game is played with a wooden paddle and lightweight plastic ball and can include two, three or four players. The dimensions and layout closely resemble a badminton court, which is considerably smaller than a tennis court.

NEW PICKLEBALL COURT COMPLETED - Residents enjoy the new pickleball court at John Burns Park in Massapequa.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announces that a special New York Islanders ‘Learn to Play’ Hockey Clinic is returning to the Town of Oyster for children ages 5 – 9. Part of The Future Islanders Program, this ‘Learn to Play’ clinic introduces the game of hockey to young children and serves as a transition program for first-time players interested in house leagues. “We are pleased to partner with the New York Islanders to offer this exciting clinic for children looking to learn the fundamentals of hockey in a fun environment,”

said Councilman Imbroto. “This Future Islanders program, taught by former players and coaching staff from the New York Islanders organization, includes hands-on training skills and all necessary equipment in the early stages of learning hockey.” Two sessions of the ‘Learn to Play’ clinic will be offered this winter. Residents can choose from a session at the SyossetWoodbury Ice Rink on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:40PM or the Marjorie Post Park Ice Rink in Massapequa on Wednesdays at 5:45PM. The Syosset-Woodbury program runs from December 5 - January

30, and the Massapequa program runs from December 6 - January 31. With a registration price of $295, students receive full hockey equipment, including jersey, stick, gloves, helmet, shoulder pads, pants, shin guards, equipment bag and much more. Sessions will include special appearances by Isles alumni Arron Asham and Radek Martinek. Registration is now open and space is limited. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces a Free Drive-in Holiday Experience, featuring free family entertainment for Town residents. The event will be offered December 6th – 10th at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. “The Town’s free Drivein Holiday Experience will feature festive lighting displays, a walk-thru holiday village featuring the Massapequa Chiefettes, special appearances by friends from Arendelle and the North Pole, and will

feature many children’s favorite snowman in Olaf’s Frozen Adventure,” said Supervisor Saladino. This event is open to Town residents only, with registration online at www.oysterbaytown.com/ holiday, Residents must create an account on the Town’s portal to register for the event and reserve a time slot on either December 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th. Only one time slot reservation per family is permitted. Residents who have previously created an account on the

Town’s portal do not need to create a new one. Children interested in mailing their letters to Santa can bring them to the Holiday Experience as well. Letters that include the child’s name and return address will receive a response letter from Santa Claus. PRAVATO HONORS MASSAPEQUA EAGLE SCOUTS - Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato recently honored Peter Knight and William Stebner for their amazing accomplishment of earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Community members gathered to participate in drug prevention activities with Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) in observance of Red Ribbon Week and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Drug Take Back Day. On Monday, October 23rd, MTAC partnered with Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) and Seaford Cinemas to offer a free showing of “Screenagers: Under the Influence,” a thought-

provoking film that explores the impact of the issues faced by our youth in regards to substance use, mental health, and social media. Offered to community members, parents, teachers, and youth in the Massapequa and Levittown areas, the film provided strategies that parents and schools can use to support young people as they navigate the presence of substances in our society and empower them to make healthy and informed decisions. This showing was in

observance of Red Ribbon Week - a yearly, national prevention campaign to lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth. This year’s theme was “Be Kind to Your Mind. Live Drug Free!” The local coalitions also supplemented the film’s messages with resources on talking with your child about substance use and the dangers of substances such as vapes, marijuana, alcohol, and fentanyl. YES

Community Counseling Center, Levittown and Massapequa’s licensed prevention and substance use treatment provider, was also represented to provide support to community members seeking additional services for issues regarding substance use and mental health. In addition, MTAC hosted their biannual Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, October 28th at Massapequa High School. The drug overdose epidemic in the U.S is a rising public

health concern, and the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day encourages the public to remove any unwanted or unnecessary medications from their homes as a way to prevent medication misuse. At this year’s event, 30 pounds of prescription medication were removed from Massapequa homes. MTAC encourages the community to continue to do its part by turning in their unneeded medications at our Drug Take Back events and any time throughout the year to the Nassau County

Police Departments 7th precinct for a secure dropoff location. Since 1997, MTAC has worked with many local, state and national partners to prevent youth substance use and promote a healthy Massapequa. In Massapequa, Flowers At Fairﬁeld Give Global Insight Fourth graders explored a holiday celebrated in Mexico and other Spanishspeaking countries as part of their FLES instruction at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students learned about Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead – and made a craft associated with the holiday that allows people to honor departed family members. Teacher Julianne Loney introduced Day of the Dead, which is typically

celebrated in late October and early November. She talked about its history and purpose, and explained that flowers are an important element of the holiday, specifically the marigold. Under Ms. Loney’s guidance, students made marigolds out of orange tissue paper and pipe cleaners. They learned the symbolism of the goldencolored flower, which people often scatter or use to make arches to lead the souls of the deceased to

As part of Massapequa’s Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program, students in grades 3-5 get Spanish instruction twice a week, preparing them for middle school where they can select a language to study. In 2021, an estimated 1,160 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments on Thanksgiving Day, reflecting a 297 percent increase over the daily average. “Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday with multiple dishes cooking and baking at the same time, along with lots of guests, entertaining, and other distractions that can make it easy to lose sight of what’s on the stove or in the oven,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “With all these factors at play, it’s not surprising that the number of cooking fires spikes so dramatically.” Overall, cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires and injuries, and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths. Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. “Keeping a close eye on what’s cooking and minimizing the likelihood of getting distracted are key steps people can take to ensure a festive, fire-free holiday,” said Carli. Following are additional tips and recommendations from NFPA to help cook safely on Thanksgiving: Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need continuous attention.

When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly. Make use of timers to keep track of cooking times, particularly for foods that require longer cook times. Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels at least three feet away from the cooking area. Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that can come in contact with a heat source. Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If a small grease fire starts, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan, then turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Hot foods and liquids should be placed away from table and counter edges. In addition, NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers that use cooking oil, which can cause devastating burns. For a safe alternative, NFPA recommends purchasing a fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant or buying a fryer that does not use oil.
