The event has become an annual tradition, with hundreds of runners participating in the 5K and Youth Fun Run. There will be bountiful refreshments, prizes and raffles at the finish line. Fairﬁeld Halloween Parade Rain didn’t stop the • annual Halloween parade at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Oct. 31. Students in kindergarten through third grade marched through the school as fourth and fifth graders, also in costume, lined the halls to cheer them on.

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

NUFACEGLOW NOW OPEN IN SEAFORD! - The Seaford Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of NuFaceGlow, located at 3862A Sunrise Hwy, Seaford. On hand for the occasion were owners Anna and Ralph Glowacki, County legislator Steven Rhoads, Chamber President Kenneth Jacobsen.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. Students Make Their Case Berner Middle School students gathered in the library to deliberate if their peers were guilty of being a bully or a bystander, part of an exercise to foster a positive school climate. All seventh graders in the Massapequa School District took part in the mock court cases during the last two weeks of October. The BRAVE program — Bullying Reduction and Violence Education — includes a three-day workshop for seventh graders each fall during their health classes. At the first meeting, students

receive information about bullying and harassment, are introduced to the Dignity for All Students Act and learn strategies to stop bullying. The second day features a skit, in which students participate in a mock court case based on a cyberbullying scenario. Students were assigned different roles including judge, attorneys and jurors. For the final session, they discuss the court case, determine if any of the “defendants” are guilty and, if so, what the consequences should be. “They decide as a group, so there’s some really

good conversation,” social worker Marisa Boulukos said. “The objective is to raise awareness of the effects of bullying on school climate, and help students realize how much power they have to positively impact the social climate of the building.” Ms. Boulukos added that the BRAVE program PACK 776 VISITS SAGAMORE HILL - Massapequa Pack 776’s Den 1 outing to supports the district’s Sagamore Hill. magazine, a member of the Spanish Club and the Art, Spanish and National honor societies. She has also been a student assistant in the Summer Fine Arts program, and this past year supported young artists in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking classes. Although she is considering majoring in information systems or applied mathematics in college, Alexa said that art and literature are among her passions and it’s the study of those areas that have been her favorite high school classes. Talia, as begins to explore her college options, said she is planning to study either earth science or environmental science. She explained that she has enjoyed the challenge of her high school science classes and learning more about the world around her.

Little did they know that they would lead similar academic paths en route to becoming the top ranked graduates of Massapequa High School’s Class of 2020. Talia, with a grade point average of 100.125, was named the valedictorian while Alexa’s 99.8 GPA earned her the distinction of salutatorian. “I’m grateful,” Talia said, “and I’m proud that it’s the two of us because we’ve been friends since 7th grade.” Talia got her start on the north end of the Massapequa at Lockhart Elementary School while Alexa attended Birch Lane Elementary School, the district’s southernmost building.
