Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town’s massive ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 4th from 9am to 2pm (rain date is Sunday, December 5th). In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the Town is collecting toys to help families impacted by the COVID-19 economic crisis and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the ‘CruiseThru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14th. Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year we
smashed the previous year’s record in our toy drive collection. I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.” The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature an appearance by Santa Claus, and a drop box where kids can drop their letters to Santa off at. Letters dropped off with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. “Toys for Tots sends a message of hope to less fortunate children who
otherwise wouldn’t be receiving presents this holiday season. November is National Adoption Awareness Month State). The average age of those children is eight years and there are slightly more boys in foster care than girls. While approximately half of them will ultimately be returned to one or both of their parents or to a caregiver, another twentyfive percent find adoptive homes, typically with their foster parents. At any given point in time, however, an additional one-hundred-and-twenty-thousand foster children are in situations where they cannot be returned to their families and are therefore awaiting adoption. Again, statistics vary somewhat, but it’s agreed that the longer a child remains in care awaiting adoption, the less “attractive” they become to potential parents. While the average time for a child to be in foster care is somewhat over one year, it’s estimated that as many as sixty percent of these children remain in foster care from two to five years and that twenty percent may remain in foster care for more than five years. Roughly twenty thousand of them, depending on the state in which they’re being cared for, “age out” of foster care, having reached the age of eighteen or twenty-one years without having been adopted.

Originating in 1976 when then Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, declared the first week of November Adoption Week in the state, it was then formally recognized in 1984 when President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation declaring it National Adoption Week. To further increase adoption awareness, in 1995 President Bill Clinton expanded the week to the full month of November, and beginning in 2000, the Saturday before Thanksgiving was declared National Adoption Day. Today, it’s estimated that seven million Americans are adoptees and that one hundred million have direct experience with adoption in their immediate family either having adopted or placed a child for adoption or being an adoptee themselves. While the purpose of National Adoption Month and National Adoption Day is to draw attention to the importance of all adoption-related issues, 2021’s focus is on the critical issues surrounding the adoption of children in foster care. Numbers vary by source, but it’s generally agreed that there are over 400,000 children currently in foster care in the United States (as of 2019, 16,000 of them were in New York

Berner Middle School’s Theatre Box Players will stage its first show in two years with the upcoming production of “Descendants.” The musical is based upon the 2015 Disney fantasyadventure comedy film. The lead student-actors are Ioanna Livanis as Mal, Jett Cardona as Jay, Joey Muchnick as Carlos, Juliana Ansaldi as Evie and
Andrew McKeever as Ben. There is a total cast of 65 sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Popular songs from the show include “Rotten to the Core,” “Ways to be Wicked” and “Evil Like Me.” The musical is directed by Katie Tauches with support from vocal director Christina Guando, choreographer Danielle Coutieri and production
assistant Andrea Gropf. Show times are Friday, Nov. 19 and Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Berner Middle School auditorium. Tickets are $10 each. The Charity of the Month for November is
Project 9 Line www.project9line.org Project 9 Line is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue, an Army combat veteran. Their focus is to bridge T the communication JEC gap between PRO veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art. Studies show that Long Island has the second largest population of Veterans in the United States, second only to San Diego, California; Suffolk County has approximately 85,000 veterans and Nassau County has approximately 75,000 veterans. Also, statistics show that twenty two veterans decide to take their own life every day. Many of our veterans return home from performing the ultimate duty of serving our country only to face hardship, depression and substance abuse. Through their extensive resources and hands on team, Project 9 Line wants to maximize the potential of each and every veteran. This non-profit offers veterans various weekly classes. Whether a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for them! Each class is held at their headquarters at 25 Union Ave, Islip, NY 11751. A group of 10 ninth graders visited the Island Harvest distribution center in Melville on Nov. 1, the club’s first field trip since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Helping Hands members spent three hours at the facility, learning about Island Harvest’s hunger relief efforts and volunteering their time to put together food packages for needy families. NMFD Hosts 47th Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade
Members of the North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) hosted their 47th Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade on Halloween, much to the delight of residents. “The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special, but this year has added meaning because the pandemic forced us to cancel the festivities last year,” explained Chief of Department James M. Maroldo. “For the past 47 years, we have hosted this outstanding event and it has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people.” The Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade is typically held on the Sunday prior to Halloween. But, this year’s event fell on Halloween, which provided some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It was great day for the children,” Chief Maroldo said. “They got to wear their costumes at the parade prior to Trick or Treating and later saw Santa Claus himself riding on top of the Department’s Ladder Truck!” Youngsters also had a chance to win a bicycle or other great
raffle prizes and enjoyed hot dogs and orange drinks served by the first responders. Chief Maroldo said the parade is extremely popular because it brings everyone together in celebration. “We are a tight knit community and this event personifies the special bonds we all share as North Massapequa residents,” Chief Maroldo said. “Our department members are extremely proud of this event and I know our community is looking forward to many more years of the RagA-Muffin parade. The Chief thanked all who participated, both parents and children alike, and also acknowledged the event’s sponsors and the support of the Plainedge High School Band, which led the procession and played brilliantly. “The Plainedge Band is amazing,” Chief Maroldo. “They are such an important part of the Rag-A-Muffin Parade and help make this day special. It takes an entire community to make an event like this successful and it is truly an honor to host the Rag-A-Muffin Parade on behalf of North Massapequa.”

ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
