Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is n e e d e d , sponsor programs that p r o m o t e self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@ licares.org for more information. Additionally, they are holding their annual Adopt-a-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive! This project involves others to volunteer their time to gather and bag items for families in need so they can have a filling Thanksgiving. This is the perfect opportunity for families, groups and students to get involved in their community. Long Island Cares has a goal of reaching
5,000 families and they need your help to reach that goal! They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Toys For Tots Collection Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone joined with Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand to announce the kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” Collection Drive, which will run through December 12th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the Toys for Tots Drive follows a mission to help ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness,”
Councilman Hand said. “By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributor’s will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,” Councilman Macagnone said. For those who wish to donate to “Toys for Tots”, collection boxes can be found in the following Town facilities: • Oyster Bay Town Hall North (54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay); • Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa);
• Department of Public Works Facility (150 Miller Place, Syosset); • The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (at Bethpage Community Park 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage); and • Syosset-Woodbury Community Park Community Center (Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury). Ninth graders donated non-perishable items including canned vegetables, coffee, cookies, gravy and juice, and also could make contributions toward gift cards for turkeys.
