Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars.

Former Board of Education President Timothy Taylor served as grand marshal and led the parade. Prior to the game, cheerleaders, Chiefettes and football players from the Class of 2020 presented flowers to their parents during a special ceremony. Community members filled the bleachers and bought snacks, baked goods and Massapequa merchandise from different school organizations. The crowd roared as the Chiefs ran onto the field. Senior vocal soloist Sarah Benedict performed the National Anthem which was signed by students from Massapequa High School’s American Sign Language program. The

“Let Grow” projects are a staple in Katelyn Mulvey’s third grade class at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which help students become more independent and achieve personal growth. For a recent assignment, students had to think of tasks they were ready to do on their own, without the help of an adult. Ideas included climbing a tree, opening a lemonade stand,
going fishing, mailing a letter and making breakfast using the toaster. Children wrote down their ideas on pieces of green paper and added these leaves to their “Let Grow” tree outside of the classroom. Some students even included photos of themselves doing their independent activity. “One way that children acquire the resilience and self-control they need to succeed is by doing
some things on their own,” she said. “Students went home, talked to their parents about doing something on their own and that they felt ready to do, and were exhilarated after completing their project.” Ms. Mulvey added that the students will do one “Let Grow” project per month and continue to add leaves to the tree throughout the school year.
