Model Train Show to Benefit Oyster Bay Railroad Museum
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that Trainville Hobby Depot will host a Model Train Show on Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The Model Train Show includes operating model layouts
coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot. Donations are being accepted at the exhibit to support the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. “We are pleased to partner with Trainville Hobby Depot, who coordinates or participates in many hobby shows that benefit the fundraising efforts of a sponsoring organization,” said Councilman Labriola. “Assisting groups that not only bring a fun and

With a large number of new adoptions taking place over the past year, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca invites residents who have not done so already to utilize the Town Clerk’s Office to properly license their dog. In the Town of Oyster Bay, once a
dog reaches four months of age, the owner is required by Town Code to obtain a dog license and verification tag. Licenses are valid for one year. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “With the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been reports
of large increases in the adoption rates of pets for companionship, especially dogs. If you have recently adopted a dog, now is the time to license it to ensure its safety and identification in case it gets lost! Each year, hundreds of beloved family dogs are lost because

Licenses are non-transferable and in the event of a change in ownership of any dog, all licenses must be updated within 10 days of such change. Licensed dogs must wear an identification tag, affixed to its collar, provided by the Town Clerks office at the time of licensing. To obtain an application for a dog license, please visit the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay or Town Hall South in Massapequa, or at the Town’s Animal Shelter, located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The license fee is $15 for an unneutered or unsprayed dog and $10 for a neutered or spayed dog. Fees for senior citizens are

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Town will honor veterans and active duty military personnel for their service to our nation with a free round of golf at the Hon. Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, located at 1 South Woods Road in Woodbury on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11th. “The brave men and
these animals do not have identification tags and cannot be identified and returned to their owners. A dog license allows everyone to know your dog has a home, and also signals that your dog is up-to-date on its rabies shot. To put it simply: if you love your dog, license it! This simple act can only serve to protect our furry friends.” Dog licenses are issued to dogs four months of age or older for a 12 month period. The license must be renewed annually, and in order to license your dog, dog owners must provide the following minimum information: Name, residence address and phone number of owner Name, sex, approximate age, breed, color, markings and other identifying details of the dog Provide certification of spaying or neutering

Clubs Reinvigorate Student Life Ninth period ends just before 3 p.m. on weekdays at Berner Middle School but that final bell does not signal the end of the day for many students. Extracurricular activities are back in person this year, after meeting virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterschool clubs are an important part of student life at any middle school, and Massapequa’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders have more than two dozen options. They can explore art, technology and world languages, get involved in student government and community service, and focus on their mental and physical health. Chiefs Challenge brings together students who are motivated to improve school culture. They work on promoting major schoolwide events such as Think Pink Day in October and Character Education Day in November. Advisers
Caroline Glynn and Juliette Happe said that they are thrilled to be back in person because Chiefs Challenge meetings involve hands-on activities. At the most recent meeting, students made pink and white banners and assembled ribbon pins for Berner’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiative. The Mural Club also is constantly engaged in hands-on projects. To begin the year, artists worked on a mural for this year’s One School, One Book initiative. All Berner students are reading and discussing “Slacker” by Gordon Korman. Each student in the Mural Club painted a colorcoded square using window paint, which will then be transferred to the glass block windows. Students then committed to selfimprovement by filling a bulletin board with sticky notes, identifying personality traits that they would like to change. They expressed a desire to be
more cheerful and upbeat, be more organized, procrastinate less and show more concern for others.

About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively,

Town Adding New Pickleball Courts
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town is adding three new pickleball courts as the sport continues to gain popularity through the Town. The courts will be located at H. Garrick Williams Park in Massapequa, located on Ritter Avenue in Massapequa. “Pickleball continues to be a growing sport in our communities and these courts will provide an even greater opportunity for
fans to participate,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These three new courts will add yet another great venue for our residents to enjoy all the fun this sport has to offer.” Pickleball is a fun sport for all ages, played with a wooden paddle and lightweight plastic ball. The sport combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong and can include two, three or four players. It shares similarities to other racquet sports. The dimensions and layout closely resemble a badminton court, which is
considerably smaller than a tennis court and rules of the game are somewhat similar to tennis. ‘This fun and social sport provides a great healthy activity for the whole family,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Following the great success of three new courts we recently installed in Bethpage, we’re sure that these new courts in Massapequa will be a welcome addition to the community.”

‘You Call The Shots’ - United Way Of Long Island Receives Grant From CDC Foundation United Way of Long Island is being funded to support effective community outreach centered on communities of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in order to share accurate, culturally appropriate information about the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines as well as link adults to vaccine services. United Way, with funding through the CDC Foundation, will work to increase local COVID-19 vaccination rates through the initiative You Call the Shots— Protecting Communities, Empowering Families and Stopping Myths. United Way’s program addresses the inequities in vaccination coverage that exist across different racial and ethnic populations on Long Island by improving access and raising knowledge through educational campaigns to decrease hesitancy and overcome refusal to vaccinate. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 374,000 cases and 6,452 deaths, and residents continue to suffer the consequences: severe illness, job loss, decrease in income, unstable housing, separation and isolation. These numbers,
in combination with vaccine data, illustrate the critical need for increased vaccine coverage. Compared to the overall Long Island population, vaccination rates differ greatly among African Americans and Latinos: 6.4% of African Americans and 12.6% of Latinos have received at least one dose. The CDC Foundation helps the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) save and improve lives by unleashing the power of collaboration between CDC, philanthropies, corporations, organizations and individuals to protect the health, safety and security of America and the world. Since January 2020, the CDC Foundation through the support of its donors has addressed a wide variety of critical needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work includes providing personal protective equipment for frontline responders; care kits for schools, jails and the unhoused; studies examining the impact of COVID-19; work to strengthen communities and community-based organizations to improve vaccination uptake and address misinformation; projects focused on health more than 100 projects focused on health equity; and
much more. United Way of Long Island’s You Call the Shots will focus its work in six communities designated by New York State as high priority for increasing vaccination rates: Elmont, Hempstead, Freeport, Huntington Station, Brentwood and Bay Shore. The organization will utliize its existing partnerships with corporate entities, government, labor, community leaders, school systems, health providers and over 100 funded communitybased agencies to increase vaccine confidence and uptake through: Bilingual community navigators who will connect Long Islanders to vaccination sites and providers. They will visit and speak with residents about the importance and safety of vaccines, while providing information on vaccination sites and availability. Navigators will work with state and local health departments to ensure pop-up clinics are located in areas where and when needed, as well as schedule appointments, arrange transportation when necessary, and provide facts about COVID-19 and the vaccine in multiple languages. Leveraging trusted
community-level spokespersons to provide consistent, factual and compelling science-based messages in support of vaccination. Spokespersons will be trained on COVID-19 facts and equipped with compelling scientific information to engage with residents and diseminate information through local media outlets, social media, faith-based venues, community events and other community-based, culturally appropriate venues. Building trust with
community members to address the concerns people have about COVID-19. To increase confidence in and encourage vaccination, United Way of Long Island spokespersons and health care partners will help combat misinformation, stop myths and build public trust through community outreach and education forums. Funding for this effort is made possible through a subaward from the CDC Foundation and is part of the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) financial assistance award totaling $25,660,048 with 100 percent funding from CDC/HHS.
