TOWN BOARD HONORS MASSAPEQUA PARK COUPLE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board honored Massapequa Park resident Antonina Barry and her boyfriend Daniel Shea for their lifesaving actions to prevent a deadly house fire. While setting up for a backyard graduation party, they noticed their neighbors’ house was on fire and raced next door to alert them. Thanks to the couple’s quick response, their neighbors were able to safely evacuate before a backyard propane tank exploded and sent a fireball into the home. The blaze it caused was so enormous that it required firefighters from more than ten departments across Long Island. Presenting them with official Town citations, Supervisor Saladino publicly commended and thanked Antonina and Daniel for demonstrating an ability to act courageously when fellow citizens are in need.

LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more. The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! Residents and parents can help prevent prescription drug misuse by turning in unused or expired medication for safe disposal at Massapequa Takes Action Coalition’s (MTAC) Fall Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 23rd from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Massapequa High School East Driveway - District Office Parking Lot. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2019, nearly 71,000 people died from drug overdoses, making it a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. Of

those deaths, over 70% involved a prescription or illicit opioid. Drug overdose deaths continue to increase in the United States as well as in Nassau County where non-fatal overdoses increased significantly from January 2020 through January 2021 but fatal overdose increase was minimal. Instructions for drug take back: keep all medications in original containers; block out name for anonymity - do not cross out medication information. Please remember: NO thermometers, IV Bags; NO Chemo Drugs; and

NO Liquids of any type. SYRINGES & SHARPS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Unable to attend? NMFD Honors Three Members With Fifty Years In The Fire Service community service. He has been involved in all levels of the fire service and, in addition to his service as Company Captain and Chief of Department, served as President of the Association of Fire Districts of New York State and also as Chairman of the Nassau County Fire Commission. George is a member of Hose & Engine Company 2 who served as Company Captain before being elected to serve as a Commissioner of the North Massapequa Fire District, where administrative skills enabled him to skillfully balance the needs of the fire department and the taxpayers of the district. George has been active in many other diverse capacities within the department. Gary is a

member of Friendship Engine Company 3 and ably served as his company’s captain. Supervisor Venditto was very supportive of the Chamber for many years, and we are trying to show our appreciation by memorializing him in some way. Stay tuned for the committee’s recommendation and enactment of their decision.

Past President Patty Orzano will be starting the Food Drive and Toy Drive for Toys for Tots, along with assistance from Past President Phyllis Doria and our Board. We appreciate your support of these programs. I have also appointed Second Vice President Karen Gawrych as our new Scholarship Committee Chairperson for the springtime awards that we give to local senior students. The awards will be $250 each as last year, and our local high schools and members are the benefactors of this fine program. Lastly, a reminder that Chamber dues renewal notices will go out in November. The dues will be $130 annually and $200 if you want to add the website advertisement that we offer for the additional $70. Please remit as soon as possible when you receive the invoice in the mail. I look forward to seeing all at the next meeting.

Town’s Zombie Home Registry Now Live

Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced the launch of a new online initiative that allows residents to report abandoned/zombie properties within their neighborhood located in the unincorporated areas of the Town of Oyster Bay. This new Abandoned Property/Zombie Home Registry assists the Town of Oyster Bay in combatting eyesores in local communities. “Protecting our suburban quality of life is a top priority for the Town Board,” said Councilman Imbroto, who serves as Chairman of the Town’s Quality of Life Taskforce. “No community should be forced to deal with unmaintained and dangerous eyesores that serve as havens for squatters, rodents and other such problems. The Abandoned Property/ Zombie Home Registry will help us continue to make headway with cleaning

up these eyesores, and we encourage residents to serve as our eyes and ears by using this reporting system to help.” Zombie homes are properties that have been vacant for an extended period of time and are often owned by a bank, trust, or mortgage company. Code Enforcement Bureau from the Department of Planning of Development continually monitor vacant properties, issue Notices of Violation against neglected properties, and take action to cleanup properties. With help from the public, the Town can better identify every existing eyesore within communities. Once a property has been identified as abandoned or an eyesore, Code Enforcement Officers inspect the property to assess the property. The Town explores all possible avenues to spur the owner to rehabilitate the property. Once all options have been exhausted, the Town will

seek legal remedies to demolish eyesore in the community. “The objective of the Town’s Zombie Home Program is to ensure the Town of Oyster Bay continues to be a highly desirable community to live, work and raise a family,” added Supervisor Saladino said. “This new, online registry will help our Department of Planning and Development enhance their tracking of eyesores. Ultimately, if the property owner cannot keep it maintained, the goal of this initiative is to make way for new families and new homes after tearing down these zombie homes.” The Town’s Abandoned Property/Zombie Home Registry was established under a grant provided through the New York State Housing Stabilization Fund. Speaker Plants The Seeds Of Kindness At McKenna

Kindness isn’t just an action, it’s a superpower. That was the message to students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, who attended the Cultivate Kindness assembly on Sept. 22, presented by the ReesSpecht Life Foundation. Presenter Rich Specht told students in third, fourth and fifth grade a story about his family and how they were the recipient of an incredible

act of kindness. In response, he, his wife and his children went on a mission to “pay it forward” with at least 500 random acts of kindness. He shared how small gestures can make a big difference and reminded students that their kindness can change the world. In his presentation for grades K-2, Mr. Specht shared his book, “A Little Rees Specht Cultivates Kindness,” about a young boy who discovers how kindness is like a seed

and it can grow through good deeds. The book was written in honor of his 22-month-old son. The assembly was presented in partnership with the McKenna PTA. Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry and Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said the goal of the assembly was to set a positive tone at the beginning of the school year and watch kindness spread throughout McKenna.

Conversation And Camaraderie Good communication is important for success in all aspects of life, and fourth graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently participated in an activity to develop those skills. Teacher Danielle Polo shared several tips with students on how to hold meaningful conversations.

They learned that good listeners and good speakers make eye contact, ask questions politely and don’t interrupt each other. To put their knowledge into practice, students went outside and had to complete their “Find someone who…” checklists. With clipboards and pencils in hand, they went around to their

friends and asked questions to find out who likes butter on their popcorn, who went swimming this summer, who has gone ice skating and who enjoys video games, among other facts. This allowed the classmates to get to know each other while developing their conversational skills.
