The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can benefit Melissa’s Wish in various ways. Of course you can attend one of this year’s Haunted House events (all proceeds will benefit this organization), you can donate on their website or you can become a sponsor of their

organization. Additionally, you can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had! Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces. Donations will be accepted through November 15th, and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes to send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe. Help support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces by donating DVDs.” “Big Hy for Heroes” was started in 2002 by

Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, “Big Hy for Heroes” has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today. Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Teachers Guide The Way Personalized reading instruction is a staple of the Massapequa School District’s early literacy program, where teachers throughout the elementary level use the guided reading approach to help students improve their fluency and comprehension skills. Working with small groups, teachers can identify each student’s strengths and weaknesses and target individual needs. Groups are formed based on reading levels, and students will read the same book together as the teacher asks questions about character development, conflict, plot and more. Birch Lane Elementary School fourth grade teacher Colleen McCree said that the goal of guided reading is to help students progress to the next level. During a small group lesson, Ms. McCree will have each child read a passage of the book to her, which helps her analyze their reading fluency. With her follow-up questions, she can determine how well they are comprehending

the different elements of a story. Recently, her students were reading realistic fiction books because she said the stories are relatable to the students. Ms. McCree asked her students to use inferencing to try and predict what would happen next in the story. McKenna Elementary School reading teacher Bridget Fielder visits second and fourth grade classrooms throughout the week to provide additional support, so she and the classroom teacher can each meet with a small group at the same time. One of her fourth grade groups in Amy Agovino’s class recently read “Charming Ella,” a fiction fantasy book that allowed them to make connections to well-known fairy tales. Ms. Fielder said she uses guided reading instruction as an opportunity to help students build their vocabulary. When they come across a word they don’t know, she teaches them to use context clues and pictures to determine

its meaning. “Guided reading provides more one-on-one time between student and teacher,” she said. “It gives them more individualized attention, to help move them to the next level.” Robert Sollazzo, a fifth grade teacher at East Lake Elementary School, said he looks for the “teachable moments” when working

with students individually. By just listening to a child read for a few minutes, he can find out a lot about his or her reading abilities, and what skills need to be further developed. Students keep sticky notes handy, so they can jot down their thoughts when reading a book, whether it is a question they have about a plot point or an

example of a story element that the teacher asked them to find. Mr. Sollazzo asked one of his groups to find idioms and then use clues from the story to determine the meaning. As small group instruction goes on, other students in the class read their independent books silently. Children learn to find their “just right” books

which match their reading level and are of a genre and a topic of interest. They can select their books from the classroom, school or public library, or bring one from home. The skills they learn in guided reading are used during independent time to successfully read and comprehend their personally selected books.
