Devin wants to attend a school in the Northeast with a strong pre-medicine program, as she aspires to become a neurologist. As a member of the Health Care Explorers club, she has had the opportunity to visit different medical facilities in the region. Brendan wants to turn his interest in math and problem solving into a career in computer programming or software engineering. He said is looking at colleges that have strong programs in those areas. To become finalists, Brendan and Devin must complete a detailed scholarship application with information about their academic record, participation in school activities and community service, leadership abilities, employment, and honors

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Lastly, if you would like to volunteer, you can! until the closure, distance learning assignments and artwork made on their own at home. Art teachers shared a Google survey with their students giving the young artists an opportunity to choose pieces they wanted to display. “We knew that the art students in the district

would not have their traditional art shows and we wanted them to have something special where they could show off their artwork,” Mr. Leone said. The online exhibition features 14 galleries – arranged by school at the elementary level, by grade at the middle school and by course at the high school.

Mr. Leone noted that there is a special section for the Advanced Placement Drawing and Painting students, who have dedicated their four years of high school to rigorous art courses. Mr. Leone added that the digital art gallery is a great way for all members of the community to view
