These appliances are particularly coveted in the cooler months when people spend more time indoors. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the ﬂue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday on the Jewish calendar. According to the Jewish National Fund, Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a celebration of the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. Adherents to the Jewish faith wish each other a good, sweet year ahead on Rosh Hashanah, a day that is steeped in tradition. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. Massapequa High School has been named a Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction for its high level of academic achievement among student-athletes. It was one of 56 schools in the state to receive this recognition from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Students are named scholar-athletes for

maintaining a grade point average of 90 or higher during a competitive athletic season. Scholarathlete team recognition is awarded when the team’s average GPA for 75% of the roster is at least a 90. To earn the School of Excellence Award, 100% of a school’s varsity teams must receive the ScholarAthlete team designation. For the 2019-20 school

year, schools were awarded based on the fall and winter seasons only. Ways to Make Your Yard a Safe Haven for Beautiful Birds

Here are some great ways to create a safe haven for beautiful ﬂying visitors. • Garden organically: Conventional pesticides can be toxic to birds, so ditch the dangerous chemicals. Did you know that there are essential oils that you can use instead that will do the job of warding off pests without harming birds -or people for that matter? Protecting birds is not only the right thing to do, but their health and safety helps ensure their ability to feed on the very pests you’re trying to eliminate.

• Make windows visible: Your beautiful view can be a safety hazard to birds. Each year, millions of wild birds are killed in the U.S. alone by striking windows. Fortunately, there’s an easy action you can take to prevent this from happening, and it is to apply decals that reﬂect ultraviolet sunlight to your home’s windows, particularly those windows that are highly reﬂective of open sky. Doing so has been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. 5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement

Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Inefficient or aging housing materials may compromise your ability to do just that. Drafts from doors, poorly protected attics and basements and aging windows may force heating systems to work extra hard to maintain interior temperatures. Replacing old windows can make a home quieter by blocking out exterior noises. Consumer Reports also notes that new windows are often easier to clean and maintain than older varieties. Many homeowners are interested in replacing their windows, but may not know where to start. These guidelines can help the process along. 1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.

When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: • How long will the project take? • Will I need to remain home during the process? • Do you discard of old debris? • What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather? 2. Research permits. Most home renovation projects need to be approved by the local municipality. Go to the permit office and find out the requirements. Some window contractors will include securing permits in the cost of the project. After the project is completed, an inspector will come by and ensure the work was done according to code. 3. Change up the appearance. Look at the type of hardware you have around the home and other fixtures. Choose windows that have locks or latches that can match those features for continuity of style. Think about choosing a

different style or frame color of the window, or a different type of window to improve efficiency and function. 4. Research top window manufacturers. It’s tempting to purchase windows based on price alone, but replacement windows are often a decision that only has to be made once or twice for the life of the home. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions. 5. Prepare for installation. Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Plan for one to two days of installation, advises Andersen Windows and Doors. Keep pets and children away from work areas. Replacement windows can be a smart investment. New windows can improve the look of a home, reduce heating costs and can keep interior spaces comfortable.

Obituary Jeremiah F. Anglim, longtime resident of Amityville, died September 2, 2020 at the home of his son in Massapequa. He was 88 years old. Jerry was born January 13, 1932 in Brooklyn to Francis Aloysius and Anne Elizabeth (Mehegan) Anglim. Mr. Anglim joined the United States Marine Corps in February 1952, later transferring to Reserves and subsequently retiring as a Captain. Jerry joined the ranks of the NY Police Department in 1956, served until 1977 when he retired. He was a 53 year member of the Massapequa Fire

Department, an excaptain of Engine Co. #4. He was predeceased by his wife Ann in June 2017 and also his sons Frank and Paul. Survivors include his children Kristine Cantrell, Celeste Kusmierski (Walter), Nancy Burnham (Joel), Peter Anglim (Diane); seventeen (17) grandchildren, twenty-one (21) great grandchildren and two (2) great great grandchildren, and a sister Francis Franzo. He was also predeceased by four (4) brothers and three (3) sisters. Deacon Rich Ferri conducted a prayer service on the evening of Tuesday,

September 8th. Father Gerard Gordon, pastor St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martin’s assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed with military honors in St. Charles Cemetery. Fire Dept. conducted Last Alarm and members of both the Fired Dept. and NYPD acted as escorts and honor guard. Donations in memory of Jerry may be made to St. Martin of Tours Parish Outreach. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

FORMER STUDENT NOW THE STEWARD - Barbara Lowell, a 1992 Massapequa High School graduate, officially took over as principal of her alma mater on July 1. Walking the halls every day in her new role is a thrill, but it’s the gymnasium the especially brings back fond memories for the former varsity basketball player. Ms. Lowell has worked in the district for 22 years, starting as a social studies teacher at Berner Middle School and most recently served as executive assistant to the principal at Berner.
