9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - On Thursday, September 9th, 2021, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran hosted Nassau County’s 20th Anniversary of 9/11 Remembrance and Recitation of Names Ceremony at Eisenhower Park. The ceremony included surviving family members reading the names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks, as well the unveiling of a new 9/11 Responders Monument. The 6,500-pound, red granite monument pays tribute to the first responders who lost their lives to illness years after joining the rescue and recovery operation at ground zero in the wake of the attack on September 11, 2001.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens fall activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your

On September 18, 2021, The Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation will host two unique events on Long Island to create awareness for Veteran Suicide Prevention. Leading fellow Marines, Veterans and friends, Chad Lennon, a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, will hike 22 miles carrying 22 pounds to represent the 22 Veterans who die by suicide each day. Lennon is asking Americans to join him in person or online virtually in memory of our service members who die every day from suicide. In addition to the walk, Long Island runners will join in unity by running a 5K at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, NY. Starting and finishing from the park entrance at 5789 Middle Country Road, the run will engage a new and unique audience to bring additional awareness to this important cause. Walk4Valor and Run4Life events are sponsored by the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation with support from Major Charles J. Sanders, NYARNG, Commander for Southold American Legion Post 803. Massapequa Names Two New Supervisors

The Massapequa School District welcomes two new administrators at the secondary level for the 2021-2022 school year. Daniel Mezzafonte is the supervisor of science for grades 6-12 and Jeff Cronk is the secondary special education supervisor for Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. Mr. Mezzafonte comes to Massapequa with 25 years of experience as a science teacher and administrator. He began his career at Richmond Hill High School in Queens before moving to Hewlett High School, where he taught science for eight years and coordinated the science research program. For the past 13 years, he was the science department chairman at Floral Park Memorial High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental science from Binghamton University, a master’s degree in microbiology from New York University and his administrative certification from Stony Brook University. Professional memberships include the School

Administrators Association of New York State and the Long Island STEM Education Leadership Association. In Massapequa he will oversee a “very talented team” of about 60 science teachers at the high school, Ames and Berner Middle School. He said his goals are to find even more opportunities for students to participate in science activities beyond the walls of Massapequa schools and to continue to grow the research program. “I’m very excited to be able to contribute my expertise in science to an already successful program,” he said. “I want to facilitate a love of science for our students and work with our teachers to help them succeed.” Mr. Cronk comes to Massapequa from the William Floyd School District, where he was a special education teacher and Committee on Special Education chairperson for 15 years. A secondgeneration educator, his mother was a teacher for three decades. He holds a bachelor’s degree in human relations

from St. Joseph’s College, a master’s degree in childhood and special education from C.W. Post and his administrative certification from the College of St. Rose, and is an active member of the Council of Administrators and Supervisors. In his new role, Mr. Cronk will supervise about 35 staff members at the high school and the Ames Campus, including teachers, teaching assistants, social workers and psychologists. One of his responsibilities will be to provide them with professional development opportunities. He will also work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers and pupil personnel services staff to ensure that students under his purview are receiving the proper level of support. Mr. Cronk said he is enthusiastic about working in a district that provides a wide range of resources for learners with special needs, noting that Massapequa is highly regarded for its Career and Community Connections program at the secondary level.

This food establishment will be a great addition to Massapequa. We wish the owner Chris well, and look forward to his enhancing the community. The Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce Businessperson of the Year Committee for our Chamber has met, and they have chosen Howard Ritzer and Massapequa Center Rehabilitation & Nursing for our honorees for the 2020 and 2021 awards. The Road to Victory: Armor Museum’s Rolls Out Its Armor Collection at Old Bethpage Village Restoration

The Museum of American Armor’s “The Road to Victory” program will be held on Saturday, September 18th and Sunday, September 19th inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, N.Y., featuring many of the operational military vehicles in the Armor Museum’s collection. An additional donation offers families a unique opportunity to ride inside a Half Track, Command Car, or troop transport. The gates to Old Bethpage Village Restoration will be

open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with last ticket sales at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $15.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors and children (5-12), under 5 is free. Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of

autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
