The former World Trade Center site was decimated by the attacks. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were part of the New York skyline for more than 40 years.
Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.

Principal Katie Fernandez greeted students and helped them find their classrooms. Fairfield fifth graders Kyle Scavone and Sara Kichnerman said they want to do well in all of their subjects this year, their last before middle school. Kyle said he is looking forward to the activities that are unique for fifth graders, such as the yearend bagel breakfast to sign each other’s yearbooks. Sara said that she wants to set a good example for the younger students in the school. At Berner Middle School, sixth graders had class for the first time together with their peers from across the district. Coming from six elementary schools, the students participated in many team-building activities. ELA co-teachers Amy Curry and Adrienne Parker spearheaded a chalk talk, in which students went around the room
and responded to certain prompts on the white boards, to get to know each other better. Some of the questions included “What is your favorite subject and why?” “What are you most excited about this year at Berner?” and “What was your favorite summer memory?” Sixth grade science teacher Matthew Cunha had students work in teams
to complete a STEAM challenge in which they had to make a pyramid out of red plastic cups without touching the cups with their hands. Brian Mulcahy had his science students build towers out of paper and tape, to prepare them for a year of hands-on experiments.

There were plenty of smiles on the faces of students as they reunited with their friends, met their new teachers and unpacked supplies from their brand new backpacks as Massapequa’s nine schools opened up for the first day of the 2019-20 school year on Sept. 5. Parents said goodbye at the front doors, but not before taking lots of pictures. At Lockhart Elementary School, new Principal Dr. Michael Yannucci greeted students for the first time and together they looked forward to the year ahead. He was joined by new Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione, a former teacher and technology learning coach in the district. The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered
it to the recipient right in his hometown! The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.
They are presently looking for wish applicants in the Long Island area. Marching Band Revives The ’80s something different,” said band co-director Andrew Dwork. “We haven’t done a rock show in 10 years. I think the students will really be into it and I think the audience will get involved.” Mr. Dwork and CoDirector Eva Marie Arnold were joined by elementary band teachers Gary Loock and Jessica Wyman, Berner Middle School band teacher Rob Giannotti, Ames Campus band director Michael Perticone and Color Guard director Andrea Gropf in helping students prepare for the show. The marching band consists of approximately 135 students in grades 10-12.
This year’s student drum majors are Sarah Benedict and Sean Buchanan, and the Color Guard captains are Colleen Giradin and Makayla Shanley. The three-day camp included marching formation drills on the football field, and music rehearsal in the school. Ms. Arnold said that rehearsals will continue once the school year begins, and the camp helps students get a head start on learning the music. There was also a little fun mixed in with a water balloon fight to close out one day, and a visit from a shaved ice truck another day.

A Spirited Summer Science Camp Scores of eager young scientists were engaged in a week of design and discovery at Camp Invention, hosted by the Massapequa School District at McKenna Elementary School. The program was open to students entering grades 1-6. Camp Invention, which is sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and is hosted at sites throughout the country each summer, inspires children to become innovators and problemsolvers while working collaboratively with their peers. At McKenna, students rotated through five stations. In Deep Sea Mystery, they excavated fossils, built a Polaris projector and created sea-worthy vessels. DoIt-Yourself Robot allowed students to take apart robots to see how they work, before building courses for their devices to traverse. In Farm Tech, students
had to create a farm that relies entirely on machines by building creations such as catapults to launch hay. They become superheroes in Innovation Force, making their own superhero capes. The focus of that workshop was on inventions, as children created grabbers to retrieve their ideas, which were stolen by a villain named the Plagiarizer. Camp Invention Games featured fun activities that had scientific elements. For one game, students made devices that could protect a water balloon, and then dropped their contraptions about 15 feet to see if their balloons stayed intact. Cameron Garcia, entering fourth grade at McKenna Elementary School, has attended Camp Invention for several years and likes that they are new activities each year. He also likes making friends from other schools as they work together on different projects.
Lockhart Elementary School fifth grader Lauren Clark, who has come to Camp Invention every summer since kindergarten, said that the workshops help her with science and technology in school. There were 20 high school-aged counselors and volunteers, along with 10 middle school-aged leaders in training. Ms. Natke said her amazing team of teachers and student helpers is what makes the program so successful. Incoming seventh grader Ryan Lepre, after attending the program for two years as a camper, is now a Leader-in-Training and hopes to become a counselor when he enters high school. Senior Juliette Liebov is in her third year as a counselor and this was joined on staff by her younger brother Damien. She supervised a group of first and second graders.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the Crane School of
Music at SUNY Potsdam, a master’s degree in music education from Western Connecticut State University and a certificate of advanced studies in educational administration from SUNY New Paltz. Both of his children are also Crane graduates and are now music teachers. Mr. Green incorporates music into all aspects of his life. He is the music director and organist for his church, and plays with a summer band. During a visit to Massapequa’s Summer Fine Arts program, Mr. Green said he was extremely impressed with the high level of participation and the enthusiasm from the students in art, music and theater workshops. He said he is proud to be joining a district with a reputable music and art program that is strongly supported by the community.
