Massapequa’s newest educators gained the knowledge they need to succeed as teachers, to lead their students to success, during a four-day orientation program. The Massapequa faculty welcomes approximately 30 new members this year, teaching a variety of grade levels and subject areas at the elementary and secondary level. Some are coming with previous teaching experience and others are right out of college with education degrees. They all came together on the morning of Aug. 23 for the first day of new teacher orientation at McKenna Elementary School’s Teacher Learning Center.Board of Education President Kerry Wachter welcomed the new faculty members and reminded them to start each day by remember the reason they became teachers. Superintendent Dr. William Brennan added that the new teachers went through a rigorous hiring process and those at orientation represent “the best of the best.” Dr. Brennan had a few pieces of advice for the teachers as they begin their Massapequa careers. He encouraged them to learn from their colleague by asking questions and seeking out mentors. They should also develop strong relationships with students, establish good communication with parents, be flexible and reflective, and never forget they are a part of a team. New teacher orientation include an overview of instructional technology resources, special education and the district’s teacher center. During breakout groups, teachers learned about the district’s curriculum and instructional practices, and met with building administrators and department leaders.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town’s Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees throughout the month of “ISeptember.inviteand encourage residents looking for a new pet, to check in with the Town’s Animal Shelter during the month of September, as general adoption fees will be waived. Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there, and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion,” Supervisor Saladino stated. During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, or visit www. oysterbaytown.com.“Inadditionto free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on September 17th from 10 am to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary,” said Councilman Labriola. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee. “If a pet is ever lost, they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for a microchip ID and returned to their rightful owner.” The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. Cafe, grew up in a working-class family, where money was tight and food insecurity was sometimes a cause of stress. Her vision for this organization is to have a storefront cafe that will serve healthy meals based upon a donation model. Although they do not have a physical cafe yet, since they started in 2016, they have hosted countless “meal events”, primarily at the VFW Hall on Edwards Street in Patchogue. Their meal events are socially engaging events, usually running for about 2.5 hours multiple times a month. They are meant to bring the community together, while serving anyone who attends a fresh healthy meal. This nonprofit is also licensed to offer the FEAST Program. The FEAST Program is a comprehensive health program, which offers in-person classes. FEAST stands for Food Education, Access, Support and Together. “We at Harmony Cafe believe that a healthy life consists of whole foods, whole people and whole communities,” said Rosemarie. “However, many people don’t have access to healthy fresh food, don’t have a strong support system and feel isolated from the community. Unhealthy diets is among some of the key contributors to the dramatic rise in obesity and dietary diseases affecting people in our country today. In order to address these issues, the FEAST Program serves parents or heads or households through our comprehensive 12-week Wellness Program. Saladino: Town To Host Famous Bluefish Tournament In Oyster Bay Registration Now Open To Anglers Of All Ages
If hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with food, raffles, awards and prizes sounds like a perfect day to you, then you’ll want to sign up immediately for the 36th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 18th and hosted by Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board. The posttournament tailgate party will take place on the beach at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay. “The Bluefish Tournament is a great all-day sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Join us for this fun day of tranquility on the water, the adrenaline rush of feeling that first big tug on your fishing line and the spirit of competition as you try to beat the tournament record and compete for prizes.”The tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is open to anglers of all ages. All contestants must be pre-registered. The entrance fee for the tournament is $40 for Town of Oyster Bay residents and $60 for non-residents. Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District Halloween is the theme for Massapequa High School’s marching band show this year, a fitting choice since the five performances will take place in the weeks leading up to the spooky holiday. Marching band members practiced the music and worked on their formations during a three-day camp at the high school from Aug. 9 to 11. They were on the turf field and in the band room to get ready for this year’s show. It will be performed at four home football games and at the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival on Oct. 19 at MitchelStudentsField.were under the direction of band teachers Eva Arnold, Andrew Dwork, Andrea Gropf and Jessica Wyman. They practiced snippets of songs from the “Halloween” movies that will comprise this year’s show, including the 1950s version of “Mr. Sandman,” the “Halloween” theme and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”

Lucas Mininni played outfield for the team. He made a game saving diving catch in the championship game of the State Tournament when the other team had bases loaded. His defense also carried over to the Regional Tournament where he had another superb catch in left field during the opening game win against Fairfield, CT. Michael Clark played an outstanding third base for the team. He had five putouts during the nohitter in the Regional Championship against Tom’s River, NJ. Michael also had a hot bat during the semi-final victory at the State Tournament going two for three with three RBIs and added three hits and three RBIs during the Regional Tournament. Ryan Huksloot played catcher. He handled a pitching staff that had 15 victories during the tournament run. He also caught the no-hitter in the Regional Championship game. During the tournament Ryan hit five home runs and had four in the State Tournament, including two in the State Championship game. Danny Fregara played an errorless centerfield. He also came into pitch during the extra inning opening victory during the State Tournament.

Coast Little League Champs
Manager: Roland Clark won a New York State Championship in 1989 when he went to Bristol, Connecticut as a player with Massapequa International Little League. This was the last time a Massapequa Little League team won a state title in the Williamsport Tournament, prior to winning it in 2022 as a Assistant Coach Brian Bekiers and Roland Clark played baseball together growing up in Massapequa and at Holy Trinity High School. They were both players on the 1991 New York State Little League Senior Division Championship Team for Massapequa International Little League. Assistant Coaches: Brian Bekiers, Eric Mininni, and Anthony Badagliacca are all volunteer coaches and manage teams during the spring intramural season for the Massapequa Coast Little League.
Badagliacca (aka Tony Bags) played a solid 2nd base throughout the tournament. He made it into ESPN’s Top 10 Plays with a diving put out during the East Regions. Anthony also came into pitch in a number of key situations during the tourney run. In total he added three bunt base hits during the tourney.
In spite of the outcome, fans all over the community and Long Island are proud of the players who were nicknamed, “Sons of Massapequa.” This was the first time in their 72-year history, that Massapequa went to the Little League World Series. They were also the first Long Island team to ever play in the Little League World Series in over 40 years. The Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, and the Village of Massapequa partnered together to give the team a hero’s welcome as they returned home. The Massapequa Coast Little League has definitely made Long Island proud.
Christian Bekiers played short stop and pitcher. Christian had a walk-off double in the bottom of the 8th inning which landed a victory in the opening game of the State Tournament. His hot bat continued with seven hits during the regional tournament and even pitched in high pressure situations.

The Massapequa Coast Little League has shown the world what they’re made of through their talents, diligence, and perseverance to win. The Massapequa team became the Metro-Region Champions in the beginning of August and later competed against Honolulu at the Little League World Series. Although their road to victory came to an end this summer, each player has stood out individually as playing a key role in this monumental team. It was through their teamwork and individual strong suits that got them as far as it did.

Danny scored the lone run and winning run in the opening District 31 victory over North Bellmore North Merrick. Mikey Castellano played catcher and outfield. He had a huge home run in the top of the 7th inning during the opening regional game against Tom’s River, NJ which in turn put the Coast squad up 6-3 and got them the victory. Mikey also had a couple of key hits during the Sectional Tournament Joey Lionetti played pitcher and 1st base. He pitched a nine strikeout no hitter against Tom’s River, NJ in the Regional Championship game that sent the Massapequa team to the LL World Series. He also had four home runs during the tournament including a huge grand slam in the District 31 Championship Game. Joey was the winning pitcher in the sectional final and the state semi-final Liam St. George played a solid outfield during the tournament. During the Regional Tournament in games two and three, he had late inning hits that drove in important RBIs that solidified the victories. Liam also came into pitch during an elimination game in the district tournament and got the save for the team.
Brendan Hanley played pitcher and outfield. Brendan was the winning pitcher in the State Championship Game. He gave the team many important innings in relief during the tournament. Brendan also made ESPN’s Top 10 Plays with his diving catch during the Regional Tournament. Alex Pagano played pitcher and 1st base. Alex hit five home runs during the tournament, three of which came during the State Tournament. He also was the winning pitcher for the second game in the District Tournament and also gave the team important innings of relief pitching. Alex had multiple hits in the Regional Tournament.

On Wednesday, August 31st, 2022, a parade was held in Massapequa to honor its Little League players. This parade served as a tribute to all their hard work and determination. The Massapequa Coast baseball team was honored for winning the Metro Championship and for becoming the first Long Island team since 1978 to reach the Little League World Series; the Massapequa International Little League softball team (12-year-old division) became the first local team to win the state championship, and the Massapequa Coast Little League (11-year-old division) celebrated their back to back state titles. All three teams had their own successes to celebrate and fans were eager to give them a proper celebration. The parade had a great turnaround where hundreds of fans and members of the community gathered on the streets with flags, signs, and even held up photos of their favorite athletes. The teams rode down Park Boulevard where they were applauded and praised in their hometown of Massapequa. At the end of the parade, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman spoke and held a ceremony where the three teams were formally recognized for all their hard work and achievements.

Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted, with a priority granted to very low income households and households with a person unemployed for 90 days or more. From electricity to robots to space, elementary students in the Massapequa School District explored a variety of scientific concepts at Camp Invention. The annual summer STEM program was held from Aug. 8 to 12 at Unqua Elementary School.The camp touched on all the core principles of STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students were led by certified teachers with assistance from leader interns from Massapequa High School and middle school-age leaders-intraining. Campers rotated among four different stations each day, along with snack and lunch. In the spacecation center, students constructed an astro-arm to use throughout their journey. They made discoveries about ice on the moon, studied planets and the asteroid belt, and observed an egg that eventually hatched to reveal a mystery Childrenanimal.put their engineering skills to the test in marble arcade. After learning about potential and kinetic energy, they built their own marble mazes. The young scientists learned about force, motion, pushes and pulls by exploring simple machines.Roboticaquatics combined robots with marine science, as students built devices to retrieve florescent jellyfish and created aquatic habitats. They had a blast when they programmed Link robots. In the attic, children solved riddles to learn about different inventions such as the motion picture projector and the sewing machine. They also used different battery-powered devices to make artistic masterpieces. “It’s fun and you get to create stuff,” Kaitlyn Considine said of Camp Invention. Entering third grade at Lockhart Elementary School, this was her first year taking part in the program and she enjoyed making friends from the other schools in Massapequa. Teamwork is one reason that East Lake Elementary School fifth grader Jack Turkewitz is a repeat participant in Camp Invention. His favorite center this year was robotics. “I like science, I like the hands-on projects and I like exploring and working together with my friends,” heHighsaid. school student assistants, known as leader interns, are a valuable asset to Camp Invention. They ensure that children get to each station and help the teachers implement the lessons. Massapequa High School junior Carlie Brophy worked with the program for the second time after a great experience last summer. “I enjoy helping the kids create, be inventive and persevere,” she said. They are specifically designed to target solid and liquid waste, including plastic bottles, cigarette filters, butts and packaging, microplastics and hydrocarbons. The technology uses a small pump to draw in surrounding water and skims any floating trash into its receptacle. The mechanism adjusts with the tide and is easily affixed to a floating dock or waterfront location.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca joined with local environmental groups to unveil new floating litter trap technology at Tappen Marina, the first of its kind anywhere in the United States. The ‘Collect’Thor,’ a silent, motorized waste collector which attracts and engulfs all solid or liquid waste floating on the water surface, was obtained by the Town through a grant from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund. The Town was selected by Cornell Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Friends of the Bay, The Waterfront Center, The Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, and Oyster Bay High“WeSchool.areso proud to have been awarded this grant the opportunity to lead the nation in rolling out new, innovative technology to protect our environment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Collec’Thors now in place at our marina will assist in our ongoing commitment to strengthen the ecosystem by removing debris from the water. I thank all of the local environmental organizations who assisted the Town in implementing this environmental technology, which collects up to 220 pounds of floating debris in just one cycle.” Two Collec’Thor traps have been installed at Harry Tappen Marina in Glenwood Landing, selected as an ideal location to help remediate plastic pollution in the Long Island Sound. In addition to support from local environmental advocacy groups, the project will also be supported by students from Oyster Bay High School, who will participate in the removal of debris, and analyze and identify marine pollution data. The project aligns with similar environmental initiatives in the Town to minimize plastic pollution in local waterways.

Town To Host 9/11 & Walls Of Honor Ceremony
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board invite residents to join them at the Town’s annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony scheduled for Thursday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. “This year marks the 21st anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, and to honor those we have lost we invite all residents to join us at our annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony. This remembrance ceremony features music, religious readings, a light tribute, and a reading of the names inscribed on the Town’s 9/11 wall,” said Supervisor Saladino.

Lifeguards will be on duty to protect residents as they enjoy the nice weather and swim in the ocean – and for no charge on the dates listed above. “Residents are invited to savor the last of the summer season by visiting our beautiful TOBAY Beach for one more weekend this September,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Not only will TOBAY remain open, but admission into the beach will also be free, making a visit to this staycation destination even more convenient and enticing.”Residents visiting the beach on Saturday, September 10th, can also enjoy the Town’s free, family fun Waterfront Festival at TOBAY Marina.

Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District With schedules and building maps in hand, students entering Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District went on the hunt for their classes in the days before the start of the 2022-2023 school year. Aug. 24 was the first of four Tour the Schedule dates for sixth, seventh and eighthWhethergraders. it was simply seeking out their classroom locations or actually following the schedule from periods 1 through 9, students toured the school with help from their parents. Many incoming sixth graders received guidance from older siblings who are more familiar with the building,Inthe auditorium lobby, Principal Jason Esposito and building administrators and staff handed out locks to sixth graders for their hallway lockers.
