Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 8.8 million young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 report having a mental illness. Among those who reported such illnesses, 42 percent indicated their illness went untreated. Substance abuse disorders also are more common among 18- to 25-year-olds than many people may think. SAMHSA notes that 5.1 million young adults report having a substance abuse disorder, and 87 percent of those with disorders are not treated. More information about mental health and substance abuse, including how to find treatment, is available at www.samhsa.gov.

Town Reunites Near-Drowning Victims with Heroic Rescuer struggling in the strong currents of the Great South Bay. “Our community takes great pride in recognizing the amazing actions of Christopher Madden, who displayed heroism during a time of crisis,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Christopher’s quick thinking and courageous actions saved these teenagers lives and had he not responded as he did, the outcome would have been tragically

different. Christopher Madden is not only a Good Samaritan, but an exemplary Town of Oyster Bay employee. We commend him for this lifesaving rescue.” 17 year-old Vincent LaGrega and his family were boating and attempted to anchor closer to the shore in the choppy water of the Great South Bay. Vincent jumped into the water in an attempt to swim to the beach

and underestimated the extremely challenging conditions. He was soon struggling and drifting further away from the boat, clearly in immediate danger of drowning. Vincent’s brother, Joseph, jumped into the water hoping to save him, but soon both boys were in a weakened condition and being pummeled by the waves. At that moment,

Christopher Madden spotted the boys and jumped onto a jet ski to rescue both of the boys who were gasping for air at this point. Christopher was able to bring the two boys back to the boat, and Vincent’s family credits Christopher’s actions with saving their son’s life that day. Councilman Imbroto added, “It’s no secret that

the Town enjoys the finest municipal workforce around, and now it’s clear that we also enjoy the most heroic. Christopher Madden went above and beyond the call of duty and saved Vincent’s life. I am honored to publicly commend Christopher for his amazing and courageous actions.”

When the world hit the proverbial pause button in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, technology was crucial to keeping people connected to the world around them, helping people maintain some semblance of normalcy as it pertained to work and education.

But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them ofﬂine, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should understand that maintenance is required to keep these devices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape. • Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are

designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those conditions can result in damage. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors. devices • Clean regularly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices you rely on each day. Some may require a specific cleaner or a particular fabric to help ensure the device isn’t scratched or damaged. Spray cleaners on a cloth and then wipe off devices, rather than spraying cleaners directly on electronics. Try a can of compressed air to remove dust from crevices or vents.

Security issues may arise when software is not updated, and programs may not run effectively or be compatible with others. Along the same vein, routinely clean out unused files to free up space, and clear cookies and browser histories to maintain speed and efficiency. Routine maintenance can keep electronics working properly when they’re needed the most.

One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help

Massapequa P.A.L. and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) recently met to bring awareness to the importance of youth making healthy choices and displaying good character during adolescence. The new banner, “Good Character and Healthy Choices Matter” was donated by

MTAC to help promote this essential message to our youth. Massapequa P.A.L. also joins MTAC’s efforts to support family dialogue with doctors when children are injured and require prescription or pain medication. MTAC’s Opioids and Sports Handbook is now available at the Massapequa P.A.L. office. The handbook outlines important questions parents should ask physicians and assists family discussion

about the dangers of taking medication without a prescription. Communication is vital to our community’s healthy future.
