Mr. Swanson said that the camp taught students about coding, programming and engineering design. It also prepared them for their middle school technology courses, which now have a greater emphasis on robotics, particularly in eighth grade. “The camp gives them a taste of robotics, to give students an interest in classes that are offered

at the high school and middle school levels,” said Patricia LiVecchi, supervisor of career and technical education. “This is the wave of the future.” Members of the high school robotics team also worked with the students throughout the week. In addition to building robots, camp participants explored 3D printing.

throughout the week as the challenges got progressively harder. For one activity, they added an arm with a sensor that could identify the color of a ball. If the ball was the color that students programmed the robot to respond to, the arm would pick it up. On the ﬁnal day of the camp, students participated in a robot battle, trying to knock the others out of the ring.

A small but enthusiastic group of students were immersed in robotics at Massapequa High School in August, giving them an introduction to the rapidly expanding technology. Celebrating 25 Years This year marks the 25 year anniversary for American Black Belt Academy, located at 4875 Merrick Road in Massapequa. Started in 1994 by Tom and Lorraine LoVarco as a small modest Karate school located in Massapequa Park it has grown today to be one of the largest most diverse schools in the country. “We started in a small 900 square foot location were I taught all the classes and my wife Lorraine was the ofﬁce manager,” says Tom LoVarco. Our enrollment began to grow quickly and our students were competing in National tournaments and doing very well. The school started to be recognized for producing top rated

competitors. Changing locations several times in the same area the size of the school is nearly 10 times larger than when it opened. And since opening, the facility has expanded into offering not only high quality American Kenpo classes for kids and adults but now offers a full ﬁtness program, Kids BJJ and MMA, Kickboxing and a Martial Arts After School Program with transportation from all the schools in the Massapequa School District. A full day Martial Arts camp is even available during the summer. They also host two large Karate tournaments each year. Now joined by their children Chris and Danielle along with an amazing

staff of instructors and assistants the school is very organized and extremely professional. The location has 3 large classrooms that gives the ability to offer over 80 classes each week. Allowing for convenient class times and the detailed separation of ages and experience level. The story doesn’t end here. Plans for the future of American Black Belt are still in the making. Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 35th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students beneﬁt from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certiﬁed, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terriﬁc Toddler Time for boys and girls.

The Charity of the Month for August is: The Social Brain www.facebook.com/socialbrainny

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

September 11th Remembrance Ceremony Memorial is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Memorial features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The September 5th ceremony includes a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings.
