NETS BASKETBALL CLINICS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino in partnership with the Long Island Nets, recently hosted the first of three Basketball Clinics which took place at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. The clinic, brought together boys and girls ages 6 through 13 to learn the fundamentals of basketball from some of the area’s finest coaches and players. Remaining clinics will take place on Friday, August 23rd at John J. Burns Park, Massapequa and on Friday, September 20th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Both clinics will take place at 6:30pm and will last for 90 minutes. The clinics, which offer limited space, will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 35th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

SHOOTOUT FOR SOLDIERS - Shootout for Soldiers is a 24 hour lacrosse event benefiting American veterans. The event is fun. It’s not a tournament or about recruiting. The event is all about supporting those who serve our country. Hempstead Town Councilman Dennis Dunne attended the Shootout for Soldiers on July 18, 2019 at Field of Dreams in Massapequa. Also attending were Joey Diele of Seaford, Gregory Porcaro of Merrick and Jack Galvani of Seaford.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout the months of October, November, and December. This 8-week program will be held at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center and Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration begins September 18th, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the

Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, as it is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I urge those who wish for their toddler to participate to come down and register

beginning Wednesday, September 18, as this 8-week program fills quickly on a first come first serve basis” Each class is about 30 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof

of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment. Toddler arts and crafts projects for this program can include season/holiday cards, ceramics, masks, and headpieces. The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 8 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Tuesdays

Minds In Motion and literacy and math abilities. Minds in Motion begins just past the library with a coconut tree. Students can follow the numbers 1 through 10 or the letters of the alphabet up the tree. They can do frog jumping on lily pads, go crab walking or play hopscotch using the many visual elements. The maze also

includes footsteps, paw prints, gears, fish, arrows and different shapes. The creators included occupational therapist Christina Davis-Stanio, teacher Paula Findlay and speech therapist Kim Watson. They say the purpose of the maze is to help students become more mindful of their bodies.
