After making so many memories over the past six years, fifth graders at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District had some time to reflect in the weeks leading up to their moving-up ceremony. A boat trip, bagel breakfast, picnic and yearbook distribution were among the celebratory activities for the children as they prepared to say goodbye to a familiar setting and head off to Berner Middle School. In September, they will come together as sixth graders with their peers from five other elementary schools. Olivia Reyes said she is looking forward to changing classes and joining clubs. On June 21, East Lake’s fifth graders received their yearbooks, and were given some time that morning to walk around the school to get them signed. Students visited their former

teachers, who penned friendly messages that will leave a lasting impression. “I had a lot of really good teachers,” Olivia said, “and they made learning a lot of fun.” Nicole Heller reflected on the activities that brought learning to life, such as the trip to Commerce Plaza to learn about finance

or the time she and her classmates built robots out of cardboard tubes. “The teachers taught us so many things,” she said, “and we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.” Shawn Hillkewicz wanted to take the opportunity to say goodbye to the people who have prepared him for the next

step in his educational journey. “It’s going to be a big change, but I’m looking forward to middle school,” he said. “East Lake has done a really good job of preparing me, and I think I’m going to do great because of all the things I’ve learned here.”

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or

Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great team building and community leadership opportunity for your employees. 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Lemonade Stand Fundraiser Last year, two young brothers, Sean and Kyle Griffin, the sons of a NYPD Sergeant, opened up a Lemonade Stand in front of their grandparent’s home in Massapequa Park with the hopes of raising funds for the families of fallen NYPD, FDNY and Port Authority Police (PAPD) heroes. The Griffin boys, with the help of their parents Sgt. Matthew Griffin and Debi Griffin, are back at it again with their Third Annual Lemonade Stand Fundraiser on Friday, August 2nd at 325 Cartwright Boulevard, Massapequa Park. Rain date: August 3. Last year, the lemonade stand attracted firefighters and police officers from throughout the region

and raised $16,085 to support Answer the Call, also known as the New York Police & Fire Widows’ & Children Benefit Fund – the only nonprofit organization that provides immediate and ongoing financial assistance to the families of NYPD, FDNY, and PAPD members killed in the line of duty.
