Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island Invites Families To Add Names Of Victims And First Responders To September 11th Memorial Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is offering families of victims and first responders to add loved ones’ names to its 9-11 Memorial as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks on America. The Memorial monument, located within Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, was erected in 2003 and currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the

9-11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and individuals who worked to rescue and recover the victims at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. Family members who lost loved ones are encouraged to submit their names using a special form with required information and attestation. The deceased’s full name and optionally, their profession or role, will be added to the memorial. All forms

must be submitted and arrive by email or mail by July 31, 2021. The form is available online at https:// CCLongIsland.org/9-11memorial/. Those who lost their lives later due to health conditions and exposure at Ground Zero and lower Manhattan are also eligible. “As we approach the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. Our memorial wall at Holy

Rood Cemetery is a place of solace, reﬂection and tribute to the lives that were tragically lost. Located in a specially designated area at the cemetery, the Memorial will be the site of a special outdoor mass which will be presided over by Diocese of Rockville Centre Bishop John Barres on September 11th this year,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Catholic Cemeteries

of Long Island’s 9-11 memorial is a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks. Inscription on the memorial is provided by Catholic Cemeteries at no cost to the families, and the individuals do not have to be Catholic for inclusion. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and

Marijuana Impacts the Brain

Marijuana use during adolescence can cause long-term or permanent adverse changes in the brain (National Institutes on Drug Abuse) including permanent IQ loss – up to 8 points. These IQ points do not come back, even after quitting marijuana (SAMHSA).

Compared with teens who don’t use, students who use marijuana are more likely not to finish high school or get a college degree (SAMHSA). THC, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects, affects cells throughout the brain, including cells in

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Brooks (SD-8) spent several hours Tuesday morning, July 20th, volunteering his time at the Lindenhurst facility of L.I. Cares/Harry Chapin Foodbank as part of his ongoing mission to further understand the needs of his district. Senator Brooks met with Program Coordinator Marc Leonelli and several other members of the L.I. Cares staff to discuss their ongoing fight against hunger and the

multileveled logistical operations they oversee daily. As part of his visit, Senator Brooks also spent time assisting with the vital work of L.I. Cares, stacking shelves and putting together care packages for customers who came through. L.I. Cares was founded in 1980 by singer-songwriter and activist Harry Chaplin to assist Long Island’s hungry and food insecure populations. In the 40 years since its founding,

it has done that and more, working tirelessly to help countless Long Islanders every year. L.I. Cares distributes tens of millions of pounds of food and supplies annually to those in need. The life-saving work of this organization has resulted in the distribution of more than 1.4 million meals, helping more than 230,000 Long Island residents feed themselves and their families. “Seeing first-hand the

work that L.I. Cares does day in and day out was a sobering experience,” said Senator Brooks. “It is easy to look past problems when you are fortunate enough not to experience them yourself, but seeing the extent to which food insecurity and hunger hurts so many in our

community made clear how serious of an issue this is on Long Island. I am thankful to those at L.I. Cares for allowing me the opportunity to visit their facility and for the crucial work they do. Their work saves lives, and I am committed to doing all I can to help address food
