Town To Host Empire State Ride Long Island To End Cancer Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced a partnership with Empire State Ride Long Island to host a charity ride to raise funds to end cancer. The ride, which will take place on Saturday, July 23, will raise funds for clinical research and trials that have helped to save the lives of cancer patients at Catholic Health on Long Island and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the nation’s first cancer center in the United States dedicated exclusively to cancer research. “I am so proud that the Town of Oyster Bay will play host to such an amazing event. Empire State Ride Long Island is poised to make a tremendous difference in the lives of those touched by cancer, and it will be directly due to
the actions of our amazing residents who sign up for this fundraising ride,” said Supervisor Saladino. “With two wheels, our residents can change the world. I look forward to seeing everyone on event day, and I encourage any one of any age or riding ability to sign up for the event, as three course routes will be featured.” The event will feature 3 course lengths: a 10mile route spanning the shoreline from Bayville to Centre Island (ideal for family and children), a 25mile route featuring the scenic rolling hills from Bayville through Locust Valley, Glen Cove and Old Brookville (for more experienced riders) and a 62-mile route through Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Roslyn Harbor, to Port Washington, and then all the way to Teddy Roosevelt’s
home at Sagamore Hill (for advanced cyclists). By participating in Empire State Ride Long Island, bicyclists will have an opportunity to make a real impact on cancer research and patient care through clinical trials at these locations. In 2021, over $100,000 was raised by nearly 250 riders. Registration is now open for this fundraising event with a $25 fee for each participant. Riders will commit to a fundraising minimum which is $200 for adults and $75 for riders under 18 for all routes. To kick start each rider’s efforts, their $25 registration fee will be credited to their fundraising page. Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center Serving The Community For Over 25 Years
The Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center is a non-profit interfaith service that provides support for the elderly. The organization has been serving the community for over 25 years and is a cooperative of Farmingdale United Methodist Church, St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, St. Kilian’s Roman Catholic Church and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. They offer socialization and stimulation for individuals 60 years old and above with physical and/or memory impairment, generally Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. Activities they offer include arts and crafts, live entertainment, group exercise, pet therapy, blackboard
activities and small group workshops called “Motivate The Minds”. Their clients are provided with assistance with everyday functions such as ambulatory needs and they also offer twice a month support group meetings for their caregivers. Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents, hosted by students in child study courses. The preschool is supervised by child study program director Anna Fierro-Gregg. The preschool program will begin in early December and will end next June. Two sessions are being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each approximately 80 minutes. Children must attend both days of the session chosen. The Head Injury Association also offers support and services to help navigate the eligibility process and throughout the application phase to assist in accessing supports and services offered through Head Injury Association. It also offers employment services, with Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) to achieve and maintain employment, and to support independent living through training, education, rehabilitation and career development. Another Kinexion affiliate organization is the Center for Developmental Disabilities, located in Woodbury. “We help children and adults overcome
barriers to living, working, learning and enjoying recreational opportunities in the community of their choice,” says Jay Silverstein, Ph.D., Executive Director of The Center. “We are dedicated to the achievement of excellence and innovation within a community based upon respect, kindness and open communication.” The center offers a variety of diverse programs include a Children’s Day Program, which operates 12 months a year and serving children ages 5-21 who have an educational classification of Autism, Intellectual Disability or Multiple Disabilities. The classroom curriculum covers academic subjects such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, while also fostering the development of each student’s daily living skills and social skills. Computer and technology education are a part of each classroom’s weekly schedule. The Center also launched the “Support with Dignity” initiative to enhance opportunities for individuals to live with greater independence within their communities. This initiative embraces three pillars: Respectful Interactions, Promoting Independence and fostering Purposeful, Person-Centered Activities. Through a collective commitment to best practices in the field, the Center will advance the hopes and dreams of the individuals it serves. The Chamber is responsible for many things that small businesses may not realize. In addition to competing against fellow students, the students also compete against teacher Nicholas Donohue, alumni forecasters, the National Weather Service, other guest forecasters and various computer models.
Each forecaster has a weather-related code name that is used to keep the identity of each competitor a secret until the end of the competition. This year’s top overall student forecaster was Jeffrey Ram (codename “Atmospheric River”), who finished second behind only Mr. Donohue (“Anvil Crawler”). Andreas Efstathiou (“Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service”) was the runner-up.
Matthew Moran (“La Nina”) was the top finishing alumni forecaster, finishing fifth overall in this year’s competition. Now a sophomore at the high school’s main campus, he was the top student forecaster in last year’s competition. Winners received an academic prize along with a T-shirt welcoming them into the elite group of Massapequa forecasters known as the Chief Meteorologists.
The Long Island Museum Awarded Grant From Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has awarded grant funding to the Long Island Museum to support “In the Moment,” a free program which designed to creatively engage those living with dementia-related illnesses and their care partners. “Art can be a powerful tool to enhance quality of life for individuals living with a dementia-related illness and their caregivers. It stimulates the mind and
creates opportunities for selfexpression and socialization,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and chief executive officer. “We are proud to support the Long Island Museum in delivering this impactful program to Long Islanders affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.” “This AFA grant has allowed us to purchase a 75” Vibe Smartboard Pro to use as we return to inperson programming,”
said Lisa Unander, Director of Education at the Long Island Museum. “We are building upon the lessons we learned through remote engagement and bringing the most successful aspects of these virtual programs to enhance our gallery sessions. Ninth Grade Scientists Awarded For Their Outstanding Projects Students in science research classes at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus not only participated in the 2022 Long Island Science Congress competition, but were awarded for their outstanding projects. LISC is an adjudicated exhibit of science projects by students in Nassau and Suffolk county middle, junior high and senior high schools, sponsored by the Long Island section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. Student works were based upon independent experiments performed by students under the guidance of Ames research teacher, Carrie Kaplun. This year, 13 ninth grade research students were recognized at this year’s competition. Finn Curley, Michael Lerch and Sofia Maran earned high honors with the Lloyd K. Chanin Memorial Award, which includes a $50 prize. Madeline Douglas, Mia Giannico, Amanda Kammerdener, Edward Pan, Shea Ringel and Delaney Sampson earned the Honors Award, and Ava Chaikin, Tyler Lopez, Cassidy Morrow and Katja Vardoulias received the Achievement Award.

won’t have to lose techniques we now heavily rely on, but instead will be able to incorporate these tools to create even more memorable multi-sensory moments together.” The Long Island Museum is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities. Located in Stony Brook, they have numerous exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and educational programs for adults and children. The Long Island Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a Smithsonian Affiliate. The $6,000 grant will support the Museum’s “In the Moment” program. Created in 2011, this innovative program takes individuals living with dementia and their care partners on guided tours of the museum’s collection of art, historical objects, and seasonal exhibits. Additionally, the program offers hands-on art workshops which afford opportunities for creative expression, with all needed materials provided for free. All programs are led by museum educators and designed to be engaging and cognitively stimulating. Programming is currently offered virtually through Zoom and as a
hybrid, in-person/virtual option. Since its inception, the program served more than 3,200 individuals, according to the Museum. In April 2022, the Museum hosted its first hybrid In the Moment program with the Making Memories at the Movies event. Participants gathered in the museum’s event space to see clips of films accompanied by facilitated discussions by licensed master social worker Marcy Rhodes, to help prompt memories and
spark conversation. Participants also joined Zoom from home, assisted living and senior facilities to partake in this wonderful program. AFA is able to provide vital services, like this grant, through the generosity of individual contributions, sponsorships and fundraising activities. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that ‘Dressed to Kilt,’ the most prestigious and exciting Scottish fashion event in the world, will be coming to the Town of Oyster Bay. Dressed to Kilt, founded by Scottish actor Sir Sean Connery in 2003, is an annual charity fashion show that raises funds to benefit the Navy SEAL Foundation. The show will take place on the evening of Saturday July 23rd at the Mill Neck Manor Estate in Mill Neck. “Dressed to Kilt is a well-established charity fashion event that has a long history of serving veterans on both sides of the Atlantic. In previous years, the show has raised funds for organizations such as The Erskine Hospital, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and The Wounded Warrior
Project, all benefitting the brave men and women who fought in protection of our freedoms,” said Supervisor Saladino. “It’s sure to be an entertaining evening on Oyster Bay’s beautiful Gold Coast, and all for a great cause.” This year’s theme is ‘Dress for Adventure- From the Highlands to the Hamptons,’ featuring clothing for all things outdoorsy, including but not limited to hunting, shooting and fishing. Participating models in the show will include Navy SEAL veterans, US Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, A-list celebrities and athletes. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board recently recognized Gina Cantatore, of North Massapequa, for her athletic and academic accomplishments both spanning the entirety of her four years at the University of Delaware. Gina won the UCA National Collegiate Cheerleading Championship for four consecutive years as a
member of the University of Delaware Blue Hens, all the while she earned a top spot on the Dean’s list for four consecutive years, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. “Gina’s passion for cheerleading was ignited when she joined the Plainedge Bobcat’s Cheerleading team. Her dedication to academic success was fostered and flourished during her time
in the Plainedge School District,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Gina is a shining example of a homegrown superstar, and we are so excited to see what she does next.” Gina is one of only six seniors on the Blue Hens Cheerleading Team to earn a championship ring as a first, second, third, and fourth year student, and she is set to begin dental school in the fall.
Durso Announces Summer Reading Challenge The New York State Assembly’s 2022 Summer Reading Challenge is here, and Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) is encouraging students in New York and across Long Island to participate. Assemblyman Durso, in coordination with New York State libraries, is sponsoring this Summer Reading Challenge to inspire kids to explore far-off worlds, discover new interests or learn new skills. Over one million children and teens participated in the Summer Reading Challenge last year and we are looking for more young individuals to join for this year’s theme
“Oceans of Possibilities,” celebrating all things water and ocean-related. “Summer break is a great time for kids to visit their local library and check out the exciting activities and books they have to offer,” said Durso. “I am encouraging and challenging my own kids and students in my district to continue learning over the summer by picking up a book. Studies have shown that children who read over summer break retain information better, come to school ready to learn, and avoid the loss of learning known as the ‘summer slide’.” After completing 40 or more days of reading and marking each day on the
