Counting Chickens “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” ~ John Lennon If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Spring Sports Champions The Massapequa School District Board of Education honored its spring sports champions at its June 21st meeting. The varsity baseball team won the state championship for the second time in school history. With a record of 22-6, the team also captured its 13th Nassau County championship and eighth Long Island title. The Chiefs were led by head coach Tom Sheedy

and assistant coach Chris Cafiero. Both the girls and boys lacrosse teams won county titles. The girls team, under the direction of head coach Megan Protano and assistant coach LeighAnn Zimmer, were county champions for the third year in a row and fourth time overall. The boys team, led by head coach Tim Radowski and assistant coach George Powers, have won back-to-back county titles and 10 in school history. From the girls track and field team, senior Brittany Membreno was county champion in the
discus event and finished fifth in the New York state championship. Senior Emily Corso was the county champion in the pole vault. “To win a championship in any season takes a lot of skill and a little bit of luck,” said John Piropato, director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation. The board also recognized teacher Carol Ann Habeeb-Kiel, who was inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletic Hall of Fame last year, for her 29 years of success coaching the girls varsity volleyball team.

Musicians Shine Five student musicians from the Massapequa UFSD, all of whom are attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), showcased their impressive talents at the LIHSA Spring Music Festival. Singer-songwriter Toni Ciccolella wowed the audience with her original song “Save Me.” She also lent her voice to several numbers, ranging from “Trip It In A Ring” from Purcell’s baroque opera The Fairy Queen, to the Motown soul classic “I’ll Be There,” to the traditional standards
“Route 66” and “Take Five.” Multitalented musician Alyssa Mener sang a wide variety of tunes. She performed two solos — “Voi Che Sapete” from Mozart’s timeless comic opera The Marriage of Figaroand the standard “The Nearness of You — and joined fellow vocalist Toni on many of the same numbers. She played guitar on the original student song “With You” and performed double duty (guitar and vocals) on the pop hit “Issues.” Double threat Christian
Scala played guitar and sang on the progressive acoustic number “I Blew It Off,” and joined his fellow Massapequa vocalists on “Trip It In A Ring,” “I’ll Be There” and “Route 66,” among others. Students Succeed French language students in the Massapequa School District ranked nationally in Le Grand Concours, an exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses participated in the 83rd annual National French Contest. They were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French. Erin Goldrick and
Adriana Kamor were gold medal winners as they ranked in the 95th percentile in the nation. Students Join Elite Scholars Five Massapequa UFSD students attending Nassau BOCES Barry Tech were recently inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). These outstanding scholars earned membership in the distinguished organization based on their superior academic achievement, dedicated community service and the enthusiastic endorsement of their teachers. The 2018 NTHS inductees were Automotive Technology students Alex Acuna and William Healy, Aviation Operations students Samuel Darby and Samara Podmore, and Culinary Arts student Krystle Peer. “These students have
honed their talents and followed their passions to earn this honorable induction,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “They are the future of our society and economy; they are our hope for a better world.” Membership in the NTHS is the nation’s highest honor for excellence in career and technical education. These students have consistently distinguished themselves by exemplifying exceptional qualities, such as honesty, leadership, responsibility and good character. They are the embodiment of the NTHS
vision, “success favors the prepared mind.” The NTHS is recognized by business, industry and education as the standard for student achievement and leadership in career and technical education. Membership in the NTHS helps top students find success in today’s highly competitive workplace by encouraging scholastic achievement and cultivating a desire for personal excellence. values as they move on to middle school. Kindness was the focus of Birch Lane Elementary School’s moving up ceremony. Fifth-grader Victoria Klein spoke about the kindness tree that was put up in the lobby, in which paper leaves were added to acknowledge good deeds performed by students. “I really believe this school has helped make me into the person I am today,” she said, “and will ultimately help my future and the way I look at life. So, I give all my thanks to this wonderful school and everyone in it for all it has taught me.” Fairfield Elementary School fifth-grader Kaelah Henry recounted how many lessons not only benefitted her academically but made her a better person. When her first-grade class raised baby chicks for a few weeks, she learned to be more mature and caring. Circus arts activities in fifth-grade taught her perseverance. “All of my teachers have taught me the significance of being kind, honest and courageous,” she said. “They have influenced all of us with their actions and their character.” Students were able to celebrate their elementary years by looking back upon their many memories.
The fifth-grade parent committee at Lockhart Elementary School created a photo slideshow for the moving up ceremony. Recognition included the President’s Award for Educational Achievement and Educational Excellence, New York State Comptroller Award and Triple C Award, as well as several school-specific awards. Musical performances reflected the past and future while embracing tradition. Unqua students performed “How Do We Say Goodbye?” while Lockhart students sang “Don’t Stop Believing.” Birch Lane’s fifth-graders recited the school song, Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis presented her blueprint for success, with advice such as “believe when others are doubting,” “listen while others are talking” and “persist while others are quitting,” among other tips. She spoke about the opportunities they will have in middle school such as learning a world language, joining one or more of approximately 30 clubs and exercising in the fitness center. “Bottom line is that you’ll be able to become more independent and follow your interests,” she said. “There’s something for everyone.”
The creativity is flowing at Massapequa High School where several hundred students are participating in the Summer Fine Arts Camp, which features courses in art, music and theater. The program brings students from the district’s nine schools together. Summer Fine Arts Coordinator Jessica Wyman said children participate for a variety of reasons including to improve their abilities or just have fun. Many will take a different course each week during the five-week camp. “Students can have a variety of experiences in the fine and performing arts,” Ms. Wyman said. “That’s the appeal of this program.” All classes are taught by current or former Massapequa teachers, who are supported by about 20 high school student assistants. Beginner instrumental music classes are open to incoming fourth-graders who will be playing in the band or orchestra for the first time, giving them a head start for the new school year. Advanced instrumental courses are for students who have at least a year of experience. Specialized music classes throughout
the summer include jazz band, acoustic guitar and Celtic fiddling. One of the most popular art classes is the iPad Claymation course, which merges traditional and digital art skills. Students create story characters out of clay, and use other art supplies to make sets and props. Working in groups of three or four, they create their stop animation movies on iPads. Morgan Rezza, who will be entering fifth grade, said she did some basic stop animation in art classes at East Lake Elementary School, and wanted the chance to further explore. She liked having three hours a day to work, which allowed her group to steadily progress on their movie about animals ordering ice cream and then having a food fight. A 3D art class expanded to two weeks this year. In the first half, students used clay to make functional art such as candleholders, cups, napkin holders and spoon and chopsticks rests, and fun projects like animals hatching out of eggs. The second half was devoted to glazing and painting. Teacher Paul Leone led demonstrations on different techniques. The theme was “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle” in the
drawing and painting class. Participants took books that would have been bound for the trash and transformed them into pieces of art using collage, rubberstamping and watercolor paint techniques. “I want the students to learn about different artists and different mediums,” said teacher Ellen Cervone. “Most of all, I want them to try something new and have fun.” Musical theater classes included a session for students entering grades 3-5, and another for incoming middle schoolers. Young actors learned songs from a variety of Broadway shows along with the choreography. “I like it because we get to perform on stage at the end,” said incoming seventh-grader Madison Grossfeld, referring to the culminating show for families. She and sixthgrader Sofia Maran said they signed up for the theater classes to improve their skills so they can audition for future school plays. “I want the students to be more confident on stage,” said musical director Katie Tauches. “It will make them better performers.”

The Massapequa High School Class of 2025 will come together for the first time in September as the students begin a threeyear stop at Berner Middle School. The district’s six elementary schools hosted moving up ceremonies during the week of June 18th, as approximately 500 fifth-graders closed out the first part of their educational journeys. Programs included musical performances, awards presentations, student reflections, tributes to parents, farewell remarks and words of wisdom from administrators. “Have faith in yourselves and work hard,” McKenna Elementary School Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry said to her graduates. “Simply wake up each day and try your best.” “Remember to be true to yourself, laugh at the silly stuff and always do what makes you happy,” noted Unqua Elementary School Principal Deanna Catapano. East Lake Elementary School Assistant Principal Mary Velte reminded students of the qualities mentioned in the book “Wonder” — courage, kindness, friendship and character — and asked them to embrace those
