“Today, you are going to be the first graduate of the Massapequa High School Class of 2020,” Principal Brian Conboy told Allen John Pilate III in the auditorium lobby on July 2, in front of a small gathering of family members and staff. The senior, better known as A.J., will be attending the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at West Point. Because he has to be there before Massapequa’s graduation ceremony on July 22, he was given an opportunity to put on his blue gap and gown

and receive his diploma. The socially distanced ceremony was attended by family members, teachers, guidance staff, coaches and administrators including new high school Principal Barbara Lowell. Mr. Conboy, who served as interim principal for the past two years, opened the short program by playing pomp and circumstance on his phone, then spoke about A.J.’s achievements at Massapequa High School. A.J. was an AllCounty lacrosse player and was on the 2019 state championship team. He also played football and

wrestled, was a member of the National Honor Society and Peer AIDS Educators Club, and took several Advanced Placement and college-level courses. A.J., who attended Fairfield Elementary School as a child, said he wanted to go to West Point Prep because it offered him an opportunity to pursue all of his passions – serve his country, get a good education and play lacrosse. He wants to study mechanical engineering and eventually become an engineer in the Army’s special forces.

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. I also at this time want to extend all of our thanks to Immediate Past President Jamie Bogenshutz for her two years of service and wish her well in her future endeavors. We installed our new Executive Board and Board of Directors on June 25, 2020 at Klestinec Park with social distancing and other safety measures, like masks, in place so that all were safe. My thanks to Town Supervisor Joe Saladino and NYS Assemblyman John Mikulin for installing our team as needed. We then proceeded to American Beauty Bistro for the outdoor Luncheon and we had a great time. I was able to give padfolios to all of the Board Members to use, and I also announced all of my appointments at that time. One of the appointments was our new Legal Counsel Mr. Michael Venditto, who will do a great job for us, and he will also chair the Government Affairs Committee as well. My thanks to Michael and all of the Committee Chairs for agreeing to serve during my administration. Thanks also to Past Legal Counsel Joanne Hawthorne for her work, and we wish her well in the future.

Special thanks to Past Chamber President Gary Slavin for filing all of the needed paperwork for the PPP Program and other grants, as we are now receiving those funds and using them to our benefit as a Chamber. Revenue and resources are now important. As a reminder, if you as a business have not paid your dues yet, please remit to the office as we are trying to keep all members on the rolls for our benefit. We appreciate all of the members’ cooperation with this, if able to do so. New members are welcome, and we would appreciate if you would ask another business to join our Chamber as well, as this keeps us strong.

Paws Of War Desperate For Funds To Help American Soldiers Bring Harley Home Syria is not a safe place for the American soldiers who are stationed there, but it’s even more dangerous for a dog. American troops have adopted a stray dog named Harley, raising her to be an important part of their team, and they refuse to leave her behind. Leaving her in Syria would be disastrous, so Paws of War is on a mission to help bring the dog back to the states, where she can live out her days in peace with “AJ.” “When these guys befriend a dog in a war zone it’s often what helps them get through each day,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “They

absolutely know they can’t leave Harley behind, so we agreed to work together with them and other contacts we have in that are in a team effort to bring her back to America. But we can’t do it without the help of the public, because we need donations to pull this off.” The troops were out on a mission when they heard a puppy crying. When they investigated, they found six puppies, but only one that was still alive. The others likely died of starvation or dehydration, and nobody knows what happened to their mother. They couldn’t leave the puppy behind, so they took her

with them. The soldiers named her Harley and cared for the dog, getting her what she needed to thrive and grow. She’s now become an important part of their day, bringing love to their life and making everyone smile. Her presence has made them all feel like they have a little bit of home with them. Now that “AJ”, who’s name cannot be released due to security reasons, will be heading back to the United States, the troop is on board with having Harley go with him. They have reached out to Paws of War to help make it happen. “These soldiers know how dangerous it would

be to leave their furry family member there in Syria,” added Misseri. “We will make every effort to bring Harley to America so she can live out her life here.
