While summer is time for beach, barbeques and boating, on an average day in June or July, more than 11,000 12-17-year-olds start drinking alcohol for the first time (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). In the Massapequas, youth report having their first drink before the age of fourteen and as they navigate through high school, underage drinking increases dramatically (2018 NYSOASAS PFS YDS).

MTAC’s new underage drinking prevention campaign, Alcohol and Teens Don’t Mix: Be Their Guide. Don’t Provide. offers resources to help parents talk with their youth about the consequences and prevention of underage drinking and how it affects their brain, health and safety. Adolescence is a critical time for our youth as the brain is still developing - through the age of twenty-five. Alcohol and drugs can interfere with

the natural development of the brain. When children begin using alcohol or drugs before the age of fifteen, it increases their likelihood of alcohol or drug dependence into adulthood (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice. Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need. 6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night. PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. Miriam H. says, “Rhonda is a true professional that looks out for the best interest of her clients. She works hard at finding the best solutions and making her clients shine. One page, @classof2020chiefs, showcases the decorated spirit doors while the other, @massapequaseniors, highlights the students’ college plans. Senior class president Alex Lawless said that he and his fellow officers are constantly looking for ideas to continue the spirit of senior year. They receive input from their fellow seniors and share ideas with Ms. Zappulla and administration. “We are all trying to stay positive and optimistic and looking at how we can adjust our senior year experience to make it memorable,” he

said. “Everyone is a little upset about the senior events being changed but everyone acknowledges this is an important sacrifice we have to make to keep the population healthy.” Alex added that the class officers take seriously their responsibility as elected representatives to make sure all seniors are heard. One near unanimous wish is to have a physical graduation, which is being planned for early August at Hofstra University if gatherings are permitted then. The initial date for graduation, June 22, will instead feature a senior car parade from Berner Middle School to the high school. Student Government President Alex Carmenaty said that there is a strong bond among the Class of 2020 and that unity transcends their different high school experiences. Those unifying moments have come throughout their time together since students

from six elementary schools became one group at Berner Middle School. For Alex, being the play-by-play announcer for multiple sports teams formed a strong connection between himself and Massapequa’s athletes. He understands the pain they felt losing their final season before graduation, and used his personal podcast to give athletes a place to reflect on their time wearing the blue and gold. A mutual respect for each other, he said, is what defines the Class of 2020.

During National Nurses Week (May 6-12) and throughout the month of April, dinners, lunches and breakfasts, along with uplifting thank you notes from PSEG Long Island employees, have been sent to daytime and overnight staff caring for COVID-19 patients across Long Island. To date, more than 300 meals have been provided at a dozen facilities from the Hamptons to the Queens County line. The healthcare workers are most appreciative and send their return thanks with photos of them with the meals.
