YES Community Counseling Center’s BRIDGES Program is hosting Transitioning to College, a FREE workshop for parents and graduating high school seniors transitioning to college this fall. The program is on Wednesday, July 13th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at YES Community Counseling Center, 152 Center Lane, Levittown. The purpose is to empower young adults to navigate the challenges of starting college and assist parents during this sensitive milestone. The evening will kick off with a panel of speakers addressing young adult social/emotional growth and common college transition issues. Next, The Safe Center LI will focus on creating healthy relationships, including sexual assault prevention. The final part of the program offers a choice of workshops from study skills to match one’s learning style to what college students should know about drugs and alcohol. A separate parent discussion will focus on ways to support their child’s transition to college. Naloxone training will also be offered to both parents and young adults. Spanish translation services will be available for parent sessions. The College Transition program is also supported by YES Community Counseling Center’s PACT Initiative and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition. The ride, which will take place on Saturday, July 23, features 3 different course lengths for riders of all ages and ability. All course routes begin at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, in Oyster Bay. “I am so proud that the Town of Oyster Bay will play host to such an amazing event. Empire State Ride Long Island is poised to make a tremendous difference in
the lives of those touched by cancer, and it will be directly due to the actions of our amazing residents who sign up for this fundraising ride,” said Supervisor Saladino. “With two wheels, our residents can change the world. I look forward to seeing everyone on event day, and I encourage any one of any age or riding ability to sign up for the event, as three course routes will be featured.” The Empire State Ride Long Island is a perfect, family-friendly summer event that features a ride through beautiful beaches,
woodlands, and the historic destinations in and around the Town of Oyster Bay, all while helping cancer patients gain access to the newest clinical trials. This one-day bike ride event, held in partnership between the Town and Empire State Ride Long Island, will raise funds for clinical research and trials that will benefit cancer patients at Catholic Health on Long Island and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the nation’s first cancer center in the United States dedicated exclusively to cancer research. “At Roswell Park, we believe
that no one should have to choose between convenience and quality when facing a decision about where they or a loved one should seek care for cancer,” says Roswell Park President and CEO Candace S. Johnson, PhD. “That’s why partnerships with health care facilities like Catholic Health and the funds raised through Empire State Ride Long Island are so critical to continue to provide the latest clinical trials and treatments to patients across New York State.” The event will feature 3 course lengths: a 10 mile route spanning the shoreline
from Bayville to Centre Island (ideal for family and children), a 25 mile route featuring the scenic rolling hills from Bayville through Locust Valley, Glen Cove and Old Brookville (for more experienced riders) and a 62 mile route through Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Roslyn Harbor, to Port Washington, and then all the way to Teddy Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill (for advanced cyclists). By participating in Empire State Ride Long Island, bicyclists will have an opportunity to make a real impact on cancer research and patient care

Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely With Water Safety Acronym Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Bobby Hazen, District Manager of Saf-T-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool
covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more distractions.” As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping
children learn life-saving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water. P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision. L = Life Jackets. Life jackets should be worn when on a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. A = Adult Always Watching. Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a
bath. Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised— not even for a minute. S = Shut All Gates. Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices. H = How to Rescue. Teach all caregivers infant, child/adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques. Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.

Assemblyman Durso To Hold Free Child ID Card Program New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with the Town of Oyster Bay, and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, will hold a FREE Child ID Card Program on Saturday, July 9th from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Marjorie Post Pool in Massapequa. The program is free and open to Nassau County residents. The ID cards will be produced on site and available in minutes. No appointment is necessary. When a child goes missing, every moment is precious. Law enforcement needs accurate information and
quickly. The Nassau County DA’s Operation Safe Child program provides parents with an identification card for their children containing pertinent physical information to give law enforcement officials a head start on a missing child. Information on each card includes child’s name, birthdate, age, gender, hair and eye color, height and weight, fingerprints, and a high-resolution digital photo.
